North Haven Girls’ Lacrosse Takes Two to Move to 5-4; Boys’ Lacrosse, Baseball Earn Berths in States

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team played two games last week and came away with a pair of victories to get over the .500 mark with a record of 5-4 for the year. The Indians earned a 15-4 victory over West Haven and then defeated Norwalk 15-11 for their third win in a row and fourth in the last five games.

North Haven opened up with week with a game and West Haven and defeated the Blue Devils 15-4. The Indians used their balanced offense and a tough defense to storm out a 9-1 halftime advantage on their way to the convincing win. Senior Kylie Brandt had another huge game by scoring four goals and handing out five assists for the Indians. Annie Uyeki continued her great junior season with a four-goal performance and a pair of assists. Junior Molly Scarpa scored two goals, while sophomore Madison Fredericks and junior Meg Christoforo both had a goal with two assists. Courtney Babbidge had goal and an assist for the Indians, who also saw fellow senior Josephine Toni and sophomore Callie Kessler net a goal in the victory. Sophomore Kyla Kennealy made nine saves in net for Head Coach Lois Frankforter’s squad.

Three days later, the Indians hosted non-conference squad Norwalk on the new turf field at North Haven Middle School and prevailed 15-11. North Haven surged to a 5-0 lead, but the Bears rallied and were able to close the gap to 9-8 at halftime. The two sides were knotted at 11 midway through the second half, when the Indians stormed ahead by scoring the final four goals of the game. Uyeki finished with five goals and three assists, Brandt had three goals and two assists, Babbidge netted three goals to go with two assists, Fredericks also scored three goals, and Christoforo added an assist in the win. Junior Kasey Cross got the start in goal and made nine saves in the victory.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians split a pair of home matchups last week to move to 7-3 and clinch a berth in the Class M State Tournament. The Indians lost to Guilford and then defeated Shelton by a goal to make states.

On April 23, the Indians hosted Guilford and dropped a 15-4 decision. Senior Zack Orth scored two goals, while junior Jack Broggi and freshman Kasey Mongillo both scored one goal for North Haven.

Two days later, North Haven posted an 8-7 home win over Shelton. The game was tied 5-5 entering the fourth period, where the Indians scored two goals to go up by two. After the officials whistled North Haven for a penalty, the Gaels scored two goals on the man-advantage to tie it up with a few minutes left. With time winding down, Mark Montano dodged a Shelton player, split a double team, and buried the go-ahead goal. Orth, fellow senior Montano, and sophomore Brian Mills each scored two goals, while Orth also had an assist. Broggi and sophomore Donny McInnis both added a goal for the Indians, who saw senior Luigi Coppola make nine saves.

Baseball

North Haven split its two matchups last week to move to 8-3 on the season and earn a berth in the Class L State Tournament. The Indians took a 9-2 loss at Cheshire and then won 12-0 at Quinnipiac Division opponent Xavier to improve to 2-1 in the division.

North Haven took a 9-2 defeat at Cheshire on April 25. The Rams scored five runs in the first inning and went on to get the win. Sophomore Dave Christoforo hit a solo home run and also drove in the Indians’ other run on a double. Senior Peyton Farina singled, doubled, and stole a base; senior Steven Erbe singled and scored, and junior Gianni DeMartino drew a pair of walks. Junior Leo Konopka got the start on the mound for the Indians, who saw Chris Ciarlegio, fellow senior Nate Zalegowski, John Gontarek, and fellow junior Hunter Garthwait all pitch in relief.

Then on April 27, North Haven faced Xavier on the road in a divisional clash and routed the Falcons 12-0. Senior Kevin Lucey hit two home runs and had a single in the victory on his way to collecting five RBI. Christoforo went yard for the second straight game to go with a single, a walk, three runs, and three RBI. Erbe went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs, and two RBI; Farina had four stolen bases, a pair of singles, three runs scored, and an RBI; junior Matt Solomon singled twice and scored a run; and sophomore Matt DeRosa had two base hits with a stolen base. Senior Zach Pincince earned the win on mound by pitching six scoreless innings, before the game was called due to the mercy rule.

Softball

North Haven took a loss to Lyman Hall and then defeated Law last week to move to 7-3 on the season.

North Haven started off the week with a home game versus Lyman Hall and took a 3-1 defeat to drop to 2-1 in Oronoque Division play. Junior Sarah Lombardi went 3-for-3 for the Indians and scored their lone run of the game in the sixth inning.

