Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team played two recent games to kick off the spring season and split the pair for a record of 1-1 in the early stages of the campaign.

On March 31, the Knights hosted Griswold and rallied for an exciting 9-8 victory in walk-off fashion. Westbrook was down 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning, when senior Jake Marcinec hit a three-home run to give the Knights the win. Cameron Marshall and Daniel Perreault had reached base to set up Marcinec’s blast.

Griswold held an 8-1 lead when Westbrook started clawing back by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. First, Perreault socked a double to center that scored Kyle Robison, David McCain, and Marshall, who had reached base on an error, a walk, and a walk, respectively. Later in the inning, Connor Cruz picked up an RBI when he worked a walk with the bases loaded to make it 8-6. The sixth inning set the stage for the dramatic seventh as Marshall reached base on line-drive double, and then Perreault singled to put two ducks on the pond, before Marcinec won it by going yard.

Perreault finished the day with three hits, three RBI, and two runs; Marshall had two hits, two runs, and an RBI; and Jack Hayes had two hits, a run, an RBI for the Knights. Hayes also picked up the win on the mound by pitching the seventh inning and striking out two.

On April 5, the Knights headed to Cromwell and dropped an 8-3 contest. Hayes went 2-for-3 with a RBI, Marshall was 1-for-3 with three RBI, and McCain added a hit on the day.

Softball

The Knights season began their 2018 campaign by splitting a pair of contests. On April 5, Westbrook hosted Old Lyme and lost 13-1. Two days later, Westbrook had a home game against East Hampton and took a 12-6 defeat.

Boys’ Tennis

Westbrook had two matchups to start the year and came away with one win and one loss. Westbrook opened up with a home match against Ledyard and lost 7-0 on April 5. Two days later, the Knights hosted Coginchaug and turned the tables by claiming a 7-0 victory against the Blue Devils.
