Morgan Boys’ Tennis Refuses to Lose; Boys Lacrosse Splits a Pair

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis team continued to charge through its season by notching two more victories last week to stay undefeated with a record of 8-0.

On April 24, the Huskies defeated Woodstock Academy 7-0 at home. Matt Newfield won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, while Patrick Markovics battled for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position. Vincent Tino won 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 3 match, and JP Nye took the No. 4 contest, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Drew Marzano won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. As for doubles, Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, and Logan Cummings and Calvin Jackson took the No. 2 match by the final of 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.

Two days later, Morgan defeated Old Saybrook 5-2 on the road. The Huskies notched singles victories behind No. 2 Markovics (6-4, 2-6, 6-4), No. 3 Tino (6-1, 6-3), Garrett Johnson (6-1, 6-7, 6-1) at No. 4, and Nye (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) at No. 5. Murray and Nuzzo pulled off another victory at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-2, 6-3.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies played a single match when they faced Old Saybrook at home last week. Morgan took a 6-1 defeat against the Rams.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Morgan won one of its two games last week and is now 5-4 on the season.

On April 24, the Huskies hosted Cromwell and defeated the Panthers 16-1. Ryan Caldwell supplied two goals and an assist, while Matt Lee had a goal and a helper. Quinn Trahant provided a goal and two assists, and Tyler Newfield scored four goals and assisted on another. Tony Coretti, Ford Pender, and Issac Eriksen each scored two goals, plus Sean Fitzgerald and Jon Fiorillo had one goal apiece. Goalie Matt Luchuck made six saves on 11 shots for Morgan, which peppered Cromwell with 37 shots.

Two days later, the Huskies headed to Old Lyme, where they lost an 8-5 contest.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Huskies had a pair of games last week and split the set to move to 3-6 on the year.

Morgan started the week by taking a 16-9 defeat against Valley Regional. Olivia McCray scored three goals and had a pair of assists for the Huskies. Georgia Nye had two goals and an assist, as did Madeline Stopkoski. Emily Davis scored a goal and had a helper, Madison Seeger scored a goal, and Erin Lindsay provided four draw controls, two ground balls, and an assist. Cassidy Shepard turned away 12 shots in goal.

On April 28, Morgan defeated 9-4 Waterford in a road contest. The Huskies were up 5-1 at halftime and in command throughout the game. Stopkoski put four goals in the net and provided an assist. Seeger had two goals and an assist, Robyn Vuilleumier, Nye, and Lindsay each notched a goal; and McCray and Lindsay Narracci both had an assist. McCray won a couple of draw controls, and Lindsay pulled in three. Shepard made 17 saves in the victory.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Morgan had several competitors turn in solid performances at last week’s meet against Lyme-Old Lyme and East Hampton on April 24.

The Huskies’ 4x100 relay of Juan Avila, Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Sam Hauser, Bryce Thomas earned first place with a time of 47.4, and the 4x800 relay of Thomas Southwood, Chayse Lofgren, Justin Mucha, Brett Martin came in second at 9:09.8. Anes Gadun grabbed first place in the 110 hurdles (17.99 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (47.8). Michael Monty earned second in the 110 hurdles, while Patrick Wilson placed second in the 400 (55.8). Jhan Bermeo took second place in the long jump at 16-10 and the triple jump with a leap of 34-8.5. Avila placed first in the triple jump (38-0.5) and the high jump (5-2), and Patrick Wilson finished first in the long jump (17-6.25). In javelin, Hauser’s throw of 110 feet-8 inches was good for first, and Gadun placed second at 93 feet-6 inches. Stephen Zumpano came in second for the discus at 71-4.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Huskies had a meet versus East Hampton and Lyme-Old Lyme last week and saw several notable showings at the meet.

Kate Daley recorded a new personal record in the 3,200-meter run by clocking in at 11:15.9. The 4x800 relay of Daley, Maura Kelly, Issy Ranaudo, and Allie Gardner claimed first at 10:42.1, while 4x100 of Taylor Wyatt, Mikayla Mancini, Alyssa LeMay, and Charlotte Davenport grabbed first with a time of 53.60. The 4x400 team of Ranaudo, Mancini, Gardner, and Kelly placed first at 4:30.4. LeMay earned first in the 200 with her time of 27.5 seconds. In the high jump, Mancini and Charlotte Davenport tied for second place at 4-6. Mancini took first place in the triple jump at 31-10, and Alex Wolf earned second in the long jump with a 14-9.5. In field events, Ashley Annicelli placed second with her throw of 23-11. Sam Mena grabbed first place in discus at (80-6) and second place in javelin at (69-7).

Softball

Morgan won two of its three games last week to improve to 3-7 this season.

The Huskies first took a 13-1 loss versus Coginchaug on April 23. The next day, Morgan faced Portland at home and via an 18-0 shutout. Then April 26, the Huskies earned their second with of the week with a 23-13 victory at Westbrook.

Baseball

The Huskies lost both of their games last week and are now 4-7 on the campaign.

On April 23, Morgan dropped a 16-7 home game against Old Saybrook 16-7. Then on April 26, the Huskies were in Durham to face Coginchaug and lost 12-5.

Golf

The Huskies had a game on the match against Cromwell last week. Morgan took a 177-200 defeat to the Panthers.
