East Haven Baseball Grabs a Few Gutsy Victories; Boys’ Tennis Also Takes Two

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team won two of its three games last week to improve its record to 4-2 on the season. The Yellowjackets lost to Hamden, but then bounced back to get an extra-inning victory versus Law and that was followed by a win against West Haven.

The Easties started off last week with a home game against Hamden on April 9 and took a 6-3 defeat. East Haven’s offense scattered eight hits throughout the contest with Nate Furino and Gabe Longley picking up two hits apiece.

On April 11, East Haven visited Law claimed a 9-6 victory in a game that lasted 10 innings. Furino started the game on the mound and pitched 6.1 strong innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven. Sal Buffone earned the victory by tossing three scoreless innings of relief in which he struck out five. Offensively, Frank Camera had three hits and three RBI, Furino had two hits, a RBI, and two runs scored; Luis Vega had two hits and two RBI, and Steven Mingione had three hits and two RBI for East Haven.

The very next day, the Yellowjackets visited West Haven and prevailed 7-4. East Haven took advantage of eight errors committed by the Blue Devils in the victory. Junior Jack Kabel tossed a complete game on the hill, while striking out seven. Spano finished the game with a pair of hits and four RBI.

Softball

The Yellowjackets lost three of four last week for a record of 3-3 on the season.

East Haven was held to two hits when it took an 8-0 loss against North Branford on April 9. Julia SanGiovanni had a double in the loss.

On April 11, Cheshire outlasted East Haven for an 8-6 victory. Jessica Stettinger had a home run and four RBI, while Selena Mauro and Jillian Hay each had a RBI for the Yellowjackets.

East Haven then took a 14-9 loss against Amity on April 12, before closing the week with a 9-1 victory versus Branford on April 13.

Boys’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets won their first two matches of the year to improve to 2-1 this season. East Haven posted victories over Wilcox Tech and Platt Tech in last week’s contests.

On April 12, East Haven defeated Wilcox Tech by a 6-1 count. The Easties swept singles play as Rob Scalesse won 6-2, 6-3; Anthony Pettola won 6-1, 6-1; Nick Kluth won 6-2, 6-3; and Marchello Delucia prevailed 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Seth Proto and Doug Comesanas won 6-2, 6-2; and Joe Brown and Dan Murtagh earned a 7-6, 6-4 victory. Oliver Gonzalez and John Vitali took a 1-6, 7-5, 12-10 defeat in a marathon doubles match.

East Haven stood strong with a 7-0 win over Platt Tech the following day. The contest featured a different format with five singles matches and a pair of doubles matches. Scalesse, Pettola, and Luke Delgride all won 8-2, while Kluth and Delucia both won 8-4 on the singles court. In doubles, Proto and Comesanas won 8-2, and Brown and Murtagh claimed an 8-0 win.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven is 1-2 this year after taking a pair of recent defeats.

On April 9, Foran topped the Yellowjackets by a 7-0 score. In singles, Jenna Pane lost 6-1, 6-1; Autumn Hernandez lost 6-0, 6-1; Nhi Trinh lost 6-0, 6-0; and Jade Roberts took a 6-0, 6-1 defeat. In doubles action, Emma Luden and Riya Patel lost 6-2, 6-1; Sophia Angueira and Kelly Wysocki lost 6-0, 6-2; and Brianna Green and Carolyn Miller dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision.

East Haven then lost 5-2 to West Haven on April 11. The Yellowjackets’ No. 2 doubles team of Angueira and Wysocki won 6-4, 4-6, 6-0; while the No. 3 duo of Gianna Clemente and Miller won by a score of 6-2, 6-3. In other action, Luden and Patel lost 6-4, 6-3; Pane lost 6-1, 6-0; Hernandez took a 6-0, 6-2 defeat; Trinh lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-4; and Roberts dropped a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 decision.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets have started the year at 1-3 following their first two meets of the season.

On April 8, East Haven played host to Hamden and Branford. The team came away with a 77-64 win over Hamden and lost to Branford 81-69. Thrower Calvin Nelson had the best day of any Yellowjacket has he won the shot put with a toss of 35 feet-2.5 inches and the discus with a throw of 103 feet. Jordan Ingram was victorious in the 100 with a time of 11.3 seconds, while Radames Figueroa won the 110-meter hurdles at 17.9 seconds.

The Yellowjackets were then swept in a home meet on April 11 as Sheehan bested East Haven 101-49 and Cross recorded an 80-70 victory against the Easties. Jay Donaldson came away with a pair of individual wins as he won the 100 at 10.9 and the 200 in 22.5. Figueroa took first in the 300 hurdles at 44.87, while the 4x100 relay team of Donaldson, Ingram, Tom Meyerholz, and Mike Castellano was victorious with a time of 45.6 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

East Haven is 0-3 early on this year after taking defeats in their opening two meets of the campaign.

On April 8, Branford defeated the Yellowjackets 79-69. Freshman Kisha Francois won three individual events as she was victorious in the 100 with a time of 13.4 seconds, the 200 at 28.4, and the long jump at 16 feet-3 inches. Haley Montesanto won the 100-meter hurdles in 18.0 and the 300-meter hurdles at 51.9. Molly Mazzucco won the high jump at 4-foot-10 and Isabella Ragaini won the javelin with a throw of 98 feet-2 inches. The 4x100 relay team of Ally Borque, Montesanto, Paige Maffeo, and Francois was also victorious at 53.4 seconds.

East Haven then hosted a tri-meet on April 11 and took defeats against Cross (95-42) and Sheehan (93-49). Francois won the 100 with a time of 12.5, the 200 at 27.4, and the long jump at 16 feet-7.5 inches. Montesanto was victorious in the 300 hurdles at 51.5, and Mazzucco had the best height in the high jump at 4 feet-8 inches. The 4x100 relay team of Natalia Gentile, Montesanto, Maffeo, and Francois finished first in 51.7 seconds.

Golf

East Haven opened up its season by splitting a pair of matchups last week.

On April 10, the Yellowjackets were the road team against Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Course won 202-222. The following afternoon, the Easties hosted Foran at Alling and lost by the final score of 194-207.
