Morgan Boys’ Tennis Off to 2-0 Start; Boys’ Lacrosse Splits First Two Contests

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis squad is off to a great start this season as the Huskies were victorious in their first two matches of the campaign.

The Huskies hit the road to face Coginchaug for their first contest and won 7-0 on April 5. Matt Newfield earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 singles position, and Patrick Markovics prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Vincent Tino (6-0, 6-1), Garrett Johnson (6-0, 6-0), and James Nye (6-3, 6-2) all won at No. 3, 4, and 5 singles, respectively, for the Huskies. In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo won 6-0, 6-0, while Deven Talarczyk and Liam Whelan earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2.

Two days later, the Huskies defeated East Hampton by a 6-1 final at home. Newfield dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 1 singles, while Markovics (6-1, 6-1), Tino (6-0, 6-0), Johnson (6-0, 6-0), and Nye (6-0, 6-1) all won their singles matches for Morgan. The tandems of Murray and Nuzzo, and Miles Vogel and Whelan both won by default.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies took a 5-2 home loss against Coginchaug in their season opener.

Taylor Gregory grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 4 singles position for the Huskies, who also saw their No. 1 doubles team of Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings win a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

Also for Morgan, Rebecca Walton, Bea Atencgo, Ava Araujo competed at the top three singles positions. The tandem of Grace Hull and Rebecca Cockley played No. 2 doubles for Morgan, and Ingrid Rodriguez and Sydney Fratamico competed in the No. 3 match.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Morgan gained a split in its first two contests with new Head Coach Brendan Hylan last week.

The Huskies started their season at home against Old Lyme on April 3 and lost by the score of 6-3. The game was tied 3-3 when Old Lyme pulled ahead by scoring three goals in the fourth quarter. Senior Tony Coretti, sophomore Matt Lee, and freshman Tim Lichak each had a goal for Morgan, while Tyler Newfield provided two assists, and AJ Mastriano added a helper. Junior Matt Luchuk made 11 saves in goal.

Two days later, the Huskies won a 2-1 decision at Old Saybrook, breaking a 1-1 by netting a goal in the fourth quarter. The Huskies took 47 shots on goal in the game and received scores from Ryan Codwell on an assist from Lee, who also scored an unassisted goal. Luchak had five saves for Morgan

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Huskies played four games to get their season rolling and won one of them by defeating Somers 15-13 at home on March 31.

Sophomore Madeline Stopkoski scored three goals to go with two assists, while senior captain Madison Seeger put up three goals and an assist in the victory. Fellow senior captain Georgia Nye had two goals and two assists, as did senior captain Emily Davis and junior Erin Lindsay. Robyn Vuilleumier scored two goals, and freshman Lindsay Narracci had a goal.

Morgan put 24 shots on net, and the Spartans had 17. Sophomore goalie Cassidy Shepard was in net for the Huskies and made five saves. Defender Delaney Mastriano forced three turnovers by Somers, and junior Joelle Vuilleumier controlled five ground balls in the midfield for Morgan.

On April 3, Morgan was home to face Old Lyme and lost a 10-3 decision. Nye scored all three goals for the Huskies.

Two days later, Morgan hosted Old Saybrook and lost 15-4. Stopkoski scored two goals for Morgan, while Olivia McCray and Narracci each scored a goal.

Finally, on April 7, the Huskies headed to Guilford and took a 12-4 defeat. Morgan received goals from Robyn Vuilleumier, Stopkoski, Seeger, and McCray in the loss.

Softball

The Huskies’ season got underway with a road game against Shoreline Conference powerhouse North Branford on April 5. Morgan took a 12-0 loss in five innings versus the Thunderbirds. Seniors Marissa Verdone and Cameron LeClaire, and sophomore Maggie Mahoney each had hits for the Huskies. Freshman Colleen Edwards drew a walk and had a sacrifice bunt.

Baseball

Morgan took a pair of one-run defeats in Michael Grant’s first week as head coach of the Huskies.

On April 5, the Huskies were on the road to face North Branford and dropped the contest by an 8-7 score. Two days later, Morgan had a game at Haddam-Killingworth and lost a 3-2 decision.
