Huge Week on the North Haven Sports Scene

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team had home game versus Sheehan and faced Notre Dame-West Haven on the road in last week’s matchups. The Indians defeated both Sheehan and the Green Knights to improve to 11-3 on the season.

On May 2, North Haven hosted Sheehan under the lights at DeMayo Ballfield and defeated the Titans 7-2. The game was tied 2-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Indians pushed five runs across the plate to take a 7-2 lead. Senior Chris Ciarleglio earned the win on the mound by pitching six strong innings in which he allowed two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out eight. Fellow senior Luca Lawrence tossed a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win.

Junior leadoff hitter Matt Solomon had a nice day at the dish by going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base for North Haven. Senior Peyton Farina was 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, two RBI, and a stolen base for North Haven. Kevin Lucey doubled with a run scored and an RBI; fellow senior Steven Erbe and Hunter Garthwait both singled and scored a run; and senior Nick Perillie and sophomore Dave Christoforo each had a base hit with an RBI.

Two days later, the Indians squared off with Notre Dame at Quigley Stadium and defeated the Green Knights 6-5. North Haven scored two in the first and two in the second, before Notre Dame plated five runs in the bottom of the second to go up 5-4. However, the Indians scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take a one-run lead. Garthwait doubled and scored on Farina’s double to tie the game, after which Solomon came home with the go-ahead run on Notre Dame error. Senior Zach Pincince started on the hill for North Haven, and Lawrence picked up the win by allowing just one run on three hits and two walks in 5.2 innings of relief.

Farina went 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and two RBI; Garthwait was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI; and Solomon singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run. Additionally, Erbe had a single with an RBI and a steal, Perillie singled and scored a run, sophomore Matt DeRosa hit a double, and Lucey singled twice for the Indians.

Softball

The Indians were victorious in all four of their four games last week to improve to 11-3 and clinch a berth in the Class L State Tournament. North Haven qualified for states by earning a 6-4 win over Law and then defeated Foran, Cross, and Branford later in the week.

In its first game of the week, North Haven hosted Foran and routed the Lions by a 10-4 score on April 30. The following afternoon, the Indians recorded a 9-0 victory at divisional opponent Cross to improve to 3-1 in the Oronoque.

The day after that, North Haven earned a 4-1 home win over Sacred Heart Academy when sophomore Eryn Sheeley belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning for the walk-off victory. The game remained scoreless until Sacred Heart Academy plated the first run in the top of the 10th inning. The Indians came back to tie it in the bottom of the 10th and then won it on Sheeley’s homer in the 11th. Junior Lauren Card pitched all 11 innings, allowing three hits and two walks to go with nine strikeouts to get the win. Peyton Davis went 4-for-5, while fellow junior Carly Brown hit a triple for the Indians.

To wrap up the week, the Indians headed to Branford and defeated the Hornets 15-2.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

North Haven had a home meet versus SCC Oronoque Division rival East Haven on May 1 and prevailed 111-39. The Indians improved to 7-2 overall and won their second straight Oronoque Division title with a record of 4-0 by defeating the Yellowjackets.

Junior Erica Marriott put together another exceptional performance by taking first place in four events. Marriott won the long jump with a distance of 16 feet-5.5 inches, took first in the triple jump by reaching 33-1.5, won the 100-meter dash in 12.3 seconds, and finished first in the 200 with a 25.6. Fellow junior Giselle Zumerchik claimed first place in both the 100 hurdles (15.3) and the 300 hurdles (50.4). Sophomore Reagan Forbes finished first in the 1,600 (6:08.6) to go with a victory in the 3,200 (13:44.8).

Ashley Brown won the 400 (62.1), fellow senior Macey DiCarlo took first in the 800 (2:49.3), Kyla DelVecchio placed first for the javelin (104-3), and fellow senior Jacqui Weaver won the pole vault with a height of 7 feet. Senior Kemi Balogun finished first in the discus with a throw of 65-6, while sophomore Courtney McFarland won the shot put at 29-5.5. North Haven’s 4x800 relay of Cecile Tobin, fellow sophomore Raven Tebbetts, junior Jackie Howlett, and DiCarlo took first place in 12:13.4.

Later in the week, the Indians saw several athletes compete at the Middletown Invitational. Marriott won the long jump with a distance of 18 feet, took third in the 200 (25.49), and ran with sophomore Sammy Curcio, Brown, and junior Camille Sahirul on the fourth-place 4x100 relay (50.71). Zumerchik took fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.68), while DelVecchio placed fourth in the javelin (101-9).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians hosted SCC Oronoque Division opponent East Haven at Vanacore Field on May 2 and came away with a 90-60 victory. With the win, North Haven improved to 7-4 overall and finished with a record of 3-1 in the Oronoque Division this year.

