Hand Outdoor Track Opens Season with Home Meet; Softball Goes to 5-0 After Sweeping Week

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Hand boys’ outdoor track team started its year with a tri-meet sweep of rival Guilford and Career last week. On April 10, the Tigers defeated both Guilford (105-45) and Career (144-6) at home to start the dual-meet year with a record of 2-0.

After going 10-0 for the regular season and claiming the SCC Championship title in 2017, Hand finished second to Middletown at the Class L State Championship last spring. One week later, the Tigers claimed their first State Open crown by scoring 32 points to squeak past runner-up Danbury, which scored 30 points.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Tigers squared off against Guilford in their dual-meet opener last week. Hand hosted Guilford on April 10 and lost a 90-56 decision against the Indians.

In 2017, the Tigers finished as the runner-up at the SCC Championship, before notching a third-place showing at the Class L State Championship. Hand then finished fifth at the State Open.

Softball

The Tigers had a busy, but productive week by recording three wins in as many days to improve to 5-0 on the campaign.

Hand first defeated East Lyme 9-1 for a non-conference win on April 9. The Tigers then doubled up Mercy by an 8-4 score the next day. After that, Hand moved to 5-0 with another 8-4 victory, this time against Foran, the next day.

Boys’ Volleyball

Hand took its first loss of the year last week, but is still a strong 3-1 on the season.

The Tigers defeated Norwich Free Academy by a 3-1 score on April 9. Hand then beat Wolcott Tech by the same final on April 11. The Tigers then lost a 3-2 decision against Barlow on April 13.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Hand stands at 3-0 after recording a win against Amity in its lone game last week.

The Tigers raced past Amity by an 11-2 final on April 9. Jack Flanagan had six goals, while Tom Swank added a pair of goals with two assists in the victory. Nate Palumbo finished with a goal and two helpers, Tom Ferrick had a goal and an assist, Adam Hendrick added a goal, and Tripp Bordiere assisted on a score for Hand. Griffin Fitzmaurice made six saves in net as the Tigers outshot the Spartans 41-14.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Tigers are now 4-2 after posting victories over Amity and Simsbury.

Hand started the week with a 15-4 triumph over Amity on April 10. The Tigers then took a 15-12 loss to Greenwich on April 12, but closed its week with a 16-3 rout of Simsbury two days later.

Boys’ Tennis

Hand had just one match last week and came up with a convincing win to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers earned a 7-0 sweep of Amity on April 11 for their second victory in as many contests this spring.

Girls’ Tennis

Hand won its lone match of the week to move to 2-0 this year.

The Tigers swept Lauralton Hall 7-0 on April 9. Hand’s wins in singles competition came from Sam Riordan, Lindsay Riordan, Annie Barrett, and Ellie Weinstein. Doubles victories were delivered by the teams of Lee Jiaen and Anna Lang, Nell Karas and Nicki Goldfeder, and Jennie Burris and Clare Nelson.

Boys’ Golf

The Tigers are now 2-1 overall after splitting two matches on the links last week. Hand took a 170-178 defeat to Hamden on April 9, before defeating Amity 156-188 on April 11.

Against Hamden, Connor Quinn led Hand with a score of 41, and Matt Doyle followed with a 42.

Facing Amity, Doyle shot a one-under-par 34, while Quinn added a 38. Aidan Stuart and Michael McKeon posted a score of 42 for the Tigers.
