Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Adds 3 Wins in Undefeated Season; Boys Lose Two

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team stayed on a roll to start the 2018 season as the Knights recently picked up wins against Old Lyme, North Branford, and Cromwell to improve to 7-0.

On April 17, the Knights had a home match against Shoreline Conference rival Old Lyme and won 7-0. Sara Farnoli grabbed a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 1 singles match, and Victoria Koplas earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 contest. At the No. 3 spot, Julianna Fabrizi scored a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win, while Olivia Archer shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 match. In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 team of Lexie Vumback and Alyssa Esposito won by default, as did the No. 3 team of Merry Farrell and Skyler Jacobs.

The next day, North Branford came to town and the Knights snagged a 5-2 win. Farnoli was victorious, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 1 battle, while Koplas won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at the No. 3 position. Westbrook swept the doubles matches with Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi winning 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, Vumback and Esposito prevailing 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, and Archer and Juliana Fabrizi grabbing a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 3 match.

Finally, on April 20, Westbrook headed to Cromwell and won a close 4-3 match against the Panthers. Farnoli (2-6, 6-1, 6-3) and Koplas (6-1, 6-3) claimed victory at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions, respectively. The Knights got their last two wins from their top two doubles duos of Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi (3-6, 6-0, 6-4), and Vumback and Esposito (6-2, 6-1).

Boys’ Tennis

The Knights took a pair of recent defeats to move to 3-4 for the season. On April 17, Westbrook took a 6-1 loss at Old Lyme. Three days later, Knights dropped a 6-1 home decision versus Cromwell.

Softball

The Knights dropped contests against Cromwell, Haddam-Killingworth, and Hale-Ray in last week’s action and now have a record of 2-6.

On April 17, Westbrook hosted Cromwell and took a 15-0 defeat. Right fielder Lauren Wright had a double for Westbrook in the loss.

The next day, the Knights headed to Haddam-Killingworth and lost a 15-1 contest against the Cougars. Madison Marshall went 2-for-2 and picked up an RBI on the evening. Callie Newberg, Madison Maura, and Olivia Pohorylo all had base hits for the Knights.

On April 20, Westbrook lost on the road against Hale-Ray, 18-1. Maura notched another hit and scored the Knights’ lone run, while Jamie Merola had two hits and an RBI.