Junior Robert Farley took first place in three events to help the Indians defeat East Haven. Farley finished first the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.2 seconds, won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 43.4 seconds, and also placed first in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet-6 inches. Sophomore Kyle Maruca placed first in both the shot put (44-11) and the discus (130-0). Senior Corey Reilly also won two events by taking first place in the 800 (2:22.4) and the 3,200 (11:22.8).

Junior Jack Opramolla won the 400 (55.9), sophomore Jeff Williston took first in the javelin (116-7), and freshman Patrick Rourke finished first in the 1,600 (5:07.9) for North Haven. The Indians’ 4x800 relay of Opramolla, Jobin Vilayaveettil, fellow junior Jackson Frank, and freshman Nick Howlett finished first with a time of 9:38.

On May 5, Maruca posted a fifth-place finish in the discus at the Middletown Invitational with a throw of 141-4.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians won two of their three games last week to improve to 7-5 on the campaign and earn a berth in the Class M State Tournament. North Haven notched wins against Sheehan and Shelton, before taking a loss against North Branford later in the week.

The Indians started off their week with a home game versus Sheehan and defeated the Titans 15-5 on May 1. North Haven quickly fell behind 2-0, but then scored the next 11 goals on its way to the rout. Junior Annie Uyeki scored six goals for North Haven. Senior Kylie Brandt and sophomore Madison Fredericks scored four goals apiece with Brandt also contributing three assists. Junior Meg Christoforo had a goal with an assist for the Indians, who saw the defensive unit of senior Morgan Sullivan, juniors Grace Gillooly and Lindsey Rowland, sophomore Erika Holle shut down the Titans.

Two days later, North Haven hosted Shelton and claimed a 12-9 victory to qualify for states. The Indians grabbed a 9-4 lead at halftime and held off the Gaels the rest of the way. Brandt scored four goals, Uyeki had three goals with two assists, senior Courtney Babbidge and sophomore Callie Kessler each scored two goals, junior Molly Scarpa added a goal, and Christoforo and Holle both had an assist. Junior Casey Kross made 12 saves to get the win in goal.

Then on May 5, the Indians dropped a 23-4 decision at North Branford in a non-conference matchup.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven played one game last week when it hosted Notre Dame-West Haven on May 2. The Indians dropped a 10-8 decision to move to 7-4 for the season.

Junior Jack Broggi and freshman Kasey Mongillo both scored two goals for the Indians against Notre Dame. North Haven also received one goal apiece from seniors Zack Orth, Mark Montano, and Kyle Pearson, plus one assist from sophomore Brian Mills.

Golf

North Haven was on the links for one match last week when the Indians faced Law at Orange Hills Country Club on May 3. North Haven earned a 179-186 win to move to 2-4 on the season.

Junior Alex Kirtland collected medalist honors by finishing with a personal-best varsity score of 41. Junior captain Ian Crowther continued his season-long streak of scoring in the 40’s with a score of 44. Junior captain Andrew Johnson and sophomore Julia Raposo both finished with a 47 for North Haven. Mike Collins totaled a score of 58.

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven had a busy week with four matches in five days and came away with three wins to improve to 4-7. The Indians posted wins versus Sheehan, Foran, and East Haven to go with a defeat versus Xavier.

North Haven began the week by recording a 5-2 home victory against Sheehan on April 30. Junior Nick Cristante won by an 8-1 final in the No. 1 singles match. Senior Riley Powell won 8-1 at No. 3 singles, and junior Max Petruzziello prevailed 8-0 in the No. 4 singles match. North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Jake Barra and freshman Tanner Powell took an 8-5 victory, while the No. 3 duo of senior Ethan Pavano and sophomore Laekhram Singh won 8-3.

Two days later, the Indians had a match at Foran and pulled off a 4-3 victory. Cristante won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for North Haven, which saw all three of its doubles teams win their matches to secure the victory. The Indians’ No. 1 doubles team of junior Quinn Dallai and Tanner Powell won a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 decision; the No. 2 duo of senior Ryan Millea and sophomore Andrew Carmody prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 10-1; and the No. 3 team of Barra and Singh earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The next day, North Haven claimed a 5-2 victory at East Haven. Cristante won a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles, while senior Matt Carroll recorded a 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match. Riley Powell won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, and Petruzziello netted a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 4 match. North Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of Barra and Singh grinded out a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 win.

In its last match of the stretch, North Haven took a 7-0 home loss to Xavier on May 4.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven lost matches against Lauralton Hall, Hand, and Cheshire last week and now has a record of 7-5.

North Haven took a 5-2 defeat at Lauralton Hall on April 30. Junior Julia Migliorini earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match for North Haven. Senior Rachel Petry prevailed by a 6-0, 6-4 final at No. 2 singles.

The following afternoon, the Indians hosted Hand and dropped a 6-1 decision. Migliorini notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles duel.

Then on May 2, the Indians had a home match with Cheshire and lost 4-3. Migliorini prevailed 6-0, 6-0, while Petry won a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Sophomore Anna Wootton won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, defeating an opponent that she had lost to earlier in the season.
