H-K Baseball and Softball Pile Up the Runs Early On

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team scored 28 runs through its first three games of the spring season to start 2018 with a record of 3-0.

The Cougars routed Creed-Hillhouse 13-0 to open the year on March 31. H-K scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back. Tobey Callender and John Civiello each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Cougars. Trevor Rydel threw a one hitter, allowing only a single in the first inning, for his first win of the season.

H-K then defeated Old Saybrook 12-7 on April 5. Owen Marica had three hits, plus Civiello, Kyle Crandall, and Darren Hiller had two hits apice to lead the Cougars. Marica got the win in relief.

The Cougars then edged out Morgan 3-2 on April 7. Ross Meglin had three hits, including the game-winning base knock in the bottom of the seventh that drove in Alec Erskine, who had tripled to start the inning. Darren Hiller had three hits, while Marica, Alonzo, and Erskine each had two hits for the Cougars, who saw Marica get his second win in relief.

Last year, Head Coach Mark Brookes and the Cougars finished with an overall record of 19-7 after reaching their second straight Class M semifinal.

Softball

The Cougars’ softball squad began its spring campaign by posting an Opening Day victory.

H-K defeated Cromwell 13-3 on April 5 in its season opener. Olivia Whitehead had four hits and drove in two runs, while Ali Halligan had three hits, including a triple and a double, and two RBI for H-K. Faith Torello earned the victory on the mound by striking out nine over four innings, and reliever Adelle Biondo had seven strikeouts through the final three innings.

H-K finished with a record of 16-8 in 2017, advancing to the Shoreline Conference semifinals and the second round of states.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars started their season with a victory over North Branford last week. H-K and Head Coach Rod Pakus nabbed a 3-1 win versus North Branford on April 5 to things going on a good note.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K took a 4-3 defeat against North Branford in its first matchup of the year on April 5. Last year, Head Coach Donna Clark’s team finished with a record of 7-13.

Boys’ Lacrosse

H-K opened up its season by losing a 13-5 contest against Southington on March 31.

Last spring, Head Coach Mark Richard and H-K posted its best regular season record in program history by finishing with a mark of 13-3. H-K then defeated Morgan 12-9 in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semis to reach its first conference final, where the Cougars took a 10-6 loss to Valley Regional. After that, H-K dropped a 10-7 contest against Rocky Hill in the first round of the Class S State Tournament to finish 14-5.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Cougars took 15-3 loss against non-conference squad Branford to start their year on March 31.

In the 2017 season, H-K finished at 8-10 overall, while qualifying for both Shoreline Conference and Class S State tournaments.
