Guilford Baseball Qualifies for States; Tennis and Lacrosse Squads Pick Up More Wins

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team won two games of its three games last week to secure a bid in the Class L State Tournament. Following their victories versus Shelton and Cross, the Indians have an overall record of 9-7 to go with a mark of 4-3 in the SCC Oronoque Division.

Guilford took an 8-0 loss to Fairfield Prep on May 7. The Indians then clinched their postseason berth with a 2-0 win over Shelton on May 9. Two days later, Guilford edged Cross by a 3-2 score in eight innings.

Softball

Guilford is now 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the SCC Hammonasset Division after recording victories against division rivals Foran and Career last week.

The Indians took a 4-0 loss to Cheshire on May 7. However, Guilford defeated Foran 6-1 on May 9 and then closed the week with a 15-0 shutout of Career on May 11.

Boys’ Tennis

Guilford has a busy week with five matches and won four of them to improve to 16-2.

Guilford took a 7-0 loss to Hand on May 6. The Indians came back the next day with a 7-0 sweep of Hamden and then defeated Notre Dame-West Haven 5-2 on May 8. The Indians kept the trend going with a 5-2 victory versus Shelton on May 9 and a 7-0 triumph over West Haven on May 11.

Girls’ Tennis

The Indians stand at 13-3 after securing two wins in their three matches last week.

Guilford defeated North Haven 6-1 on May 7. The Indians’ wins in singles came from Charlotte Babbin (6-3, 0-6, 6-4), Molly Babbin (6-0, 6-0), and Acadia Hall (6-1, 6-1). The doubles teams of Sam Stofflet and Emily Dietzko (6-2, 6-0), Elaina Griffiths and Allie Stankewich (6-3, 6-4), and Emma Rand and Annabelle Wang (6-0, 6-3) were also victorious.

The Indians then lost a 4-3 match to Stonington on May 9. Charlotte Babbin (6-4, 7-5), Molly Babbin (6-3, 4-6, 6-4), and the team of Stofflet and Dietzko (6-2, 6-1) picked up victories for Guilford.

After that, Guilford earned a 4-3 win over Amity on May 10. Molly Babbin (3-6, 6-1, 6-0) and Hall (6-0, 6-2) won their matches, along with teams of Stofflet and Dietzko (5-7, 6-3, 6-4), and Griffiths and Stankewich (6-3, 6-1).

Girls’ Lacrosse

Guilford improved to 10-4 after grabbing victories over Avon and Simsbury this past week.

The Indians took a 19-7 loss to Hand on May 8. However, Guilford bounced right back by defeating Avon 18-6 on May 10 and then netting a 12-11 double-overtime win over Simsbury on May 11.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians are now 9-5 after picking up two more wins last week.

Guilford defeated Amity by an 18-7 final on May 7. The Indians then took down Cheshire by notching a 17-13 victory versus the Rams on May 9.

Crew

Guilford swept its last race of the regular season against E.O. Smith on Senior Day on May 9.

On the girls’ side, every Guilford boat won its respective race by more than 10 seconds. The varsity 1 8+ secured its first victory of the season with a time of 5:11.0. The varsity 2 8+ won against two E.O. Smith boats with a time of 5:29.0. The novice 8+ boat posted a time of 5:40.5 and finished its regular season undefeated.

For the boys, the varsity 1 4+ boat finished with a time of 5:14.0 and defeated its E.O. Smith opponent, as did both boys’ novice boats. The novice A 8+ recorded a time of 4:21.1 and won by more than a 30-second margin over the novice B 8+ (4:57.4) and the E.O. Smith boat. The Guilford varsity 1 8+ group bested the varsity 2 8+ in an unofficial race, as E.O. Smith did not enter a boys’ varsity 8+. boat

The Guilford seniors who celebrated their final home race were Trinity Flynn, Julia Lemoine, Ainsley Mackenzie, Aislynn Regan, Andrew Chapman, Benjamin Dinoia, Leo Freund, Andre Kish, Abe LeGrant, John Lemoine, Lucas Wilson, and Nicholas Zira.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Indians closed out the regular season by recording wins again Mercy and Foran on May 8 to finish 4-7 in dual-meets this spring. Guilford defeated Mercy 89-57 and posted a 106-44 victory versus Foran.

Sofia Migani won the 200 in 27.9, the long jump at 15-5, and the triple jump with a leap of 33-7 for the Indians. Meredith Bloss took first place in both the 800 (2:28) and the 3,200 (12:23), Christina Nault won the 300 hurdles in 50.1 and the high jump (4-10), Jacqueline Guerra won the 1,600 in 5:31, Chloe Shaw was first in the 400 in 60.7, and Maya Rumanoff won the 100 at 13.8. Also for Guilford, the 4x800 relay prevailed in 11:35, while the 4x400 was victorious with a time of 4:23.

Then on May 11-12, the Indians competed at the Irv Black Invitational in New Britain. Guerra (5:15) and Bloss (5:16) went 1-2 in the 1,600. Then in the 3,200, Bloss took first (11:13) and Guerra finished in second (11:14). Nault finished third for the 300 hurdles in 74.68, while Migani took fifth in the long jump (15-8) and the triple jump (32-8). The 4x800 relay of Julia Esposito, Guerra, Kelsi Putnam, Shaw placed first with a season-best time of 9:43. The 4x400 of Shaw, Jess Bohan, Meg Reynolds, Putnam claimed first in 4:19.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

After competing at the Middletown Invitational, the Indians finished their dual-meet season by dropping a pair of contests for a record of 3-9 on the year.

The Middletown Invitational took place on May 4 and 5. In the varsity events, Brennan Kaisen qualified for states in the 1,600 by running a time of 4:43.67. In the freshman/sophomore events, Ben Crair won the 1,600 (4:48) and McKendry Eschinger finished fifth in the 800 (2:08.98).

Guilford then faced Foran and Xavier in a tri-meet on May 8, dropping contests to both squads, including a 92.5-37.5 defeat versus Foran. Will Smith won the 400 (51.4), Eschinger took first in the 800 (2:08.80), Elijah Dillon won the 3,200 (10:34.8), and the 4x400 relay team of Eschinger, Joe Walters, Cameron Hubbard, and Smith also finished first (3:35.80). James Petritz qualified for states in the shot put (41-0), while Jacob Walker established a career best in the javelin (106-0).