On April 25, the Indians posted a 6-4 victory at Law to avenge a 4-3 home loss against that squad earlier in the year. The Indians scored a run in the first inning and five runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Law put up four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t complete the comeback, as junior Lauren Card pitched a complete game with six strikeouts to get the win. Lombardi had another big day by going 3-for-4, including a home run, with two RBI. Sophomore Eryn Sheeley was 2-for-4, and junior Olivia Petersen went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Golf

North Haven hit the links at Wallingford Country Club for a pair of matches last week. After taking a couple of defeats in their first contest, the Indians notched their first win of the year by defeating East Haven the following day.

North Haven had a tri-match against Lyman Hall and Guilford at Wallingford Country Club on April 23. The Indians totaled a team score of 211 and took defeats against Guilford (182) and Lyman Hall (189) on the par-35 course. North Haven junior Ian Crowther shot a 46 to lead the Indians, marking his third round in the 40’s this year. Junior Alex Kirtland scored a 50, while sophomore Julia Raposo finished with a 57. Junior Mike Collins made his first appearance in a varsity match and posted a personal-low score of 58. Junior Andrew Johnson also competed for North Haven and finished with a 62.

The next day, the Indians hosted East Haven at Wallingford Country Club and prevailed 197-240 against the Yellowjackets. Kirtland was the match medalist by turning in a score of 43 for North Haven. Crowther scored a 45, Raposo had a score of 52, and Collins shot a 57 in the victory. Johnson wasn’t far behind as he returned to the clubhouse with a score of 58.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Indians hosted Oronoque Division opponent Cross and non-conference foe Amistad at Vanacore Field on April 24. North Haven posted a 79-71 victory versus the Governors and defeated Amistad 137-12 to improve to 6-2 this spring.

Junior Erica Marriott turned in a dominating performance by winning four events for North Haven. Marriott took first place in the 100 with a time of 12.7 seconds, won the 200 in 27.2, finished first in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet-7.5 inches, and also won the triple jump at 32-7. Junior Giselle Zumerchik finished first in the 100 hurdles (16.3) and the 300 hurdles (51.3). Kyla DelVecchio won the javelin (89-4), fellow senior Jacqui Weaver took first in the pole vault (6-6), and senior Ashley Brown finished first in the 400 with a time of 62.0 seconds. Also, the 4x400 relay of Brown, junior Camille Sahirul, sophomore Sammy Curcio, and senior Macey DiCarlo came in first place by timing in at 4:30.40.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians competed in a pair of road meets last week, first traveling to Bowen Field in New Haven to face Cross, followed by a contest at Lyman Hall. North Haven took defeats against both teams and now has a record of 6-4.

On April 24, North Haven dropped an 84-66 decision at Oronoque Division opponent Cross to drop to 2-1 in the division. Sophomore Ethan Okwuosa won three events for the Indians by placing first in the high jump (5 feet-6 inches), the triple jump (41-9), and the long jump (19 feet-0 inches). Junior Robert Farley took first place in both the 110 high hurdles (16.8 seconds) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (45.3). Sophomore Kyle Maruca finished first in the shot put with a throw of 45-7.5.

Two days later, the Indians headed to Wallingford to take on Lyman Hall and lost 94-52. Eric Spignesi won the pole vault (11-2), fellow junior John Crispi took first place in the high jump (5-0), senior Eric Milliard finished first in the shot put (44-6), and Maruca won the discus (120-6) for the Indians.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven improved to 7-2 by notching wins over Lyman Hall and Career last week.

The Indians posted a 6-1 home win over Lyman Hall on April 23. Junior Julia Migliorini won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match, while senior Rachel Petry prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Junior Lily Mezzi recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles, and sophomore Anna Wootton won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. For doubles, North Haven’s No. 1 team of senior Katrina Nadonly and sophomore Kara Stevens played a long three-set match in which they took a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 defeat. At the No. 2 spot, junior Zoe Bowerman and senior Avery Hill won 6-1, 6-2. The No. 3 team of juniors Daniella Bryson and Jessica Tran earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory for the Indians.

Three days later, North Haven claimed a 7-0 win against Career at the East Shore Athletic Complex. Migliorini, Petry, Mezzi, and Wootton all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores in the singles matches. On the doubles court, Nadolny and Stevens prevailed 6-0, 6-1; Hill and Bowerman claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win; and Bryson and Tran also won 6-0, 6-0.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians took defeats against three SCC heavyweights last week and now have a record of 1-6 on the year.

North Haven took a 6-1 road loss to Fairfield Prep on April 23. Junior Nick Cristante recorded a big win in the No. 1 singles match by defeating the Jesuits’ Peter Haley 6-4, 4-6, 12-10.

On April 26, the Indians lost to Amity 6-1 at North Haven Athletic Complex. Junior Max Petruzziello earned a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 win in the No. 4 singles match for North Haven.

Two days later, North Haven played a match and Hand and dropped a 7-0 decision.
