The East Haven baseball team qualified for the Southern Connecticut Conference and Class L State tournaments by winning three of its four games last week. Along the way, freshman Nick Furino tossed a five-inning perfect game when the Easties posted a 10-0 victory against Harding on May 1. The Yellowjackets are now 8-7 on the season.

East Haven’s week started with a 7-1 defeat against Notre Dame-West Haven on April 30. Jack Kabel took the loss on the mound despite keeping the Green Knights in check for most of the contest. Notre Dame scored five runs in the sixth inning to distance itself from the Yellowjackets, who saw Frank Camera get a hit with an RBI.

The loss marked the fifth straight for East Haven, but the following day, Furino pitched a perfect game by retiring all 15 batters he faced when the Yellowjackets posted a 10-0 non-conference win over Harding that was halted after five innings due to the mercy rule. Furino struck out 11 batters on his way to perfection. At the plate, Anthony Buffone had a double, a home run, and four RBI, while Ryan Spano finished with three RBI.

East Haven followed up that win by posting a 9-5 victory over Law on May 2. Ryan Spano started on the mound, and Nate Furino turned in 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory. Furino also had two doubles and a home run, plus Gabe Longley had two hits.

The day after that, the Yellowjackets defeated Cross by a 5-3 score to clinch their playoff berth. Nate Furino notched another win in relief and also doubled home the go-ahead run for East Haven, which scored twice in the top of the seventh. Kabel started and allowed three runs on only one hit. Frank Camera had three hits and three runs scored to aid the offense.
