H-K Baseball Hits 15-Win Mark; Boys’ Track Now 10-0, Girls 9-1

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team won two of its three matchups last week and is now 15-2 on the season. H-K routed Hale-Ray and then posted a convincing win versus North Branford later in the week.

The Cougars defeated Hale-Ray 13-1 on May 8. Jon Civiello struck out six in four innings and also had two doubles with three RBI to lead the Cougars. Tobey Callender and Kyle Crandall each had two base knocks in the 17-hit onslaught.

H-K then took its second defeat of the year by dropping a 9-3 decision to Cromwell on May 9.

The Cougars bounced back by besting North Branford 7-2 on May 11. Chris Garrelts struck out nine in 5.2 innings, and Owen Marica fanned four in relief for H-K. Ben Alonzo hit a solo homer in the third, Marica had a triple and an RBI, and Ross Meglin doubled in a run in the seventh.

Softball

The Cougars are now 9-7 after taking four defeats last week.

H-K lost an 8-7 contest Cromwell on May 7 and then took a 10-1 loss to Northwestern the next day.

H-K was then shut out by North Branford, 4-0, on May 9. Amanda Minervino and Faith Mauri had the only hits for the Cougars. Adelle Biondi pitched well for H-K, giving up just two earned runs in seven innings.

The Cougars played North Branford again on May 11 and took a 6-1 defeat. Brooke LaTouche started on the mound and went five innings, after which Biondi pitched a scoreless sixth for H-K.

Boys’ and Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 8, Haddam-Killingworth’s boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams hosted a tri-meet against Cromwell and Old Lyme. Both the boys’ and girls’ squads came away with two victories on the day. The boys defeated Cromwell (129-16) and Old Lyme (116-32) to remain undefeated at 10-0, while the girls improved to 9-1 by earning wins versus Cromwell (88.5-61) and Old Lyme (128.5-21.5).

Leading the way for H-K boys were the following event winners: Luke Sodergren for the 110 hurdles (17.2) and 300 hurdles (45.9), Seth Regan with the 100 (11.7), Matt Jennings in the 1,600 (4:48), Kurt Sodergren for the 800 (2:11), Alex Inkel in the 3,200 (11:16), Dalton Modehn for the long jump (17-9), Trey Callender for the shot put (39-8), Jake Frith for the pole vault (11-0), Chase Mack for the discus (118-3), and Wally Sample with the javelin (136-2). The 4x100 and 4x800 relays were also victorious.

For the girls’ team, the Cougars boasted the following event winners: Veronica Chrzanowski for the 200 (27.0), long jump (16-3), and triple jump (33-4), Meara Bodak in the 3,200 (13:15), Autumn Coady in the 100 hurdles (17.3), Sadie Strom for the 300 hurdles (50.2), Hailey Cassidy in the 1,600 (5:56), plus Destiny Pendleton in the shot put (26-6) and discus (70-9). The 4x400 relay also took first place.

Golf

The Cougars stand at 4-4 after winning two of their three matchups last week.

H-K took care of East Hampton by a 180-218 final on May 8. Oliver Artus earned medalist honors with a 42 for the Cougars, who also saw Andrew Kuehn (44), Greg Lynskey (47), Kaisone Bounphakdy (47), and Mikey Barile (52) compete at the meet.

The Cougars next defeated Valley Regional 186-202 on May 9. Artus and Lynskey each put in a 45 for their round and were followed by Kuehn (47) and Ethan Campbell (49).

H-K lost a 170-187 contest to Old Lyme on May 10. Artus led the way for H-K with a 42, while Lynskey (46), Kuehn (49), and Barile (50) also competed hit the course for the Cougars.

Boys’ Lacrosse

H-K lost to Morgan and defeated Cromwell last week for a record of 4-8 on the year.

The Cougars lost a 10-5 decision against Morgan on May 8. H-K then saw its offense explode in a 24-13 victory over Cromwell on May 10.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Cougars lost three games last week and are now 0-14 on the campaign.

H-K took a 9-6 defeat to Morgan on May 8. The Cougars next lost a 17-12 contest against East Catholic on May 10. The next day, H-K lost to Ledyard by an 11-7 score.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K is now 7-9 after dropping three contests last week.

The Cougars took a 5-2 defeat to Coginchaug on May 7, lost to Westbrook by a 5-2 score on May 9, and then lost to Old Saybrook by the same margin on May 11.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars took three recent defeats and are now 2-12 on the season.

Haddam-Killingworth took a 7-0 loss to Coginchaug on May 7. H-K then lost by that same score against Westbrook two days later, followed by a 7-0 loss versus Old Saybrook on May 11.
