Rams’ Softball Breaks Out the Bats for Two Quick Victories; Both Lacrosse Squads Win Season Openers

Softball

The Old Saybrook softball team recently opened its spring season by claiming victory in two of its first three games. The Rams defeated Plainfield and Portland, before dropping a contest against Valley Regional to get out to a 2-1 start this year.

The Rams began their campaign by posting a 22-18 home win over Plainfield on March 31. Old Saybrook trailed 8-6 entering the third inning, when the Rams exploded for nine runs to take a lead that they never relinquished. Emiley Wilson hit a two-run home run for the Rams in the win. Sarah Lombardi had two hits and five RBI, while Maeve Foley had three hits to go with four RBI and four runs scored. Sarah Howley, Carly Michaud, and Taylor Cote all had two hits apiece for Old Saybrook, which saw Carly Michaud pitch a complete game with six strikeouts.

Then on April 5, Old Saybrook blew out Portland with a 20-2 victory in five innings. Michaud struck out six to pick up the win on the mound, plus she added two singles and a double at the dish. Chloe Root was 4-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a home run, and Maeve Foley hit three singles.

Two days later, the Rams were at Valley Regional and took an 11-5 defeat. Old Saybrook led by three runs entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but Valley went up by plating five in the frame on its way to the win.

Baseball

The Rams started off their year with a game at Haddam-Killingworth and dropped a 12-7 decision. Jack Collela notched three hits on the day for Old Saybrook in the slugfest.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook got into the swing of things by winning its first game of the season, after which the Rams took three defeats to stand with an early record of 1-3.

On March 31, Old Saybrook was on the road to face Griswold in its season opener and prevailed 5-2. Alem Tiden scored two goals, while Max Chupak, Matt Barnes, and Will Peralta each had a goal on the day. Matt Murphy and Jack Adams provided one assist each apiece. Keaton Roarick was in goal for the Rams and made eight saves.

On April 3, Old Saybrook came back home to face North Branford and lost 12-4. Tiden scored all four of the Rams’ goals, and Murphy and Ian Mason each had one assist. Roarick made 18 saves in goal.

Two days later, Old Saybrook hosted Morgan and lost a low-scoring game, 2-1. The first half passed by without a goal, and each team’s first score came in the third quarter. The Huskies put one more goal on the board in the fourth for the win. Tiden netted the Rams’ goal on a helper from Ed Fernandes. Morgan put up 47 shots in the contest, and Roarick made an impressive 33 saves in the cage for Old Saybrook.

On April 7, the Rams were at Wheeler High School to face St. Bernard-Wheeler and lost a 7-0 contest.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook was on the road to face Morgan in its season opener and notched a 15-4 victory at the Indian River Complex on April 5.

Mandy Beck scored four goals, while Izzy Seigersmith and Kendall Hartt each scored three for the Rams. Allyson Kehlenbach provided two goals and two assists, plus Carrington Hartt, Kathryn Spotts, and Tristan Novakowski had one goal apiece. Julia Swett was in net for the Rams and made six saves.

Boys’ Tennis

Old Saybrook’s season got underway with a home match against Valley Regional last week. The Rams started their season on a good note by posting a 4-3 victory versus the Warriors.
