Huskies’ Boys’ Lacrosse Qualifies for Class S Tourney; Daley Sets Personal Record in the 1,600

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team picked up a pair of wins last week to qualify for the Class S State Tournament, while improving its record on the season to 8-6.

On May 10, the Huskies hosted North Branford and secured their spot in the postseason with a 15-9 win. Ryan Caldwell put four goals on the board, Tyler Newfield had three goals and two assists, and Matt Lee provided a goal and three assists. Zak Johnson netted a pair of goals, Ford Pender added a goal and an assist, plus Ryan Farrell and Isaac Erikson both added a goal for Morgan. Matt Luchuck manned the net and made five saves to get the victory.

Earlier in the week, Morgan notched a 10-5 win at Haddam-Killingworth, limiting the Cougars to just 15 shots on net. Caldwell scored four goals and had two assists, Lee had a pair of goals, Newfield added a goal and two assists, and Farrell and Pender each had one goal. Luchuk made five saves in net for the Huskies.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Huskies earned a recent win versus Haddam-Killingworth and now have a mark of 4-10 this spring.

On May 8, Morgan defeated H-K in a 9-6 contest on the road. After the first half, the score was knotted up at 4-4, but the Huskies pushed on to outpace the Cougars for the win. Madeline Stopkoski scored four goals and added an assist, and Georgia Nye notched a couple of goals in the win. Joelle Vuileumier provided a goal and two assists, while Madison Seeger and Robyn Vuilleumier had one goal each. Erin Lindsay, Delaney Mastriano, and Emily Davis all had one assist in the victory. Olivia McCray and Lindsay both had four draw controls, and Cassidy Shepard made seven saves on nine shots in goal.

Three days later, Morgan took a 16-10 loss at South Windsor. Stopkoski scored four goals and provided an assist, McCray scored two goals and had a helper, while Davis and Lindsay also had two goals apiece. Lindsay had five draw controls for the Huskies, who saw Shepard made 17 saves on 33 shots faced

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Huskies came in sixth place at the Runnin’ Rams Invitational at Old Saybrook High School on May 12.

Kate Daley took home first place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:17.88, and Alyssa LeMay grabbed first in the long jump with a distance of 16-0.25 for Morgan. In the 200, LeMay came in third place at 27.84.

The 4x800 relay of Daley, Alexandra Wolf, Maura Kelly, and Allison Gardner came in second with a time of 10:37.09. Mikayla Mancini snagged third place in the triple jump with a distance of 32-3. In javelin, Samantha Mena’s throw of 82-3 earned her fourth place. Taylor Wyatt took fifth place in the 100 at 13.90.

On May 1, Morgan took first place in several events in a meet at Portland that also included Cromwell and Lyman Memorial. Daley notched a new personal record in the 1,600 with a time of 5:22 to earn first place. LeMay took first in the 200 (27.36) and the long jump (15-8.5). Mancini finished first in the high jump (4-8) and the triple jump (33-8). In the discus, Mena’s throw of 82-7 was good for first place. The team of Daley, Kelly, Issy Ranaudo, and Gardner came in first in the 4x800 relay at 10:36, while the 4x100 quartet of Wyatt, Mancini, LeMay, and Charlotte Davenport took first with the time of 52.12.

Wyatt took second place in the 100 (13.16) and the 200 (28.18) for the Huskies. In the 800, Gardner came in second place at 2:36. Sydney Church scored second-place finishes in the 110 hurdles (19.03) and the 300 (54.52) hurdles. In the 4x400 relay, the grouping of Ranaudo, Mancini, Gardner, and Kelly claimed second place at 4:29.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Morgan competed at the Runnin’ Rams Invitational on May 12. The Huskies’ 4x800 relay of Chayse Lofgren, Brett Martin, Justin Mucha, and Thomas Southwood grabbed third place by running a time of 8:47.61 at the meet.

Previously, Morgan claimed first place in several events in a meet at Portland. In the 4x800 relay, the team of Lofgren, Martin, Mucha, and Southwood took first place with a time of 9:10. That same quartet also placed first in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:49. The 4x100 relay of Juan Avila, Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Sam Hauser, Bryce Thomas grabbed first place at 45.90.

Southwood took first in the 400 with a time of 54.92, and Lofgren finished right behind him at 56.24 for second. Anes Gadun earned first in the 300 hurdles (45.29) and second in the 110 hurdles (17.59). Patrick Wilson took home first place in the 200 with a time of 25.07. Juan Avila saw second-place finishes in the long jump (19-10.5) and the high jump (5-2). Sam Hauser came in second in javelin with a throw of 112-11.

Boys’ Tennis

Morgan scored two more wins last week, while also taking its first loss of the year, for a record of 14-1.

On May 8, Morgan netted a 7-0 victory against Coginchaug at home. Matt Newfield won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. Patrick Markovics claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2. Vincent Tino earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot, while Garrett Johnson grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4. JP Nye won a 6-3, 6-3 contest at the No. 5 position. The No. 1 doubles team of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo prevailed 6-0, 6-0, while the tandem of Sean Arribas Cockley and Drew Marzano earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2.

On May 11, the Huskies claimed a 5-2 win at Cromwell. Newfield earned a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Markovics posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Johnson recorded a marathon 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 6-4 win, and Nye won 6-3, 6-2. Arribas Cockley and Marzano (6-3, 6-1) had the only doubles win for the Huskies.

Earlier in the week, the Huskies took a 6-1 loss at Old Lyme on May 7. Nye earned Morgan’s lone win with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 singles match.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies lost four matches last week to drop to 3-14 this season.

On May 7, Morgan took a 7-0 loss at home against Old Lyme. The next day, the Huskies lost to Coginchaug 6-1 on the road. Yashveen Rai had the Huskies’ only win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 singles match.

On May 9, The Huskies took a 6-1 loss at North Branford. Morgan received its victory from the No. 2 doubles duo of Sydney Fratamico and Maria Beltran, who earned a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 win. Two days later, Morgan hosted Cromwell and took a 6-1 loss. Yahsveen Rai (6-4, 6-3) claimed the Huskies’ win in that match.

Golf

The Morgan saw a win and two losses last week and are 6-9 on the season.

On May 7, the Huskies were at Pine Orchard Club and scored a 191 for a win over Sheehan (199) and a loss to host Branford (175). Will Roberts was the medalist on the day with a score of 40. Ethan Tessman shot a 45, Ryan Powers had a 47, and Trevor Rohrbacher turned in a 59.

Two days later, Morgan lost a 171-174 match against Old Saybrook at Fenwick Golf Club. Powers earned medalist honors with a score of 38 for Old Saybrook. Jason Cohen shot a 43, Roberts tallied a 45, and Tessman scored a 48.

Softball

Morgan notched another win versus East Hampton last week to move to 5-11 on the season.

On May 7, the Huskies lost an 11-8 game against Coginchaug. The next day, the Huskies hosted East Hampton and picked up an 8-6 victory. On May 9, Morgan took a 23-11 home loss against Cromwell.

Baseball

The Huskies lost a pair of games last week and are now 6-11 on the season. Morgan lost a 9-2 contest against Coginchaug at home on May 9. Two days later, the Huskies hit the road to face Cromwell, where they lost 14-1.
