Softball

The Old Saybrook softball team recorded a pair of victories on the road last week to raise its record to 5-6 on the season. The Rams earned a 13-6 win versus Westbrook and then shut out New London by a 13-0 final later in the week.

On April 23, the Rams defeated Westbrook 13-6 in a Shoreline Conference matchup. Old Saybrook’s offense had a big first inning by pushing six runs across the plate, and the Rams added seven more runs throughout the contest.

Old Saybrook Head Coach Katelyn Livingston felt it was a good sign that her offense was clicking, but she was most encouraged by the fact that the Rams never let up after getting an early lead.

“We put up six in the first inning. That speaks volumes about our offense. The girls really took advantage of hitting first and getting to score first,” said Livingston, who is in her second year as head coach. “In high-school sports, when you go up big, it’s easy to get content. We’ve definitely learned that no lead is safe in high-school softball. I teach the girls not to be satisfied and to keep piling on. Keep the pedal to the metal.”

One of the major contributors in the win was junior Maeve Foley, who supplied two doubles, a single, and three RBI hitting out of the No. 3 spot in the order. Sophomore Wendy Bowden was 2-for-4 with a triple. Senior captain pitcher Carly Michaud went the distance for the win, while racking up 13 strikeouts. She also contributed at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double.

The Rams’ bats stayed hot when they took down New London, 13-0, in a non-conference game on April 28. Michaud grabbed another victory with a complete-game shutout and six K’s to go with her 3-for-4 performance at the dish. Michaud led by example on the field in the game, but she’s also the vocal leader of the team, according to Coach Livingston.

“She truly is a leader not just how she plays, but how she represents herself and the team,” Livingston said. “She really embodies the character of a quality captain and leader. She’s helping the younger freshman pitchers, and she’s a role-model for those younger players. She’s a vocal leader on the team, and she’s improved every year along the way.”

Senior captain third baseman Chloe Root went 3-for-4 with a triple and a double to her credit. Coach Livingston said that Root’s leadership style also plays a huge part on her squad.

“She’s always been a leader in the way she plays. She leads by example on the field,” Livingston. “She gets the game going off on the right foot from the leadoff spot. I think she gets the momentum going for us. She’s a great third baseman and a powerhouse.”

Foley also had three base hits in the win, while junior Sarah Howley was 2-for-4 with a double.

The Rams split a pair of matchups in last week’s action for a record of 6-2 on the season.

Jack Coella was 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and four runs, while Cooper Pavlovich had a hit with three RBI and two runs scored. Jaden Rolon was the winning pitcher by going five innings and striking out five. Ryan Dubord pitched two innings of relief and struck out two.

On April 28, the Rams lost an 8-1 contest to Old Lyme at home. The Wildcats jumped out to a four-run lead in the second inning on their way to the win. Colella continued his hot streak at the plate with two more hits and an RBI.

Kyle Savino shot 41 to earn medalist honors for the Rams, and Jack Walsh was right behind with a score of 42. Jay DePalermo was next with a score of 45, and Dean Nobile shot a 50. Ben O’Dell turned in a score of 54.

The next day, Old Saybrook hosted Cromwell at the friendly confines of Fenwick Golf Course, which is a par-35 course. The Rams defeated the Panthers 160-170. Savino came in as the low man again by shooting a 38, followed closely by DePalermo at 39. O’Dell posted a 41, Walsh shot a 42, and Nobile finished with a score of 44.

One of the highlights of the match was the Rams’ No. 1 doubles team of Arina Jiang and Amy Young earning their first win of the season, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, in a dramatic comeback after dropping the first set. The second and third sets saw the duo save multiple match points. Also for Old Saybrook, Gadon and Winiarskyj claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.
