First Week of Spring Sports Brings Many Victories for Guilford

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team is out to a 2-0 start to its season after notching wins over Woodstock Academy and Lauralton Hall last week. The Indians started their spring with a 7-0 sweep over Woodstock Academy on March 31, after which they defeated Lauralton Hall 6-1 on April 5.

Facing Lauralton Hall, Faren Roth (6-0, 6-0), Charlotte Babbin (6-0, 6-2), Molly Babbin (6-1, 6-1), Acadia Hall (6-1, 6-4) were victorious in singles play for Guilford. The doubles tandems of Sam Stofflet and Emily Dietzko (6-0, 6-4), and Elaina Griffiths and Allie Stankewich (6-3, 6-1) also grabbed wins for the Indians.

Last year, after netting 13 wins for the regular season and reaching semifinals of the SCC Tournament, Head Coach Chris Marra and the Indians advanced to the Class M State Tournament final, where they took a loss against Hand.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians began their campaign with a 7-0 sweep versus Woodstock Academy on March 31.

Last spring, Head Coach Rob Messer’s club posted a record of 16-4 for the regular season to go with berths in the SCC and Class L State tournaments en route to finishing at 17-5 overall.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians are 3-0 in the early goings this spring after recording trifecta of triumphs in the first week of the season. Guilford took down Stamford 14-3 to open the season on March 31 and then defeated Sheehan 15-7 on April 5. Guilford closed the week with a 12-4 decision over Morgan on April 7.

In 2017, Head Coach Wendy Epke and the Indians qualified for the Class M State Tournament and won their first game before getting eliminated.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians went 1-1 for their first two games of the 2018 campaign. Guilford took an 11-8 defeat to East Lyme to start its year on March 31 and then rebounded with an 8-7 final over Glastonbury on April 5.

Last year, Head Coach Brian White’s squad qualified for the Class M State Tournament and won its opening-round contest before taking a loss to finish with a record of 9-9.

Softball

The Indians stand at 1-1 after dropping a contest and then getting a win in the opening week of the year. Guilford took a 10-4 loss to Hand on March 31, but then bounced back with a 5-0 shutout of East Lyme on April 5.

Facing East Lyme, Amanda King took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with nine strikeouts for the shutout. Charlotte Young had the big hit of the day for Guilford by clearing the bases with a two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth to give her team a 4-0 lead.

Last year, Head Coach Steve Zajac and the Indians finished with a record of 15-5 for the regular season and then reached their first SCC Tournament final en route to posting an overall record of 17-7.

Golf

Guilford took to the links with 179-189 Opening Day victory over Law on April 5 at Orange Hills Country Club. James Marks shot a 44, while Josh Krause posted a score of 49 for the Indians in the win.

Dave Esteban’s club finished tied for 13th place in the Division II State Championship last year.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Guilford began the 2018 campaign with a dual-meet against Law and Cross on April 4, earning a split to start off 1-1. The Indians defeated Law 90-60 and lost to the Governors by a 72-69 margin.

With Head Coach Jon Rivera, the Indians return to action following a 2017 campaign that saw them finish fourth at the SCC Championship and tied for fourth in the Class MM State Championship.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians opened their season with a meet against Law and took a 100-50 defeat on April 4.

Will Smith won the 400 in 52.5 seconds, Joe Walters took the 800 in a time of 2:09.70, Ben Crair was first in the 1,600 in 4:56.9, Elijah Dillon won the 3,200 in 10:50.5, and Shane Grattan scored first in the javelin with a toss of 103-6 for Guilford. The Indians’ 4x400 relay team of Walters, McKendry Eschinger, Cameron Hubbard, and Smith also claimed first place.

Second-place finishers included Connor Rose in the shot put, Ryan Costanzo in the high jump, Corey Sondak in the 200, and Brennan Kaisen in the 3,200. Third-place showings came from Rose in the shot, Costanzo in the long jump, Sondak in the 100, Eschinger in the 400, and Rhys Kalama for the 800.

“Our team is young, and they responded well to the competition,” said Head Coach George Cooksey. “Captains Will Smith, Rhys Kalama, and Jacob Walker, as well as senior Corey Sondak, have been a strong stabilizing force for our younger athletes. We’re looking forward to a season full of promise.”

Cooksey’s group finished eighth at the SCC Championship in 2017, before tying for seventh at the Class MM State Championship.
