Engels Wins the Shot Put and the Discus in Old Saybrook; Both Tennis Teams Get Two Wins

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team competed at the Runnin’ Rams Invitational in Old Saybrook on May 12 and earned fifth place as a squad by scoring 51.5 points.

Danyelle Engels claimed first place in the shot put behind a throw of 33 feet-6 inches with Kelly Donlan taking second place with a 31-2 for Westbrook. Engels also earned first in discus with a throw of 96-10, while Donlan finished fifth at a distance of 80-5.

Tirzah Blomquist took second place in the triple jump with her leap of 32-11.5, and Erin Metcalfe grabbed fourth at 31-11. Alexandria Young tied for fifth place in the high jump with a height of 4-4. Hayden Davis took sixth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.97 seconds.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook came in 10th place with 30 points scored at last week’s Runnin’ Rams Invitational.

Vincent Dyer claimed first place in the discus with a toss of 130 feet-5 inches, and he also had a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 38-7. In the javelin, Elijah Panzera snagged third place with a distance of 137-9. Andrew Naccarrato came in fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.14 seconds to go with a fifth-place performance in the shot put behind a throw of 37-1.

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis squad picked up two more victories in last week’s action and is now sporting a record of 14-2 on the season.

On May 7, the Knights soundly defeated East Hampton/Hale-Ray by a 7-0 final in a home match. Sara Farnoli posted a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles match. Sarah Davey secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2. Victoria Koplas recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 match, while Merry Farrell notched a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position. Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi were 6-0, 6-0 victors in the No. 1 doubles contest, and the No. 2 duo of Lexie Vumback and Alyssa Esposito also scored a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Juliana Fabrizi and Skyler Jacobs claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.

Two days later, Westbrook netted a 5-2 victory in a home match against Haddam-Killingworth. Davey, who had lost her previous contest against her H-K opponent, prevailed at this time around in the No. 2 singles match to give the Knights a wider margin of victory.

On May 11, Westbrook dropped a 4-3 match at Old Lyme. Koplas’s 6-0, 6-1 win was the lone singles victory for Westbrook, although Farnoli put in a stellar effort in a four-hour marathon match that ended up in a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) defeat. In doubles, Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win, while Vumback and Esposito earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory

Boys’ Tennis

Westbrook grabbed a pair of wins in its three matches last week to put its record at 6-11 on the season.

On May 7, the Knights won a 5-2 match against East Hampton on the road. Two days later, Westbrook claimed a 7-0 victory at Haddam-Killingworth. On May 11, the Knights lost a 7-0 match at home to Old Lyme.

Softball

Westbrook won in one of its three recent contests by notching a victory versus Holy Family last week. The Knights own a record of 4-13 on the year.

The Knights went on the road to face Holy Family and won by a 16-0 score. Callie Newberg pitched a five-inning, complete-game shutout for Westbrook. Newberg allowed only two hits and struck out six batters through her five innings. Madison Maura had a big game by tallying three hits, three RBI, and two runs, while Jamie Merola had two hits, three RBI, and two runs. Olivia Hartzell added two hits, two RBI, and a run, and Lauren Wright also had a pair of hits to go with one run scored. Carolyn Bauman scored four runs with a hit and two walks, and Madison Marshall crossed the plate three times to go with a hit and two walks and an RBI. Olivia Pohorylo scored three runs and had two walks.

Earlier in the week, Westbrook lost a 16-4 game against Old Saybrook on May 7. Wright had two RBI, and Maura added one RBI for the Knights. Newberg and Alivia Ciarcia each provided a hit, while Ciarcia added a pair of walks.

Two days later, the Knights lost a 17-2 decision on the road against East Hampton. Maura picked up two hits and a run, and Bauman recorded a hit, an RBI, and a run. Ciarcia and Wright added one hit apiece.

Baseball

The Knights lost three games last week and now have a record of 8-9 on the season

On May 7, Westbrook hosted Portland and lost a 3-2 contest against the Highlanders. After tying the game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly from Jake Marciniec and an RBI single from Connor Cruz, the Knights gave up a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and took the one-run defeat. David McCain had three hits, Dan Perreault had two hits and a run, while Jack Hayes, Kyle Robison, and Cameron Marshall each had a hit for Westbrook

Two days later, Westbrook lost a 4-3 road matchup in East Hampton on a walk-off sacrifice fly by the Bellringers. McCain had two more hits, while Marshall and Perreault both had a base hit and scored a run. Marciniec drove in two runs and scored a run, plus Cruz and Robison both had a hit.

On May 11, the Knights faced Old Lyme and lost a 17-4 contest as the home squad at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.
