H-K Softball Closing in on States; Boys’ Lacrosse Blanks Old Saybrook, 8-0

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team won two of three last week to move to 7-2 and stand just one win away from solidifying a spot in the Class M State Tournament.

The Cougars took down Old Lyme 7-3 on April 23. The game was tied 3-3 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Faith Mauri doubled home two runs and Ali Halligan followed with a booming two-run homer for a four-run advantage. Amanda Minervino went 4-for-4 at the dish for the Cougars. Brooke LaTouche got the start on the mound and pitched a solid game, before being relieved in the sixth inning by Faith Torello, who picked up her third win of the season.

H-K then took a 9-4 defeat against Rocky Hill on April 26. Mauri had three hits and scored two runs for the Cougars.

H-K bounced back big time by recording a dominant 20-2 victory over Portland on April 28. Rachel Mauri paced the Cougars with three hits and six RBI. Also contributing three hits each were Minervino and Faith Mauri. Madison Gamache went 3-for-3 with a RBI. H-K worked 17 walks from the Portland pitchers, and Olivia Whitehead walked five times with three runs scored.

Boys’ Lacrosse

H-K earned its second win of the year by blanking Old Saybrook last week and is now 2-5 this season.

The Cougars defeated the Rams in convincing fashion via an 8-0 shutout on April 23. Five days later, H-K lost a 12-9 game at St. Bernard-Wheeler.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K lost a 19-7 contest against Old Saybrook on April 24. The Cougars now have a record of 0-7 on the year.

Golf

The Cougars took their first loss of the campaign last week to move to 2-1 this spring.

H-K started off by notching a 196-214 final over Hale-Ray on April 24. Oliver Artus shot a 43 to earn match medalist honors, while Greg Lynskey (49), Ethan Campbell (52), and Mikey Barile (52) also competed for the Cougars.

H-K took a 170-204 loss versus Old Saybrook on April 26. Artus led H-K with a 45, Andrew Kuehn scored a 50, Kaisone Bounphakdy posted a score of 54, and Barile finished his day with a round of 55.

Girls’ Tennis

The Cougars are now 3-6 after taking recent defeats against rivals Old Saybrook and North Branford.

H-K took a 6-1 loss to Old Lyme on April 23, and then the Cougars were edged by North Branford, 4-3, on April 26.

Emily Beck prevailed 6-0, 6-2 against Old Lyme. Facing North Branford, Beck won by default, Abby Larkin triumphed 6-4, 6-2, and the No. 3 doubles team of Lauren Miller and Hanna Levitt also prevailed.

Boys’ Tennis

H-K stands at 2-7 after earning its second victory of the year last week.

The Cougars took a 7-0 loss to Old Lyme on April 23, but then defeated North Branford 3-1 on April 26.
