Cote Throws One-Hitter in Rams’ Walk-Off Win; Girls’ Tennis Gets 2 Out of 3

Baseball

The Old Saybrook baseball team notched a pair of home wins last week and improved its record to 5-1 on the year.

On April 17, the Rams squared off against Coginchaug and secured a walk-off victory in a tight 1-0 contest. With the game scoreless through six innings, Old Saybrook strung together back-to-back walks by Jordan Butler and Sebby Gallitto in the bottom of the seventh to put a couple runners on base for Patrick Kelley. After a wild pitch that advanced the runners, Kelley hit a line drive to left field to drive in the winning run. Dan Cote pitched a one-hitter in which he fanned five for the Rams. Haydon Lockhart added a hit in the victory.

The following day, Old Saybrook defeated Hale-Ray in a slugfest by the score of 12-8. Old Saybrook ran away with the game early by scoring three runs in the second inning, two in the third, three in the fourth, and four more in the fifth. Ryan DuBord did some damage at the dish by getting three hits, three RBI, and scoring a pair of runs for the Rams. Lockhart had two hits, an RBI, and a run, while Kelley had two hits and two runs. Jack Colella and Butler each had a hit, two RBI, and a run, plus Cooper Pavlovich had a hit, an RBI, and a run in the win. DuBord struck out 10 in a five-inning effort to earn the victory.

Softball

The Rams dropped two games at home this past week and now have 3-6 record this season.

Old Saybrook lost 22-10 against Hale-Ray on April 17. The game was tied 8-8 after three, but Hale-Ray had some big innings late to get the win. Chloe Root went 3-for-5 with two homers and one single, reaching base in all five of her plate appearances. Maeve Foley was 2-for-5 with a home run and a single, while Emiley Wilson and Carly Michaud each had a base hit.

The next day, the Rams dropped a 15-2 decision to Coginchaug. Root, Foley, and Sarah Lombardi all had one hit for the Old Saybrook.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook won two of its three matches last week to move to 4-3 on the season.

On April 17, the Rams lost a home contest against Haddam-Killingworth, 4-3. No. 2 singles player Sam Fucci (6-2, 6-0) earned Old Saybrook’s lone singles victory on the day. In doubles, Katie Conklin and Audra Giugno won 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 1, while the No. 2 duo of Kristina McNeish and Claudia Winiarskyj prevailed 6-7, 7-5, 6-2.

The next day, the Rams defeated Old Lyme 6-1 at home. Tanya Gianitsos won her No. 1 singles match 7-5, 4-6, 6-1; Fucci took the No. 2 match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4; and Anna Hester won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 position. Old Saybrook swept all the doubles matches as Conklin and Giugno earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot, while the teams of Winjarskyj and McNeish, and Alsback and Jewelia Taylor both won via forfeit

On April 20, the Rams traveled to North Branford and defeated the Thunderbirds in a close one, 4-3. Old Saybrook saw wins from Gianitsos (6-2, 2-6, 6-1) and Hester (6-2, 6-4) on the singles court. Doubles victories came from the Alice Gadon and Winiarskyj (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 2 position, plus McNeish and Taylor (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3.

Boys’ Tennis

Old Saybrook took its first defeat of the season last week and is now 4-1. On April 18, the Rams headed to Old Lyme to battle the Wildcats took a 6-1 loss.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams split their two contests last week and now have a mark of 3-2 on the year. On April 17, the Rams had a home matchup against Old Lyme and lost 9-8. On April 21, Old Saybrook was on the road to face Northwest Catholic and defeated the Lions 13-10.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Rams lost their only game last week and move to 2-6 in their campaign. On April 19, Old Saybrook hosted Valley Regional and dropped a 5-0 contest. The Rams had 12 shots on goal to the Warriors’ 19, and Keaton Roarick made 16 saves for Old Saybrook.
