Hanssen Gets 100th Win as Westbrook Baseball Makes States; Girls’ Tennis Also Qualifies

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team earned a split in four games last week to move to 8-6 and secure a place in the Class S State Tournament. Along the way, Derek Hanssen recorded his 100th win as the Knights’ head coach.

On April 30, the Knights took a 4-2 defeat at Haddam-Killingworth. Connor Cruz and Jason Cordon provided two hits apiece, while Jack Hayes, Cameron Marshall, and Quinn Ernst all had a hit for Westbrook.

The next day, Westbrook hosted Morgan and lost an extra-inning game by the score of 10-8. Westbrook held a three-run lead going into the seventh inning, when Morgan scored three runs to tie the game, after which the Huskies plated a pair in the ninth on their way to the win. Cameron Marshall went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, Hayes had two hits and two RBI; Cordon had three hits, two runs, and an RBI; and Jake Marciniec also had three hits.

The following afternoon, the Knights grabbed a 13-3 victory over Creed for Coach Hanssen’s 100th win with Westbrook. David McCain pitched five solid innings for the Knights, scattering three hits to get the win. Kyle Robison had three hits, including two double, and two RBI at the dish.

Two days later, the Knights won at home against Hale-Ray, 13-0, to clinch a spot in states. Marshall threw five shutout innings with six strikeouts, and he also had two hits and three RBI. Hayes supplied two hits, including a grand slam, with five RBI. Cruz was 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs, and two RBI.

Softball

The Knights picked up a win in four games last week and are now 3-11 this year.

On April 30, Westbrook took a 20-1 home loss against Hale-Ray. The next day, the Knights lost on the road against Coginchaug, 18-2.

Then on May 2, Westbrook notched a 10-8 win over Portland at home. Madison Marshall had two hits and two RBI, while Lauren Wright added two RBI and a base hit. Alivia Ciarcia scored three runs with a hit and an RBI. Callie Newberg got the win on the mound by pitching 4.2 innings, and Jamie Merola finished the game in relief.

Two days later, Westbrook lost a 19-3 contest at Old Lyme.

Girls’ Tennis

The Knights won three of their four matches last week to improve to 12-1 and qualify for the Class S State Tournament.

On April 30, Westbrook secured a postseason berth with a 5-2 win over Coginchaug at home. Sara Farnoli earned a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 win in the No. 1 singles match, while Sarah Davey claimed a 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at No. 2. Victoria Koplas snagged a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 3 position. The No. 1 doubles team of Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi picked up a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win. Olivia Archer and Julianna Fabrizi earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory at No. 3.

The next day, the Knights defeated Morgan 6-1 on the road. Farnoli netted a 6-1, 6-1 win, while Davey earned the 6-3, 6-4 win. Victoria Koplas prevailed 6-0, 6-0, and Merry Farrell grabbed a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory in the No. 4 singles match. As for doubles, Ulanowicz and Fabrizi notched a 6-3, 7-5 win, and the No. 2 duo of Lexie Vumback and Alyssa Esposito won 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

Two days later, Westbrook earned a 7-0 win over Portland at home. Farnoli (5-7, 6-4, 6-0), Davey (6-1, 6-0), and Koplas (6-1, 6-3) were all victorious on the singles side, along with Skyler Jacobs (6-4, 6-3) in the No. 4 match. The doubles teams of Ulanowicz and Fabrizi (6-0, 6-4), Vumback and Esposito (6-0, 6-0), and Archer and Fabrizi (6-0, 6-0) all secured wins.

The next day, Westbrook took its first loss of the year by dropping a 5-2 contest to Old Saybrook. Farnoli (6-4, 6-2) and Koplas (6-0, 6-3) won their matches for Westbrook.

Boys’ Tennis

Westbrook won one of its three matches last week to move to 4-10 on the year.

On April 30, the Knights picked up a 4-3 win at Coginchaug. The next day, Westbrook lost at home against Morgan, 6-1. The following day, the Knights hosted Stonington a took a 4-3 defeat. On May 4, Westbrook lost to Old Saybrook at home, 6-1. The next day, the Knights took at 6-1 defeat at home against Granby Memorial.
