King Gets 500th Strikeout, 100th Hit in Same Week; Guilford Girls’ Tennis, Lacrosse Make States

Softball

The Guilford softball squad gained a split of its four games last week and now stands with a record of 10-4 on the season. Along the way, senior Amanda King achieved a pair of career milestones.

Guilford took a 7-1 loss to East Lyme on April 30, a day that saw King get her 100th career hit with the Indians. Guilford then lost a 2-0 decision to SCC Hammonasset Division foe Cheshire the next day to drop to 3-1 in the division. King, Emily Torre, and Mary Evans each had a hit.

Guilford rebounded with a 16-4 victory versus Branford on May 2. King picked up the win in the circle and went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double. Ava Gladwin was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a stolen base, Evans went 2-for-3 and drove in four, Jillian Batick had a double and three RBI, plus Jess Smith and Charlotte Young each had a hit and two RBI.

The Indians defeated Sacred Heart Academy 6-1 on May 3. King earned the win by scattering three hits and striking out 10, including the 500th strikeout of her high-school career. Jordyn Goldstein led the Guilford offense by going 3-for-4 with a homer, double, and two RBI. Gladwin and Sara Barreira each had two hits.

Baseball

The Indians split a pair of SCC contests last week and are now one victory away from postseason berth with a record of 7-6.

Guilford took a 5-3 loss against Branford on May 1. The Indians then claimed a 13-8 victory versus West Haven on May 2.

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford won two of three last week to improve to 11-2 and secure a berth in the Class L State Tournament.

The Indians were shut out 7-0 by Hand on April 30. Guilford then edged Lauralton Hall 4-3 to clinch its playoff bid on May 2. The Indians took care of Cheshire with a 5-2 win on May 3.

Against Lauralton Hall, Guilford swept the singles sides behind wins from Faren Roth (6-1, 6-1), Charlotte Babbin (6-3, 6-2), Molly Babbin (6-0, 6-3), and Acadia Hall (6-1, 3-6, 6-2).

Facing Cheshire, victories came from Roth (6-0, 6-1), Charlotte Babbin (6-2, 6-1), Molly Babbin (6-1, 6-1), Acadia Hall (6-1, 6-2), and the tandem of Sam Stofflet and Elaina Griffiths (7-5, 4-6, 6-2).

Boys’ Tennis

Guilford took its first defeat last week, but is still standing strong with a record of 12-1 this spring.

Guilford dropped a 5-2 decision against Amity on April 30. The Indians came back the next day to defeat Sheehan 7-0 and then edged out Weston 4-3 on May 5.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians have assured themselves a spot in the Class M State Tournament after recording three wins last week to improve to 8-3.

Guilford started the week with an 18-7 victory over Haddam-Killingworth on May 1. The Indians then clinched their states berth with a 16-12 win over East Lyme on May 3. Two days later, Guilford edged out Law by the final of 16-15.

Golf

The Indians improved to 10-1 after putting together a perfect week that saw them hand Shelton its second loss of the season.

Guilford bested Amity 177-188 on April 30. The Indians then shot a collective 162 on May 2 to defeat Hillhouse (186), Cross (250), and Career (251). Guilford knocked off Shelton on May 3 by notching a 168-170 decision.

Versus Amity, James Marks led Guilford by shooting a 41 for medalist honors. Joining him on the course were Austin Hitchcock (45), Josh Krause (45), Anthony Avallone (46), John Kosh (47), and Noah Kosh (54).

In the quad-match sweep, Marks and Avallone were co-medalists as both golfers turned in a score of 39. Austin Fix and Hitchcock both shot a 42, while Krause finished with a 44.

Facing Shelton, Marks paced the Indians with a 40, John Kosh had a 41, Avallone shot a 42, Noah Kosh and Hitchcock both scored a 43, and Fix finished with a score of 57.

Crew

Guilford faced Lyme-Old Lyme, E.O. Smith, Old Saybrook, and Valley Regional at Rogers Lake in Old Lyme on May 2.

The boys’ side won two of three races with victories in the varsity 2 8+ race (5:46.20) and the novice 8+ (6:41.30). The varsity 2 8+ placed second (5:36.8) to Lyme-Old Lyme and bested E.O. Smith.

The girls’ races saw similar results with the varsity 2 8+ (6:53.60) and the novice 8+ (6:20.80) squads securing wins. The varsity 1 8+ boat placed third of four teams (6:19.70), and the varsity 4+ lost to Lyme-Old Lyme (7:51).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Indians lost a pair of contests in a tri-meet last week, before putting forth some solid showings at the Middletown Invitational.

On May 1, Guilford dropped a 108-42 decision to Shelton and took a 107-43 defeat to Sheehan to move to 2-7. Jacqueline Guerra won the 1,600 (5:17) and 3,200 (11:58) for the Indians. Chloe Shaw was runner-up in the 800 (2:29), while Meredith Bloss placed second for the 1,600 (5:22) and 3,200 (11:59). The Indians’ 4x400 (4:19) and 4x800 (10:28) relay squads also finished second.

At the Middletown Invitational, which took place on May 4-5, Guerra finished third for the 1,600 with a personal-best time of 5:07, and Bloss clocked in with a season-best mark of 11:00 in the 3,200 to finish second. The 4x800 relay of Julia Esposito, Chloe Shaw, Kelsi Putnam, and Elissa Strand won its race in 9:57.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians took losses to Amity and Cheshire in a recent tri-meet and are now 3-7 this year.

Guilford took on Amity and Cheshire on May 1. The Indians dropped a 100.5-49.5 decision to Amity and took a 103.5-46.5 defeat to Cheshire.
