The Guilford softball team improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in SCC Hammonasset Division play following an excellent week that saw the Indians get two wins, including one that resulted in a no-hitter. Guilford defeated Lyman Hall 8-5 on April 19 and then shut out division opponent Career 13-0 the next day as Amanda King and Ema Signore combined to throw a no-hitter

In the Lyman Hall win, King struck out eight to earn the win for Guilford. Ava Gladwin led the offense with three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI.

“It was a good, tough win today by the girls. Playing on a wet field, with rain off and on, it was tough for Amanda to throw strikes consistently early in the game,” said Head Coach Steve Zajac. “After Lyman Hall took the lead in the third, I was pleased with how our team responded. The bottom of the order was big for us in the fourth. Mary Evans, Jillian Batick, and Charlotte Young all reached base and scored to get us back the lead. Once we got the lead back, Amanda took it to another level, getting nine of the next 11 hitters out to put up three scoreless innings.”

The following day, King and Signore joined forces to toss a combined no-hitter in a 13-0 shutout versus Career. King struck out seven in four innings and earned the victory. Leah Kornguth paced the Guilford offense by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Emily Torre got the scoring going for Guilford with a long three-run home run to left-center field in the bottom of the first. Evans went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Olivia Meade got her first career varsity hit.

“The team played a complete game today. I was very proud of them,” said Zajac. “Defensively, no errors. The pitchers gave up no hits and only a walk, and we hit the ball solidly all game. Emily Torre gave us a big lift in the first inning with her homer to get us on the board. It was also nice to see Leah get her bat going today with the three hits.”

Baseball

Guilford played three divisional games to begin its Oronoque Division schedule last week, losing two out of three to sit at 5-4 overall.

The Indians dropped their SCC Oronoque Division opener by a 3-2 final against Fairfield Prep on April 17. Guilford then lost a 5-0 decision to Shelton in another divisional game the next day. However, the Indians ended the week on a high note by notching a 9-3 win over Cross on April 20.

Taking on Fairfield Prep, Gray Stephens tied the game for Guilford with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh, before the Jesuits won the game on a walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning.

Against Shelton, Guilford’s pitching issued eight walks, while the offense was only able to muster two hits.

In the Cross victory, Matt McGrath pitched six strong innings to get the win for the Indians. John Luke Cianciolo hit a solo home run, and Stephens had two hits and an RBI.

“We faced an excellent pitcher today, and we were able to string some quality at-bats together and get some runs,” said Head Coach Brian Hayden. “I thought Matt threw the ball really well for us, despite us not playing great defense. Matt never losses his composure on the mound and that was very important for us today, because we kept putting him in tough spots and he was able to get out of trouble. John Luke Cianciolo has some good at-bats today, including a solo home run. Gray Stephens is also swinging the bat really well.”
