Baseball

The Westbrook baseball squad played two games last week and came away with one victory--a one-run win versos Shoreline Conference rival Valley Regional--to move to 6-4 on the season.

On April 23, the Knights headed to Moodus to take on Hale-Ray and lost a close game by the final score of 3-2. Connor Cruz scored both of Westbrook’s runs and went 3-for-4 on the day. Jack Hayes had a hit and an RBI. Westbrook put a run on the scoreboard in the first inning, but the Noises responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, and then added another run in the second. The Knights made it a one-run game in the fifth, but Hale-Ray hung on for the victory.

Three days later, Westbrook hosted Valley Regional and won a 9-8 slugfest against the Warriors. Jack Hayes went a 3-of-3 at the plate and scored three runs. Cameron Marshall went 2-for 4 with two runs and four RBI, Jason Cordon was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, and Jake Marciniec had two hits with three RBI, in addition to earning the win on the mound. Westbrook took a 6-1 lead in the third inning, and then Valley scored four runs in the fourth. However, the Knights countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 9-5. The Warriors mounted a comeback by scoring three runs in the seventh, before Marciniec set them down for good.

Softball

The Knights lost both of their games last week and are now 2-8 on the year. On April 23, Westbrook faced Old Saybrook and lost a 13-6 contest. Three days later, the Knights lost a home matchup against Morgan, 23-12.

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team won its lone match last week by defeating Valley Regional. On April 23, the Knights headed to Deep River to face the Warriors and prevailed 4-3.

Westbrook took the bulk of the singles matches, including Sara Farnoli, who won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Sarah Davey took a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 match, and Victoria Koplas triumphed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. The singles matches were all in the books before doubles got underway, and Westbrook appeared to be in the cat-bird seat with a 3-1 lead. In the No. 1 doubles match, Westbrook’s tandem of Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi grinded out a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory to seal the win for their team.

Boys’ Tennis

The Knights lost two matches last week to move to 3-6 on the season. On April 23, Westbrook took a 4-3 defeat at Valley Regional. On April 28, the Knights lost to Granby Memorial by a 5-2 final on the road.
