The Morgan girls’ outdoor track team swept tri-meet against two Shoreline Conference opponents last week. The Huskies earned wins versus both North Branford and Coginchaug at the meet, which was held at the Peters Complex on April 11.
Kate Daley finished in first place in the 3,200-meter run with a new personal-record time of 11:18 for the Huskies. Daley was also part of the 4x800 relay including Allie Gardner, Issy Ranaudo, and Maura Kelly that placed first with a time of 10:45. The 4x400 relay of Ranaudo, Mikayla Mancini, Gardner, and Kelly grabbed first place at 4:30.15.
Several other Huskies finished first in their events, including Gardner in the 800 (2:45.77), Alyssa LeMay in the 200 (27.85), Mancini in the high jump (4-6) and triple jump (32-10), plus Sam Mena in the javelin (78-6) and discus (75). LeMay also nabbed second place in the long jump at 14-11.
Jenna Scanlon placed second in discus at 64-6, and Charlotte Davenport was second in triple jump with a leap of 28-8.5. Sydney Church took second place in both the 110 hurdles (18.86) and the 300 hurdles (57.22), Taylor Wyatt placed second in the 100 (13.55) and the 200 (28.59), and Ashley Annicelli was second in the shot put with a distance of 23-5. The 4x100 relay of Wyatt, Mancini, LeMay, and Davenport earned second at 53.43 seconds.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Huskies split a tri-meet on April 11 by defeating North Branford and losing against Coginchaug.
Morgan earned several first-place finishes on the day. Juan Avila took first in the triple jump at 39 feet-5 inches, as well as the long jump with a distance of 19-0.5. Avila was also part of the 4x100 relay that included Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Sam Hauser, and Bryce Thomas and took first with a time of 45.96 seconds. Anes Gadun grabbed first in the 110 hurdles (18.2) and second in the 300 hurdles (45.98).
Bryce Thomas clocked in at 11.67 in the 100 to take first place. Brett Martin was first in the 800 with a time of 2:29.56, and Nick Muratori placed second at 2:34.16. Chayse Lofgren was first in the 3,200 at 11:44.34. The 4x800 relay of Thomas Southwood, Lofgren, Hauser, and Martin finished first with a time of 9:17. Mucha took home second place in the 1,600 at 5:23.
Baseball
The Morgan baseball team played four games in last week’s action and split the set to stand at 2-4 this year.
On April 9, the Huskies picked up their first win with new Head Coach Michael Grant when they beat Portland 8-5 on the road. Sophomore pitcher Kyle Suraci grabbed the win on the mound going by five innings and allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out eight. Morgan got some help from the bullpen as Mike Zingarella and senior captain Nick Caprio came on in relief. Caprio recorded the last out to earn the save.
Portland got on the board first, but Morgan rallied back to take the lead and then applied the final touches with a three-run sixth inning that included key hits by Kyle Burt, Trevor Follo, and Caprio. Suraci homered for the Huskies, while Jack O’Sullivan and freshman Ryan Egan recorded multi-hit games.
Two days later, Morgan’s bats stayed hot when the team posted a 15-3 home victory over East Hampton. AJ Fritz led the way with three hits, while Follo, O’Sullivan, Burt, and Mike Manacho all had multiple hits. Suraci had two hits, including a double and a three-run homer, in the victory. Egan earned the win on the bump, allowing two hits over four innings with 4 Ks without giving up a run. Cameron Carlson closed out the game for Morgan.
On April 13, the Huskies lost a 9-2 home contest against Guilford. The the next day, Morgan took an 11-1 home loss against Cromwell at the Indian River Complex.
Softball
The Huskies dropped three games last week to move to 0-5 this year. On April 11, Morgan lost 18-5 against Valley Regional. The next day, the Huskies took a 18-10 defeat against Cromwell. Two days later, Morgan lost to Old Saybrook 5-2.
Boys’ Tennis
The Huskies won their two matches last week as Head Coach Chris Zawadski’s squad moved to 4-0 on the season.
On April 9, Morgan squared off with Haddam-Killingworth on the road and won 7-0. In singles play, Matt Newfield won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, while Patrick Markovics won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 position, Garrett Johnson took the win, 6-1, 6-0, and JP Nye won the No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-0. Logan Cummings won at the No. 5 spot by default, as did the doubles teams of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo, and Sean Arribas Cockley and Drew Marzano.
On April 11, the Huskies hosted Old Lyme and squeaked out a 4-3 victory. Newfield won a long match by the final score 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot, and Johnson secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 position. Markovicz, Vincent Tino, and JP Nye competed at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 positions, respectively. On the doubles side, Murray and Nuzzo won 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 position, and Cockley and Marzano prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Girls’ Tennis
Morgan had a full slate last week by playing four matches and picked up its first victory of the year.
On April 9, Morgan lost to Haddam-Killingworth at home, 5-2. For the singles matches, competing for Morgan were Yashveen Rai at the No. 1 spot, Becca Walton at No. 2, Bea Atengco at No. 3, and Ava Araujo at No. 4. In doubles play, the duo of Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, and Grace Hull and Becca Cockley were victorious at the No. 2 spot (5-7, 6-1, 7-5). Ingrid Rodriguez and Sydney Fratamico competed at the No. 3 position.
Two days later, the Huskies took a 6-1 home loss to Old Lyme. Morgan’s lone victory came from Aruaja (7-6, 3-6, 6-2) in the No. 4 singles match.
On April 13, North Branford was in town and defeated the Huskies 5-2. North Branford swept the singles matches, while Morgan received victories from the teams of Andrews and Cummings, plus Rodriguez and Fratamico.
The next day, Morgan grabbed its first win by prevailing 6-1 at East Hampton/Hale-Ray. In singles play, Bea Atengco (6-0, 6-0) and Ava Araujo (6-2, 6-1) won the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Taylor Gregory won by forfeit at No 4, and Walton competed at the No. 1 position for the Huskies. As for doubles, Andrews and Cummings (6-0, 6-0) won at the No. 1 spot, while Hull and Cockley prevailed at the No. 2 position, and Rodriguez and Fratamico won by forfeit at No. 3.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Morgan had just one game last week when it played at Haddam-Killingworth on April 12. Head Coach William Lindsay’s team snagged an 11-8 win to improve to 2-3 on the season.
With the game tied 5-5 entering the second half, the Huskies doubled up H-K, 6-3, en route to the 11-8 final. Morgan outshot the Cougars 24-21 in the win. Madison Seeger had a big game with five goals, Madeline Stopkoski tallied two goals with an assist, while Emily Davis had a goal and two helpers. Robyn Vuikkeumier, Georgia Nye, and Erin Lindsay scored one goal apiece, and Cassidy Shepard made 15 saves in goal for the Huskies. Olivia McCray had five draw controls, Lindsay had three ground ball controls, while Davis, Stopkoski, and Nye were each credited with two ground ball controls.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Huskies notched victories in two of their three games last week and stand at 3-2 on the campaign.
On April 10, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and won 8-4. Two days later, the Huskies had another home game against Haddam-Killingworth and notched a 14-8 victory. Then on April 14, Morgan took at 11-6 loss at home against Bacon Academy.
Golf
The Huskies notched two victories and took two losses to start the year at 2-2.
On April 10, Morgan hosted Coginchaug at the Clinton Country Club and dropped a 176-183 decision. The next day, the Huskies hosted a tri-match and scored a 174 to defeat both North Branford (199) and North Haven (211). On April 12, Morgan headed to the Black Hall Club to face Old Lyme and lost 171-197.
