North Haven Baseball Gets Wins Against Shelton and East Haven; Girls’ Tennis Takes Three

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team opened up SCC Quinnipiac Division play by facing divisional opponents Branford and East Haven to go with a game versus Shelton last week. North Haven lost to Branford (5-2), defeated Shelton (4-2), and then beat East Haven (7-5) to improve to 7-2 overall with a record of 1-1 in the Quinnipiac this season.

North Haven hosted Branford on April 18 and took a 5-2 loss in its divisional opener. Branford scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, and two more in the fifth for a 4-0 lead on its way to the win. Senior Zach Pincince pitched the first 1.1 innings for the Indians, Chris Ciarleglio threw three innings, and fellow senior Nate Zalegowski pitched 2.1 scoreless innings. Senior Steven Erbe and sophomore Matt DeRosa both went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

North Haven then hit the road to face Shelton on April 20 and doubled up the Gaels, 4-2. The Indians trailed 2-0 entering the fifth inning, but tied the game by plating a pair of runs, and then scored two more in the sixth to take the lead. Junior Leo Konopka gave up two runs in the first inning, but settled down and allowed just two hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Senior Luca Lawrence pitched two scoreless innings to earn his third win of the year, and then Ciarlegio retired the last two batters for the save.

Kevin Lucey doubled home fellow senior captain Peyton Farina with the go-ahead run and went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored, and an RBI for the day. Hunter Garthwait was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and an RBI; fellow junior Matt Solomon had a double with a walk and an RBI, sophomore Matt DeRosa doubled with an RBI, and Farina had double with a walk and a run scored.

The next day, the Indians notched a 7-5 victory at East Haven. North Haven was up 6-3 when the Yellowjackets scored twice in the fifth inning, but the Indians came back with an insurance run in the top of the seventh and hung on for the win. Junior Ben Sbabo started on the mound, and Lawrence earned his fourth win of the year by pitching 6.2 innings of relief, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with seven K’s. Farina had a big day at the dish by going 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Senior Andrew Laudano had two hits and two RBI, Garthwait had a pair of base hits, Solomon singled and scored two runs, and sophomore Dave Christoforo had a single with an RBI in the win.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven notched wins against East Haven, Foran, and West Haven last week to raise its record to 5-2 on the season.

The Indians hosted East Haven at North Haven Health & Racquet Club on April 16 and defeated the Yellowjackets 7-0. Junior Julia Migliorini won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while senior Rachel Petry recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 singles position. Junior Lily Mezzi won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and sophomore Anna Wootton prevailed 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 doubles match. In the doubles matches, the No. 1 team of senior Katrina Nadolny and sophomore Kara Stevens won a 6-1, 6-0 decision, senior Avery Hill and junior Zoe Bowerman won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles match, and the No. 3 team of juniors Jessica Tran and Daniella Bryson also won 6-0, 6-0.

Two days later, the Indians captured a 6-1 win versus Foran at North Haven Athletic Complex. Migliorini and Petry both won 6-0, 6-0 decisions, while Mezzi prevailed 6-4, 6-1 and Wootton earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Hill and Bowerman recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory, and the team of Tran and Bryson won 6-2, 6-3.

Then on April 20, North Haven earned a 7-0 win at West Haven. Migliorini (6-1, 6-0), Petry (6-2, 6-2), Mezzi (6-0, 6-4), and Wooton (6-0, 6-0) were all victorious in singles play. The No. 1 doubles team of Nadolny and sophomore Claire Looney earned a 6-4, 6-4 win for the Indians. Hill and Bowerman won 6-0, 6-0, while the team of Bryson and Tran prevailed 6-1, 6-0.

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven squeaked out their first win of the year by defeating Foran last week, after which the Indians dropped a contest against Cheshire move to 1-3.

The Indians hosted Foran on April 17 and posted a 4-3 victory. The contest featured a different format with each match a one-setter to eight points. Junior Nick Cristante prevailed 8-2 in the No. 1 singles match, while senior Riley Powell netted an 8-4 win in the No. 2 duel. The No. 1 doubles team of junior Quinn Dallai and freshman Tanner Powell won in a tiebreaker by the final of 9-8 (10-7) to solidify the victory. The No. 3 duo of sophomore Laekhram Singh and freshman Matt Labanara won their match, 8-6.

Then on April 20, North Haven had a home match against Cheshire and lost 5-2.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

North Haven competed in a quad-meet at Sacred Heart Academy on April 17 and came away with one victory. The Indians earned an 88-61 win versus Law, took an 84-65 loss to the host Sharks, and lost to Shelton 97-53 at the meet.

Girls’ Lacrosse

North Haven had three home games last week and won two of three to move to 3-4 on the season. The Indians defeated Hamden, lost to Cheshire, and then routed Berlin to cap off the week.

North Haven hosted Hamden and captured a 15-9 victory on April 17. The Indians used a balanced offensive attack to jump out to a 9-3 halftime lead and went on to get the win. Senior Kylie Brandt netted five goals for the Indians, who also received two goals apiece from juniors Meg Christoforo and Annie Uyeki, and sophomore Callie Kessler. Senior Courtney Babbidge, juniors Molly Scarpa and Jill Rowland, and sophomore Madison Fredericks each added a goal, while Uyeki and senior Josephine Toni both had an assist. Junior Casey Kross made seven saves in net to get the win.

Two days later, the Indians had a home game against Cheshire and took an 18-4 defeat. Brandt scored two goals, Uyeki had a goal with an assist, sophomore Madison Fredericks scored a goal, and Babbidge added an assist for North Haven.

Then on April 21, North Haven hosted Berlin in a non-conference game and prevailed 18-7. The Indians led 9-4 at halftime and then outscored the Redcoats 8-2 in the second stanza on their way to the lopsided win. Brandt led the Indians’ offensive surge by scoring five goals and handing out four assists, while Uyeki had four goals with three assists. Junior Meg Christoforo scored four goals and had an assist, Babbidge had two goals with two assists, Fredericks chipped in with two goals and an assist, and junior Molly Scarpa had an assist. Sophomore Kyla Kennealy made 11 saves in goal for the Indians.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians defeated Sheehan and then lost to Xavier last week to stand at 6-2 on the year.

On April 18, the Indians hosted Sheehan and prevailed 10-1. Three days later, North Haven was on the road to face Xavier and dropped a 12-11 overtime decision against the Falcons. Junior Jack Broggi scored four goals for North Haven, while freshman Kasey Mongillo netted three goals. Kyle Pearson had two goals, fellow senior Zack Orth scored two goals to go with an assist, sophomore Brian Mills had a goal and an assist, and senior Mark Montano scored a goal.
