Both Haddam-Killingworth Track Teams Start Spring 3-0; Baseball Stays Perfect

Boys’ and Girls’ Outdoor Track

On April 10, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams opened their dual-meet seasons when they competed in quad-meets against Hale-Ray, Westbrook, and host East Hampton. Both teams came away with three victories the boys defeated Westbrook (111-28), Hale-Ray (129-10), and East Hampton (107-43) to start their season at 3-0. The H-K girls’ team also went 3-0 by earning wins against Westbrook (97-52), Hale Ray (129-19), and East Hampton (97-51).

Leading the way for boys’ team were individual event winners in Luke Sodergren for the 110 (17.9 seconds) and 300 hurdles (47.7), Andrew Meredith for the 1,600 (4:54), Colin Regan in the 400 (55.4), Christian Uzwiak in the 3,200 (11:13), Dalton Brown for the long jump (19-1), Dalton Modehn in the triple jump (36-1), and Colton Lavioe for the discus (127-4). The boys’ 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relays were also victorious.

Earning first-place finishes for the girls were Veronica Chrzanowski in the 100 (13.4), 200 (28.8), and long jump (15-10); Autumn Coady in the 100 (17.7) and 300 hurdles (52.3), Kelsey D’Amico in the 3,200 (12:09), and Ashley Duncanson for the 400 (64.9). The team’s 4x800 and 4x400 relays were also victorious on the afternoon.

Baseball

Haddam-Killingworth is now a perfect 5-0 after reeling off two more wins last week.

The Cougars edged out Portland 3-2 in eight innings on April 11. Trevor Rydel drove in Alec Erskine for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth by doubling to the fence with one out. Ben Alonzo and Darren Hiller each had three hits to help the Cougars get their fourth win. Owen Marica earned his third victory of the year with a solid outing in relief.

The Cougars went on to defeat Windsor Locks 15-5 on April 14. Hiller had four hits and scored three runs, while Ross Meglin chipped in with three hits and three RBI to lead the Cougars. Marica and Jon Civiello each had three base knocks in the 18-hit H-K attack.

Softball

The Cougars are now 2-1 after splitting a pair of Shoreline Conference showdowns last week.

H-K took a 3-0 defeat to Valley Regional on April 9. H-K got a double from Rachel Mauri and a single from Olivia Whitehead in the loss.

The Cougars then bounced back with a 15-4 victory over Old Saybrook on April 12. H-K blasted nine extra-base hits with seven doubles, a triple, and a home run in the victory. Faith Torello picked up the win on the mound by striking out nine over six innings. She also helped her own cause with two hits and three RBI at the dish. Whitehead had three hits with a double and two runs scored, plus Ali Halligan hit a solo home run for the Cougars.

Golf

H-K is off to a 1-0 start to the season after squeaking by North Branford in its opening match.

The Cougars started their year with a 200-204 triumph over North Branford on April 10. Oliver Artus led the Cougars by shooting a 45, which was good for medalist honors as the low scorer at the meet. Andrew Kuehn and Ethan Campbell both scored a 50, and Greg Lynskey had a score of 55 for H-K.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Cougars nabbed their first victory of the season this past week and are now 1-3 on the season.

H-K took an 11-6 loss to Valley Regional on April 9. The Cougars next lost a 14-8 decision against Morgan on April 12. The following day, H-K knocked off North Branford by the final score of 11-6.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K is 0-4 this spring after losing three contests last week.

The Cougars took an 18-3 defeat against Valley Regional on April 9. H-K then took a 16-2 loss to North Branford the next day. On April 12, the Cougars dropped an 11-8 decision versus Morgan.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K grabbed its first win of the spring last week and is now 1-4 on the year.

The Cougars defeated Morgan by the score of 5-2 on April 9. H-K was then edged by Coginchaug, 4-3, on April 11. The Cougars lost by the same score to Valley Regional the next day and concluded the week with a 4-3 loss to Westbrook on April 13.

Boys’ Tennis

H-K has a record of 1-4 after losing four matches last week.

First, H-K took a 7-0 loss to Morgan on April 9. The Cougars then lost by that same final against Coginchaug on April 11. H-K later lost a 6-0 match to Valley Regional on April 12, and then took a 7-0 loss to Westbrook on April 13.
