Bob DeMayo recorded his 898th and 899th career victories as head coach of the North Haven baseball team last week, when the Indians posted an 11-0 win over North Branford and a 9-1 triumph versus Law. DeMayo was slated to have two opportunities to put No. 900 in the books last weekend, although North Haven’s game against Xavier was rained out, as was its second contest with North Branford.

The Indians had their chance to give DeMayo his 900th win when they hosted Xavier at DeMayo Ballfield at North Haven Athletic Complex on May 21 (after press time). North Haven, which owns a record of 15-3 and has won its last eight games, could have also won its second straight SCC Quinnipiac Division title with a victory versus the Falcons.

North Haven was also scheduled to play an SCC Tournament quarterfinal game on May 22 (after press time) and then make up its second game against North Branford later that day. The SCC semis were scheduled for May 23 (after press time) and the final is slated to be played at Piurek Field at West Haven High School at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 24. After SCCs, North Haven will play in the Class L State Tournament.

In last week’s matchups, North Haven prevailed at North Branford by an 11-0 final on May 14 and then downed Law by a 9-1 score in a home game on May 17. In the non-conference win against North Branford, senior Nate Zalegowski got the start on the mound for the Indians and delivered by throwing five scoreless innings for his first varsity victory, allowing just four hits and two walks. North Haven scored a run in the first inning, one in the second inning, and then put the game away by plating nine runs during the top of the fourth. The game was halted after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Senior Steven Erbe went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, three RBI, and a stolen base for the Indians. Junior Hunter Garthwait went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI, senior Kevin Lucey was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, and fellow senior Nick Perillie had single with a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Additionally, junior Matt Solomon singled, walked, and scored a pair of runs, while senior Andrew Laudano and sophomore Matt DeRosa both had a single with a run and an RBI.

Later in the week, North Haven avenged a 2-0 loss to Law from earlier in the season by winning the rematch 9-1 in a game that was moved to the Indians’ former home site at Bailey Road Field. The Indians scored four runs in second inning and four more in the third on their way to the win. Senior Zach Pincince earned the win on the hill by allowing one run in 4.1 innings. Chris Ciarleglio threw 1.2 scoreless innings, and fellow senior Luca Lawrence pitched a scoreless seventh. Senior Andrew Laudano went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while DeRosa was 2-for-2 with two runs, a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI. Garthwait had a single with a run, a walk, and an RBI; Solomon walked twice, singled, and scored a run; Lucey singled, walked, and scored a pair of runs; Erbe had a single with an RBI, and sophomore Dave Christoforo single, drew a walk, and scored a run for North Haven.
