H-K Softball Scores 40 During Huge Week; Baseball Makes States at 8-0

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball squad had a big week on the field, especially at the plate, by scoring a combined 40 runs between its three victories, while improving to 5-1 on the year.

The Cougars defeated Morgan 16-6 on April 17. H-K rallied from a 5-0 deficit by scoring the next 15 runs for a 10-run victory. Pitcher Brooke LaTouche picked up her first victory of the season after returning from an injury. She also had a hit and a sacrifice fly for two RBI. Rachel Mauri had a three-run double, and her sister Faith Mauri hit a solo home run. Olivia Whitehead had two hits and three RBI for the Cougars.

H-K put together another double-digit outburst by recording 15-1 win over Westbrook the next day. Adelle Biondi earned the victory on the hill, marking her first of the year. Rachel Mauri was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Faith Mauri had a triple, a single, and scored three runs; and Whitehead chipped in with two base knocks and three RBI.

The Cougars concluded the week with a 9-0 shutout of East Hampton on April 20. Ali Halligan led the Cougars with three hits, including a three-run home run and two singles, with four RBI. Adelle Biondi relieved LaTouche in the fourth inning to gain her second win of the season. In five appearances this season, LaTouche has allowed no earned runs.

Baseball

The Cougars qualified for the Class M State Tournament after posting three more wins last week. H-K remains undefeated with a record of 8-0 on the campaign.

Haddam-Killingworth defeated Valley Regional by a 4-2 final on April 18. Rydel won his second game of the year, allowing three hits and striking out six. Darren Hiller had two hits, while Trevor Rydel, Kyle Crandall, and Owen Marica all drove in a run during a three-run second inning. Ben Alonzo and Ross Meglin added doubles in the win.

H-K won by that same 4-2 score versus Coginchaug on April 20. Jon Civiello earned his first victory by scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run. Civiello, Tobey Callender, and Jackson Parmentier each had two hits, while Crandall drove in two runs.

The Cougars then clinched their berth in states with a 4-1 win over Old Lyme the following afternoon. Hiller, Alonzo, and Meglin had two hits and an RBI each to lead the Cougars. Christopher Garrelts won his second game on the hill by scattering four hits and striking out seven.

Girls’ Tennis

The Cougars upped their record to 3-4 after notching a pair of victories last week. H-K squeaked out a 4-3 win over Old Saybrook on April 17. The Cougars then earned their second straight victory with a 7-0 sweep of East Hampton/Hale-Ray the next day.

H-K’s win against Old Saybrook were delivered by Emily Beck (6-1, 6-1), Alivia Smith (6-7, 6-3, 6-1), and Abby Larkin (3-6, 6-1, 6-2) in singles. For doubles, Payton Paszak and Tara Lamb prevailed 6-0, 6-2 for the Cougars.

Facing East Hampton/Hale-Ray, Beck, Smith, and Larkin won their singles matches, while the teams of Neve Blanton and Hannah Stankiewicz (6-0, 6-2), Lauren Miller and Tara Lamb (6-1, 7-5), along with Paszak and Ashley Hamilton (6-0, 6-0) were victorious on the doubles court.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Cougars played only one game last week, and it was an overtime contest against Old Lyme. H-K took 9-8 loss in double overtime to the Wildcats on April 20 to drop to 1-4 on the year.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K is now 0-6 after taking two defeats last week. The Cougars dropped a 15-4 decision to Waterford on April 17 and then lost Old Lyme by a 15-5 final on April 20.
