H-K Track Dominates Another Tri-Meet; Baseball Takes First Defeat

Boys’ and Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 1, the Haddam-Killingworth outdoor track program hosted a tri-meet against Coginchaug and East Hampton, and the Cougars’ boys’ and girls’ teams both came away with two victories on the day.

The H-K boys defeated Coginchaug 95-45 and earned a 126-23 win versus East Hampton to improve to 8-0. Leading the way for the Cougars were its event winners: Matt Jennings for the 1,600 (4:44) and 3,200 (10:41), Dalton Brown for the long jump (18-0) and triple jump (40-4), Andrew Meredith in the 800 (2:03), Colin Regan in the 400 (54.4), Seth Regan in the 100 (11.7), Colton Lavioe in the shot put (42-0), and Nate Breiling for the discus (121-8). The boys’ 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 were also victorious.

Meanwhile, the H-K girls’ team improved to 7-1 after defeating Coginchaug 110-40 and notching a 91-59 win against East Hampton. The Cougars received first-place performances from Veronica Chrzanowski in the 100 (12.8), 200 (26.4), long jump (15-10), and triple jump (33-11); as well as Emma Anziano in the 3,200 (13:12), Autumn Coady in the 100 hurdles (17.1), Sadie Strom for the 300 hurdles (50.7), Ashley Duncanson in the 400 (64.4), and Reilly Jenkins in the javelin (79-8). H-K’s 4x400 and 4x800 relays also claimed victory.

Baseball

The H-K baseball team took its first loss of the season last week, but is still standing strong with a record of 13-1 on the year.

H-K doubled up Westbrook by a 4-2 score on April 30. Jon Civiello won his third game on the mound by scattering six hits and striking out six for the Cougars. Owen Marica had three hits, while Ross Meglin, Kyle Crandall, and Tobey Callender each had two hits in the win.

On May 2, the Cougars defeated Valley Regional 8-3. Marica had four hits and three RBI, plus Civiello had three hits and scored four runs to lead the Cougars to victory. Alec Erskine collected his second win by allowing just three hits and striking out eight in relief.

H-K took its first defeat of the spring by dropping a 4-3 decision to Coginchaug on May 4. Devon Geoghegan hit a two-run, two-out single in the seventh inning to drive in the tying and winning runs for the Blue Devils. Callender had three hits and drove in all three runs for H-K.

Girls’ Tennis

The Cougars had a perfect week by recording four wins in as many matches to improve to 7-3.

H-K started the week with a 5-2 victory over Valley Regional on April 30. On May 2, the Cougars took both ends of a doubleheader against Portland by posting a pair of 7-0 decisions. H-K then squeaked by Morgan, 4-3, on May 4.

Boys’ Tennis

H-K took two defeats last week and is now 2-9 on the campaign.

The Cougars lost a 6-0 contest versus Valley Regional on April 30. H-K then took a 7-0 loss to Morgan on May 4.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Cougars moved to 3-7 after grabbing one victory in a three-game week.

H-K picked up win No. 3 on the year thanks to a 16-3 victory over Cromwell on May 1. The Cougars then took a 10-8 defeat versus North Branford on May 3. On May 5, H-K lost a 16-3 contest against Bacon Academy.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K took four defeats last week and is now 0-11 on the year.

The Cougars faced St. Bernard on April 30 and were edged by a 7-6 margin. H-K then took an 18-7 defeat versus Guilford the following day. The Cougars lost a 21-4 contest to North Branford on May 3, before losing to Valley Regional by a 17-5 final on May 5.

Golf

The Cougars stand at 2-3 after losing two matches last week.

H-K took a 170-199 defeat to Cromwell on May 2. Oliver Artus shot a 44 for the Cougars and was followed in the scoring column by Ethan Campbell (49), Mikey Barile (53), and Greg Lynskey (53).

The Cougars later lost a 170-207 decision against Coginchaug on May 3. Artus finished with a score of a 49 for H-K. Kuehn had a score of 52, Lynskey and Barile both shot a 53, and Kaisone Bounphakdy finished with a 57.
