Warriors Girls’ Tennis Climbs to 6-2 with 3 Wins; Baseball Walks-Off Old Lyme

Girls’ Tennis

The Valley Regional girls’ tennis team notched three more victories in last week’s action and is now sporting a record of 6-2 on the season. The Warriors defeated Portland, Morgan, and Coginchaug for a clean sweep on the week.

On April 17, Head Coach Sally Riggio’s squad won a road match against Portland by the final score of 7-0. In singles action, Emma Hunt-Bauman secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position. Then at the No. 2 spot, Myah Martinez took the win, 6-0, 6-1. Jessica Weinstein won the No. 3 match, 6-3, 6-1, and Taylor Harpin won No. 4 match via forfeit. For doubles, the teams of Ellie Flynn and Caroline Baldwin (6-0, 6-0), Allie Champion and Ada Ramos (6-0, 6-1), and Lizzy Jackson and Alex Halsey (6-0, 6-0) were victorious the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 matches, respectively.

The next day, the Warriors came back home to face Morgan and won the match 6-1. Valley took all four singles matches as Hunt-Bauman won 6-1, 7-5; Martinez triumphed 3-6, 6-2, 6-2; Weinstein swept her match 6-0, 6-0; and Harpin won 6-2, 7-6. In doubles, the teams of Flynn and Baldwin (6-3, 6-2), and Champion and Ramos (6-0, 6-2) prevailed for the Warriors.

On April 20, the Warriors hosted Coginchaug and nabbed another 6-1 victory. In singles, Valley saw wins from Hunt-Bauman (6-2, 1-6, 6-4), Martinez (7-6, 7-5), and Harpin (6-3, 3-6, 6-4). The Warriors swept the doubles matches with Flynn and Bauman claiming a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot, Champion and Baldwin winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, and Jill DeJongh and Halsey taking the No. 3 match by the score of 1-6, 6-4, 7-4.

Boys’ Tennis

The Warriors had a win and a loss in last week’s slate of games and are now 4-3 on the year. On April 18, Valley headed to Morgan and dropped a 5-2 decision to the Huskies. Then on April 20, the Warriors claimed victory on the road 5-2 against Coginchaug.

Baseball

The Valley baseball team won two of its three games last week by defeating Morgan and Old Lyme to boost its record to 5-3.

On April 17, the Warriors defeated Morgan 12-7 in a road contest. Garrhett Watrous had a heavy hand in the victory with a double and a home run for Head Coach Brian Drinkard’s squad. Colin Sparaco picked up the win on the mound, partly thanks to two outstanding defensive plays in left field from Blair Allen.

The following day, the Warriors lost a 4-2 decision at Haddam-Killingworth.

Then on April 20, Valley hosted Old Lyme and won a 3-2 game with a walk-off pinch-hit double from Zach Stevens to score Jacob Yeagar in the bottom of the seventh inning. Josh Ross had two hits and two RBI in the contest. Sam Swap struck out nine on the hill for the Warriors and got the win to put him at 3-0 on the season.

Softball

The Warriors took their first two defeats of the season last week as they dropped contests on the road against Old Lyme (8-5) and North Branford (6-2). Valley’s record stands at 5-2 on the year.

On April 18, the Warriors fell behind Old Lyme 4-1 by the third inning, but they tried to chip away by plating two runs in the fourth to cut the lead to one run. The Wildcats came back by scoring three more runs in the fifth inning and went on to the get the win. Alex Figuenick went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Lexi Ross also went 2-for-4 and added two runs and an RBI for the Warriors.

Two days later, Valley had a game in North Branford, where the host Thunderbirds posted an early lead that they never relinquished on their way to defeating Valley. Figuenick picked up another double in the loss.

Crew

Valley attended a regatta at Lake Quonnipaug in Guilford, where the Warriors’ crew first-year rowers competed against Guilford and East Lyme,on April 11.

The course was 1,350 meters, and rowers faced a headwind of 14 miles per hour. The boys’ boat finished with a time of 6:25, trailing the first-place boat by 27 seconds. The girls’ boat came in second with a time of 5:58.9, which was 21.9 seconds behind the winning boat.

Golf

The Warriors lost a home match against Coginchaug at the Fox Hopyard Country Club last week. On April 20, Valley took a 163-242 defeat against the Blue Devils.
