Yellowjackets’ Softball Wins Two After Returning from Florida; Baseball Blows Out Foran

Softball

The East Haven softball squad returned from its annual trip to Florida and pulled off victories against West Haven and Stamford to improve to 5-3 this year.

On April 20, the Yellowjackets topped West Haven 2-0 in an SCC Quinnipiac Division game. Tori Heaphy turned in a dominant effort on the mound by tossing a complete-game shutout for East Haven, which improved to 1-1 in the division. Selena Mauro and Brooke Clancy both drove home a run in the victory.

The very next day, the Easties battled non-conference opponent Stamford and won 14-10. It was the second time these two teams squared off, and East Haven completed a season sweep of Stamford after previously defeating the Black Knights 18-10 on April 7. In this win, East Haven jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning, three in the third, and six in the fourth to take a commanding 12-2 advantage. Rebecca Flynn launched her first career home run in the win, while Julia SanGiovanni and Kayla Rosario had three hits apiece for the Yellowjackets, who saw Mauro earn the victory on the mound.

Baseball

The Yellowjackets stand at 5-4 after winning one of their three games last week. East Haven topped Foran, before losing to Xavier and North Haven.

On April 18, the Easties routed Foran 10-2 behind a great effort on the mound by Ryan Spano. Offensively, Nate Furino went 5-for-5 with a RBI, while Spano recorded two hits in the win.

Two days later, East Haven took on Xavier and lost 8-5 in 10 innings. Nate Furino pitched a stellar game for East Haven, which tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to send it to extras, where the Falcons ultimately won it.

On April 21, East Haven lost 7-5 against North Haven. Luis Vega had three hits with a run scored, and Spano scored a pair of runs, hit a double, and drew a walk.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven played four matches last week and came away with one victory to put its record to 2-5. The Easties lost to North Haven, Sheehan, and Mercy, before capping the week with a win over Career.

On April 16, North Haven defeated East Haven 7-0. Two days later, East Haven took a 6-1 loss to Sheehan in which Emma Luden claimed the Yellowjakcets’ victory at No. 4 singles.

On April 20, the Easties dropped a 6-1 decision to Sheehan. Jenna Pane was victorious in a come-from-behind win at No. 1 singles by the score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

To finish the week, the Yellowjackets beat Career 5-2. Wins in singles came from Pane (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 and Jade Roberts at No. 4 (6-2, 7-5). East Haven swept the doubles matches as Luden and Riya Patel won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Sophia Angueira and Kelly Wysocki prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, and Carolyn Miller and Siya Patel won via forfeit at No. 3.

Boys’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets took three defeats last week and are now 2-4 this year. East Haven lost all three matches by 7-0 scores, losing to Branford on April 16, Fairfield Prep the next day, and Amity on April 20.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

East Haven was in Wallingford for a quad-meet against host Lyman Hall, Foran, and Notre Dame-West Haven on April 18 and took defeats against all three teams. The Yellowjackets lost to Lyman Hall (116-34), Foran (80-66), and Notre Dame (56.5-49.5).

Jordan Ingram took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.2 seconds for the Easties. The 4x100 relay team of Max Kwashie, Ingram, Joe Castellano, and Ryan Cordova also won by clocking in at 45.8 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets took a trip to Hamden on April 17 for a quad-meet that featured Guilford and Cheshire. East Haven posted a 1-2 record by beating Guilford (70-41), while losing to Hamden (64-48) and Cheshire (74-39).

Kisha Francois won three individual events to score plenty of points for East Haven. Francois was victorious in the 100-meter dash at 12.7 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 27.2 seconds, and the long jump at 16 feet-10 inches. Molly Mazzucco won in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet-8 inches. The 4x400 relay squad of Haley Montesanto, Isabella Ragaini, Katie Maffeo, and Mazzucco also won with a time of 4:34.
