The North Haven baseball team continued its red-hot start to the 2018 season by rattling off three more victories last week. The Indians defeated Cheshire (1-0), Sheehan (9-3), and Barlow (8-1) to improve to 5-1 with a five-game win streak intact.

North Haven opened up the week with a home game against Cheshire and defeated the Rams 1-0 at DeMayo Ballfield on April 9. North Haven scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the first inning, when Andrew Laudano reached on an error, took second base on fellow senior Peyton Farina’s sacrifice bunt, went to third on a single by senior Steven Erbe, and then came home on a wild pitch. Junior Ben Sbabo earned his first varsity win by allowing two hits and one walk in 3.1 scoreless innings. Senior Luca Lawrence got the save by tossing 3.2 scoreless innings in which he allowed one hit and a walk.

Two days later, the Indians hit the road to face Sheehan and claimed a 9-3 victory. North Haven scored three runs in the second inning, two more in the second, and cruised from there. Zach Pincince picked up his second win by allowing one unearned run on three hits and no walks with six strikeouts in four innings pitched. Fellow senior Chris Ciarleglio gave up one hit and a walk in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

At the plate, sophomore Dave Christoforo went 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, two runs, and a RBI; senior Kevin Lucey was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, a run scored, two RBI, and a stolen base; and Farina singled and walked with a run and a stolen base for North Haven. Sophomore Matt DeRosa doubled with a run and a RBI; Erbe singled, scored a run, and drove in a run; senior Nick Perillie drew a walk, scored a run, drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and stole a base; and junior Hunter Garthwait hit a pair of sacrifice flies in the blowout.

North Haven wrapped up the week by posting an 8-1 home win over Barlow in a non-conference game on April 14. The Indians led 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, when they scored four runs for some insurance. North Haven later tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning. Sbabo got the start and allowed one run in 2.1 innings, after which Lawrence threw four perfect innings with six strikeouts for his second win. Senior Nate Zalegowski retired the last two batters to seal the victory.

For the offense, Farina had a nice all-around game as he singled, drew two walks, scored two runs, drove in a run, and had a stolen base. Perillie hit an RBI double and scored a run, while junior Gianni DiMartino doubled and stole a base. Lucey had an RBI with a run scored and a stolen base, and DeRosa walked, scored a run, and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for North Haven.

North Haven was victorious in two of its three of its games last week to run its record to 3-2 on the season. The Indians squeaked out an extra-inning win over Sacred Heart Academy, won big against Foran, and then took a one-run loss versus Law.

North Haven opened the week by rallying for a 3-2 win in nine innings against Sacred Heart Academy at Albertus Magnus College on April 11. The next day, North Haven squared off against Foran at Jonathan Law High School and prevailed 10-1. On April 14, the Indians hosted Law and lost by the final score of 4-3.

North Haven improved to 4-0 by sweeping a tri-meet against Branford and Platt Tech at Vanacore Field on April 10. The Indians posted a 124-6 win over non-conference opponent Platt Tech and claimed an 82-68 victory versus Oronoque Division opponent to move to 2-0 in the division.

Ethan Okwuosa continued the great start to his sophomore season by recording four victories to help the Indians get the sweep. Okwuosa won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.4 seconds and took first place in the 200 behind a time of 24.4 seconds. He also won the long jump with a distance of 19 feet-3.25 inches, as well as the high jump by clearing 5 feet-6 inches.

North Haven saw several other athletes take first place at the meet. Corey Reilly won the 1,600 (5:03.3), fellow senior Joe DePrimo was first for the shot put (43.8), senior Eric Milliard prevailed in the discus (99-7), Eric Spignesi won the pole vault (10-6), and fellow junior Chris Moran finished first in the triple jump (35-9). The Indians’ 4x100 relay of junior Jacob Wurm, senior Matthew Biehl, sophomore Jeff Williston, and junior John Crispi finished first with a time of 48.4 seconds.

The Indians began their season by recording a 109-41 victory at Oronoque Division opponent Branford on April 9.

Senior Giselle Zumerchik took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.9 seconds, in addition to winning the 300 hurdles in 56.1 seconds. Junior Erica Marriott prevailed in the 200-meter dash in 26.6 seconds to go with a win in the long jump at 16 feet-7.5 inches. Sophomore Reagan Forbes won the 1,600 (6:15) and 3,200 (14:10) to help North Haven defeat the Hornets.

The Indians’ other first-place finishers were Ashley Brown in the 100 (13.5), fellow senior Macey DiCarlo in the 800 (2:54), senior Kyla DelVecchio in the javelin (103-7), Courtney McFarland in the shot put (27-8), fellow sophomore Kisa Courville in the discus (66-4), Julia Mappa for the high jump (4-8), and fellow junior Camille Sahirul in the triple jump (32-1). North Haven’s 4x800 relay of sophomore Cecile Tobin, DiCarlo, junior Jackie Howlett, and sophomore Raven Tebbetts took first place (12:11), while the Indians’ 4x400 of Brown, DiCarlo, junior Sarina Sandwell, and Marriott finished first in 4:34.50.

North Haven came away with a split of two matches last week and now has a record of 2-2. The Indians lost to Cheshire and then came back to defeat Sheehan.

North Haven started the week by dropping a 5-2 decision in Cheshire on April 11. Junior Julia Migliorini notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 singles match. Senior Rachel Petry also shut out her opponent by a 6-0, 6-0 final in the No. 2 singles contest.

Two days later, the Indians hosted Sheehan and earned a 5-2 win. Migliorini (6-0, 6-0) and Petry (6-1, 6-0) prevailed at the top two singles spots for North Haven. Junior Lily Mezzi earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 singles match, while sophomore Anna Wootton prevailed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. On the doubles court, the Indians’ No. 1 duo of senior Katrina Nadolny and sophomore Kara Stevens captured a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory; the No. 2 team of senior Avery Hill and junior Zoe Bowerman won 6-0, 6-0; and the No. 3 tandem of juniors Jessica Tran and Daniella Bryson earned a 6-1, 6-2 win.

The Indians took a pair of defeats to begin their season last week. North Haven took a 7-0 home loss against Branford on April 11 and then lost at Xavier by that same score the next day.

The Indians split a pair of recent matchups to stand with a record of 5-1 this spring. North Haven lost to Cheshire, but then bounced back by defeating Avon last week.

North Haven hosted Cheshire on April 9 and took an 11-4 defeat against the Rams. Senior Zack Orth scored two goals for the Indians, and freshman Kasey Mongillo added a goal in the defeat.

Four days later, the Indians had a non-conference game at Avon and prevailed by a 10-9 final.

North Haven played three games last week and came away with one win to move to 1-3 on the season. The Indians defeated Lyman Hall, before losing to Amity in last week’s action.

On April 10, North Haven put its first win in the books by notching a 15-9 victory at Lyman Hall. Sophomore Madison Fredericks and senior Courtney Babbidge both netted three goals to lead the Indians to the victory, while Molly Scarpa, fellow junior Annie Uyeki, senior Kylie Brandt, and junior Jill Rowland all scored two goals apiece. Sophomore Christina D’Angelo added a goal for North Haven, which saw sophomore goalie Kyla Kennealy make seven saves in net.

Then on April 13, North Haven hosted Amity and dropped a 13-12 decision versus the Spartans.

The following afternoon, the Indians traveled to Ledyard for a non-conference contest and took a 10-6 defeat.

North Haven had a tri-match against two teams from the Shoreline Conference when the Indians faced Morgan and North Branford at Clinton Country Club on April 11. North Haven took a 174-211 loss against the host Huskies and dropped 199-211 decision versus North Branford for a record of 0-3 on the year.
