SanGiovanni and Stettinger Both Get 100th Hit; East Haven Baseball Begins by Winning Two of Three

Softball

The Yellowjackets’ softball squad is 2-0 to start the year after posting a 10-5 win over Foran and an 18-10 victory against Stamford last week. Julia SanGiovanni got the 100th hit of her high-school career in the Foran victory, after which fellow senior captain Jessica Stettinger earned career hit No. 100 in the win versus Stamford.

East Haven hosted Foran for its season opener on April 5 and doubled up the Lions by the final score of 10-5. In addition to SanGiovanni’s 100th hit, the Easties also saw Selena Mauro get three hits, while Stettinger blasted a three-run homer. Taylor Myers picked up the win on the mound for Head Coach Ed Crisafi’s squad.

On April 7, East Haven claimed an 18-10 victory at non-conference opponent Stamford. Stettinger’s big day saw her slug out four hits with five RBI, including her 100th hit as a member of the Yellowjackets. Brianna Carrano had three hits with two RBI, and Mauro earned the win in the circle for East Haven.

Baseball

After losing its first game of the 2018 season, the East Haven baseball team bounced back by recording a pair of victories to stand at 2-1 on the year. The Yellowjackets lost to Hand (12-1) and then defeated Wilbur Cross (10-1) and Norwalk (10-6) to start off the season. Last year, East Haven went 13-10 and earned a share of the SCC Quinnipiac Division title.

East Haven began its campaign by taking a 12-1 home loss against Hand on March 31. The Easties were held to three hits in the defeat, including a RBI single from Jordan Aceto in the first inning.

On April 5, the Yellowjackets put their first win in the books by notching a 10-1 home victory over Cross. The game was tied 1-1, before East Haven scored four runs in the fourth inning and then added five more in the fifth. Starting pitcher Nate Furino struck out seven to get the win. Ryan Spano had three RBI, while Anthony Buffone doubled and tripled for Head Coach Butch Johnson’s squad.

Two days later, the Easties claimed a 10-6 win at Norwalk in a non-conference contest. Spano hit a grand slam in the seventh inning that blew the game open and finished the day with six RBI. In the bottom of the seventh, Spano came into the game with the bases loaded and nobody out and escaped the jam to preserve the victory for the Yellowjackets. Tristan Punzo went 3-for-3 with a RBI, and Furino singled and doubled with a RBI to help East Haven score 10 runs for the second straight game. Starting pitcher Jack Kabel pitched six innings to pick up the win on the mound.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven was on the road to face Platt Tech for a non-conference match in its season opener last week. The Yellowjackets won a close contest against the Panthers by the final score of 4-3 on April 5. East Haven went 5-12 on the season last spring.

Boys’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets started their year by hosting Xavier on April 5 and took a 7-0 defeat against the Falcons. East Haven is coming of a season that saw the team finish with a record of 6-12.
