Morgan Boys’ Tennis Runs its Record to 12-0; Golf Grabs Three Victories

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis team won all four of its matches last week to stay undefeated on the season. The Huskies have a record of 12-0 and also qualified for the Class S State Championship last week.

On April 30, the Huskies defeated Old Saybrook posted a 5-2 home win over Old Saybrook qualify for states. Matt Newfield earned a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win in the No. 1 singles match for Morgan. Garret Johnson won his first set 6-1 and took the second set by default at the No. 4 position. JP Nye earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 5 match. The No. 1 doubles duo of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Sean Arribas Cockley and Drew Marzano posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 doubles match.

The next day, Morgan prevailed 6-1 at Westbrook. Patrick Markovics netted a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and Vincent Tino prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. Johnson (6-2, 6-1) and Nye (6-1, 6-0) were triumphant at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Murray and Nuzzo won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Arribas Cockley and Marzano recorded a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 2.

The day after that, Morgan grabbed a 5-2 road win against East Hampton. Tino notched a 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (2-7), 6-2 win at No. 3 singles; Johnson snagged a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot; and Murray won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 match. Arribas Cockley and Marzano slid up to the No. 1 doubles match and earned a 6-0, 6-0 win. The No. 2 doubles duo of Calvin Jackson and Nye posted a 6-2, 6-3 win.

On May 4, the Huskies defeated Haddam-Killingworth 7-0. Newfield and Markovics prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively. Jackson recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, as did Andrew Daly at No. 4. Nye won via default at No. 5 singles. In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Arribas Cockley and Marzano won by default as did the No. 2 team of Deven Talarczyk and Liam Whelan.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies won one of their four matches last week and have a record of 3-10 on the year.

On April 30, Morgan lost 7-0 at Old Saybrook. The next day, the Huskies lost a 6-1 decision to Westbrook at home. The No. 3 doubles duo of Ingrid Rodriguez and Sydney Fratamico earned a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 win for the Huskies.

The following afternoon, Morgan grabbed a 6-1 home victory against East Hampton/Hale-Ray. Yashveen Rai earned a 6-4, 7-5 win in the No. 1 singles match. In the No. 2 position, Becca Walton notched a 6-1, 6-2 win. Bea Atengco claimed a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the No. 3 match. At No. 1 doubles, Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings swept their match 6-0, 6-0. Grace Hull and Becca Cockley earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 match. Rodriguez and Fratamico snagged a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.

On May 4, Morgan dropped a 4-3 contest at Haddam-Killingworth. The teams of Andrews and Cummings (6-1, 6-1), Hull and Cockley (6-3, 6-3), and Rodriguez and Fratamico (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) were victorious for Morgan.

Golf

Morgan scored three victories in last week’s matches to improve to 5-6 on the season.

On April 30, the Huskies hosted Lyme-Old Lyme, Waterford, and Fitch at the Clinton Country Club. Morgan totaled a score of 190 to earn wins against Waterford (205) and Fitch (212), while dropping a decision against Lyme-Old Lyme (176). Will Roberts shot a 43 with Jason Cohen close behind at 44. Ryan Powers turned in a score of 49, Trevor Rohrbacher shot a 54, and John Inglis tallied a score of 55.

The next day, the Huskies headed to Great Neck Country club to face Waterford and Montville. Morgan secured a 193-211 win against the Indians and took a 189-193 defeat to Waterford. Cohen shot a 43 on the day, and Ethan Tessman finished with a 44. Roberts scored a 52, Powers had 54, and Inglis turned in a 67.

On May 2, the Huskies came back home to Clinton Country Club, where they dropped a 187-199 decision against Portland. Roberts scored a 43, Cohen shot a 45, Tessman turned in a 54, Rorhbacher had a 57, and Inglis totaled a 59 in the match.

Baseball

Morgan split its four games last week by defeating Old Lyme and Westbrook, while losing to North Branford and valley Regional. The Huskies now stand at 6-9 on the season.

On April 30, the Huskies picked up a 2-0 home win against Old Lyme. Connor Dery pitched shutout ball to lead Morgan to the victory, allowing no runs on just four hits and one walk. Nick Caprio and Kyle Suraci both had two hits to aid the Huskies’ offense.

The next day, Morgan notched a 10-8 victory at Westbrook in nine innings. The game was tied 8-8 entering the top of the ninth, when Nick Caprio went yard for the second time in the game to score Suraci ahead of him for a two-run advantage. Caprio had a monster day at the plate by going 4-for-5 with a single, a double, two homers, and seven RBI. Trevor Follo also hit a homer, while Mike Manacho had a multi-hit game. Suraci pitched five innings for Morgan, before Mike Zingarella took over in the sixth. Caprio closed out the game on the mound.

On May 2, Morgan dropped an 11-8 home game to North Branford. Three days later, the Huskies lost a 3-2 contest at Valley Regional.

Softball

The Huskies recorded a win against Valley Regional last week to go with a couple of defeats. Morgan now has a record of 4-9 this season.

On April 30, Morgan lost a 14-6 home contest against North Branford. Two days later, the Huskies picked up a 9-5 win at Valley Regional. On May 4, the Huskies took an 11-2 home loss against Haddam-Killingworth.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Morgan picked up a home win against Old Saybrook, before dropping road games against Valley Regional and Branford last week. The Huskies’ record is now 6-6.

On May 1, the Huskies scored a 4-1 home victory over the Rams. Two days later, Morgan lost to Valley Regional, 12-9. Then on May 5, the Huskies dropped a 16-8 contest against North Branford.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Huskies lost three recent games to move to 3-9 this year.

On May 1, the Huskies took a 20-9 defeat at Old Saybrook. Two days later, Morgan dropped an 18-9 home contest against Valley Regional. Morgan received goals from Erin Lindsay (2), Olivia McCray, Madison Seeger, Emily Davis, Georgia Nye, and Lindsay Narracci. Recording assists were Madeline Stopkoski, McCray, Seeger, and Nye. Lindsay had four draw controls, and Cassidy Shepard made eight saves in net.

On May 5, Morgan lost 17-3 at Fairfield-Ludlowe. McCray scored two goals for the Huskies, while Stopkoski notched one goal. Shepard made nine stops on the day, and McCray and Stopkoski had three draw controls apiece.
