The Valley Regional softball team swept its slate of four games this past week, while improving its record to 5-0 on the year. The Warriors notched wins against Haddam-Killingworth, Morgan, Westbrook, and Somers in last week’s matchups.
On April 9, the Warriors were at Haddam-Killingworth, where they won 3-0 by scoring single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings. Addy Bullis pitched a complete game shutout, while striking out 10 batters and only relinquishing two hits for Valley. Lexi Ross went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and a walk. Rylee DaRe caught the bulk of Bullis’s gem, after which Carlee Kirla came in to play catcher in the fifth inning.
Two days later, Valley headed to Morgan and won a lopsided contest by the score of 18-5 in five innings. The Warriors piled up the runs by scoring three in the first and seven more in the third on their way to the 13-run victory. Alex Figuenick was 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, four RBI, and two runs; Abby Cunningham went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and a walk; and Bullis was on the mound again for the Warriors, who saw DaRe and Kirla share the catching duties.
The next day, the Warriors hosted Westbrook and prevailed 15-0 in five innings. Valley scored nine runs in the first two innings and cruised to victory with Bullis on the mound. The sophomore pitcher recorded another shutout by striking out 13 and allowing only two hits in five innings pitched. Bullis helped her own case at the plate going 1-for-3 with two RBI, two runs, and a walk, DaRe went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk.
Finally, on April 14, Valley had a game at Somers and won 9-2. Once again, Bullis was dominant on the mound by pitching a complete game with 14 Ks. She also went 3-for-3 at the dish with a double and two runs. Lauren Allen went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and two runs scored, and Abby Cunningham added a double.
Baseball
The Warriors came away with one win in their three games last week and are now 3-2 on the season. On April 9, the Warriors hosted Old Saybrook and took an 8-5 loss. Jacob Robertson had hit, and RBI, and a run scored; Josh Ross was 2-for-2 with two walks; and Chase Morris had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
Two days later, Valley was at Cromwell and lost 5-1. Sam Swap grabbed two hits in the game, Ross had two walks and an RBI, while Morris, Garhett Watrous, Robertson, and Zach Stevens all had one hit.
Then on April 14, the Warriors were at Ledyard and took home an exciting 4-3 win in extra innings. Valley went up 2-0 in the second, but the Colonels tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. Valley responded with a run to go up 3-2 in the top of the sixth, after which Ledyard struck back in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up again. After a scoreless seventh, the Warriors put a run across the plate in the top of the eighth inning and hung on for the victory.
Girls’ Tennis
The Warriors had four matches last week and secured wins in three of them to improve to 3-2 this year.
On April 9, Valley was at North Branford and won a close match, 4-3. In singles play, Jessica Weinstein took the Warriors’ lone singles victory (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 4 position. Emma Hunt-Bauman, Myah Martinez, and Tori Adamczyk competed at the top three singles spots for Valley. The Warriors swept the doubles matches to get the win with Ellen Flynn and Caroline Baldwin winning 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, Allie Champion and Ada Ramos prevailing 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot, and winning Jill deJongh and Alex Halsey winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Two days later, Valley dropped a 4-3 home match against Cromwell. Valley received a singles victory from Hunt-Bauman (6-4, 3-6, 6-0) in the defeat. In doubles, Flynn and Baldwin (6-0, 6-0), and Champion and Ramos (6-4, 6-2) scored wins for the Warriors.
The next day, Valley hosted Haddam-Killingworth and won 4-3. Adamczyk (6-2, 6-0) and Weinstein grabbed wins in singles play. In doubles, the teams of Flynn and Baldwin (6-1, 6-0), and Champion and Ramos (6-2, 6-2) provided victories for the Warriors.
Finally, on April 14, Valley was at home to face Old Saybrook and won another 4-3 match. In singles play, Weinstein won 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot, and Taylor Harpin won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. Hunt-Bauman and Martinez also played singles for Valley. As for doubles, Flynn and Baldwin won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot, and Champion and Ramos won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. DeJongh and Halsey competed at the No. 3 spot.
Boys’ Tennis
Valley had three matches last week and won all three of them to stand at 3-2 on the season.
On April 9, the Warriors posted a 6-0 home victory against North Branford. Two days later, Valley grabbed a 4-3 win over Cromwell on the road. The next day, The Warriors earned another road victory with a 6-0 win against Haddam-Killingworth.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Warriors won two of their three games last week and have a 2-2 record through their first four games.
On April 9, Valley was at home against Haddam-Killingworth and won 11-6. Sean Cole provided two goals and four assists, while Cam Frazier had four goals to go with one assist. Rick Persico had a goal and an assist, and Finn Miller and Soren Frantz each scored two goals. Dylan LaPlace was in the net and made nine saves.
The next day, the Warriors took an 8-4 defeat at Morgan. Two days later, Head Coach George Hudson’s squad was back at home and beat Cromwell 12-5. Cole had four goals and three assists on the day, while Miller added three goals and a helper. Persico supplied two goals and an assist, Cam Frazier had two goals, Frantz had one goal, and Bill Burch added an assist in the victory.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Warriors had two contests last week and earned a split to move to 1-3 on the season.
On April 9, Valley was on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and picked up its first win of the season with an 18-3 victory over the Cougars. On April 12, Valley hit the road again to play Old Lyme and lost 14-11.
Crew
Valley crew had its first regatta of the season at Lake Cochichewick, Massachusetts on April 7. Head Coach John Laundon’s squad persevered despite challenging conditions while facing off against opponents Brooks School, Dexter Southfield, and Duxbury Bay.
The boys’ first boat placed second with a time of 6:55. For the girls, the first boat came in fourth with a time of 6:17, the second boat placed fourth with a time of 7:13, the third boat finished second with a time of 7:17, the fourth boat placed second at 7:39, and the fifth boat came in third with a time of 8:47.
