The Westbrook girls’ tennis team continued its hot start to the season by piecing together another undefeated week and is sitting pretty with a record of 5-0 this spring.
On April 9, the Knights hosted Old Saybrook and took all three doubles matches on their way to a 5-2 victory. In singles play, Sara Farnoli won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot, while Victoria Koplas took the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-2. Sarah Davey and Merry Farrell competed at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions, respectively. For doubles, Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1, Lexie Vumback and Alyssa Esposito won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, while Juliana Fabrizi and Olivia Archer prevailed 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 duel.
On April 11, Westbrook was at East Hampton and pulled off a 7-0 sweep against the Bellringers. On the singles side, Farnoli (6-1, 6-4), Davey (6-4, 6-1) Koplas (6-1, 6-1), and Farrell (6-2, 6-2) all won their singles matches for the Knights. In doubles action, Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while the teams of Vumback and Esposito, and Juliana Fabrizi and Archer both won by default.
Two days later, the Knights hosted Haddam-Killingworth and defended their home court by netting a 4-3 win. H-K took three of the four singles matchups with Koplas securing a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 for Westbrook, while Farnoli, Davey, and Ferrell all took defeats. However, Westbrook swept the doubles matches behind wins from Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi (6-1, 6-2), Vumback and Esposito (6-1, 6-0), plus Archer and Juliana Fabrizi, who took the No. 3 match in dramatic fashion by the final score of 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) to solidify the victory.
Boys’ Tennis
The Knights grabbed two wins in last week’s matches to move to 3-2 on the season. Westbrook picked up wins against Haddam-Killingworth and East Hampton, and also lost to Old Saybrook.
On April 9, Westbrook took 6-1 defeat versus Old Saybrook. Two days later, the Knights turned it around against East Hampton by squeaking out a 4-3 win. Finally, on April 13, Westbrook swept H-K by a 7-0 final.
Baseball
Westbrook played three games last week and came away with a victory versus Coginchaug to move to 2-3 this year.
On April 9, Westbrook was at North Branford and lost a pitcher’s duel by the score of 1-0. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning, when North Branford plated the winning run. Cameron Marshall pitched 6.2 innings for Westbrook, striking out five and only allowing three hits. Connor Cruz had a two hits, while Daniel Perreault and David McCain each had a hit.
Two days later, the Knights hosted Coginchaug and won a low-scoring contest, 2-1. Cruz was on the mound and allowed just one hit with 10 strikeouts through 6.2 innings, before handing the ball to Jack Hayes for the final out of the game. Westbrook put its first run on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-out RBI double by Perreault that scored Kyle Robison from second base. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Knights got some insurance when McCain doubled and Robison drove him in with a single. McCain was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, and Cruz also had a hit for Westbrook. Robison had a hit, scored a run, and drove in run, while Perreault had the RBI double.
On April 13, the Knights were at home to face Old Saybrook and lost 14-3. Old Saybrook put up 11 runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back on its way to the win.
Softball
Westbrook notched a win in last week’s slate of games and now has a record of 2-3 on the season.
In their first matchup, the Knights were on the road to face Portland, and their offense exploded for a 15-7 victory on April 10. The next day, Westbrook was at home for North Branford and took a 17-0 defeat. Playing its third game in as many days, the Knights lost at Valley Regional by a 15-0 final on April 12.
