Morgan Boys’ Tennis Still Unblemished; Baseball Wins a Blowout and a Nail-Biter

Boys’ Tennis

The Huskies’ boys’ tennis team had two home matches last week and won both of them to remain undefeated with a record of 6-0 on the season.

On April 18, Morgan claimed a 5-2 victory against Valley Regional. Vincent Tino won 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 3 singles position, and Garrett Johnson took the No. 4 singles match by the score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. The No. 5 singles contest went to Drew Marzano by forfeit. As for doubles, Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, while Logan Cummings and Antonio Tran took the No. 2 match by forfeit.

On April 21, the Huskies defeated Cromwell 5-2, powered by wins in four of the five singles matches. Morgan received victories from Matt Newfield (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) in the No. 1 singles spot, Patrick Markovics (6-4, 6-1) at No. 2, Tino (7-5, 6-1) at No. 3, and Chris Nuzzo (6-2, 7-5) in the No. 5 singles match. The team of JP Nye and Calvin Jackson posted a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 doubles contest.

Girls’ Tennis

Morgan won one of its three matches last week and is now 2-6 for the year.

The Huskies’ win came at home against Portland on April 20 as Morgan edged the Highlanders 4-3. The Huskies were led by their doubles teams with the No. 1 duo of Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings winning 6-1, 6-0; Grace Hull and Becca Cockley sweeping the No. 2 match, 6-0, 6-0; and Ingrid Rodriguez and Maria Beltran taking the No. 3 contest, 6-1, 6-0. Morgan received its lone singles victory from No. 4 player Ava Arujo, who won 6-1, 6-7, 6-2.

The next day, the Huskies lost to Cromwell on the road, 7-0.

Earlier in the week, Morgan took a 6-1 defeat at Valley Regional on April 18. The Huskies’ victory came from the No. 3 doubles pairing of Rodriguez and Beltran, who claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team claimed victory in two of its last three matchups to improve its record to 4-5 this spring.

On April 17, the Huskies lost a home contest to Valley Regional by the final of 12-7. Morgan had nine hits in the loss with senior captain Nick Caprio providing three of them, plus two RBI. After falling behind, the Huskies rallied by scoring four runs in the sixth inning—led by Caprio, Ryan Egan, and Mike Menacho—to cut the deficit to two runs, before ultimately losing to the Warriors.

The following day, Morgan’s bats came alive when the team grabbed a 24-1 victory at Creed-Hillhouse. Senior Kyle Gray picked up the win on the mound for the Huskies, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out five. Gray was relieved by senior Russ Green, who closed out the game for Morgan. The Huskies racked up 16 hits with AJ Fritz and Kyle Burt getting three hits apiece. Sophomore Kyle Suraci led the Huskies with four RBI on a single, a double, and two walks. Caprio, Green, and Egan all had two hits for the Huskies. Menacho and Cameron Carlson both contributed a hit, as well. Morgan played an errorless game on defense.

On April 20, the Huskies were back at home, where they edged Hale-Ray 7-6. The Huskies took the early lead, and Suraci pitched a gem to earn the victory. Suraci gave up two hits over four innings, striking out 10 without allowing an earned run or a walk. Mike Zingarella relieved Suraci on the mound until Caprio came on in the seventh to record the last three outs and get the save. The Huskies had 11 hits on the day with AJ Fritz, Jack O’Sullivan, Kyle Burt, and Green all notching multi-hit games.

Softball

The Huskies picked up their first win of season last week to move to 1-6 on the year.

Morgan snagged its first victory by defeating Wilbur Cross 15-3 on April 20. Earlier in the week, the Huskies took a 16-6 loss at Haddam-Killingworth on April 17. The next day, Morgan was back home and lost a 19-4 contest against Hale-Ray.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Morgan split its pair of games last week and move to 4-3 on the year.

On April 17, the Huskies headed to North Branford, where they won 19-6. Then on April 21, Morgan took a 20-3 loss at Somers.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Huskies took a couple of losses last week and are now 2-5 on the season.

On April 17, Morgan hosted North Branford at the Indian River Complex and lost 19-8. Madeline Stopkoski scored five goals for the Huskies, and Lindsay Narracci had a goal with two assists. Joelle Vuilleumier collected two draw controls, two ground balls, a goal, and an assist, while Madison Seeger scored a goal. Robyn Vuilleumier and Delaney Mastriano each had an assist in the defeat. North Branford outshot Morgan 30-16 with Cassidy Shepard making 11 saves in net.

On April 21, Morgan hosted Fairfield Ludlowe and lost by the score of 19-0. Once again, Shepard had 11 saves in the game.
