Hand Boys’ Hoops, Hockey Eliminated from States; Naclerio Competes at New England Gymnastics Meet

Boys’ Basketball

The Hand boys’ basketball team competed in the Division III State Tournament and came away with a first-round victory, before dropping a contest in the second round last week

The 19th-seeded Tigers traveled to No. 14 Darien seed for a first-round game on March 5 and scored a 46-43 overtime win against the Blue Wave. Graeme McGivern led the way for the Tigers by scoring 18 points, while Tyler Boris added eight points in the win.

In the second round, Hand took a 69-41 defeat at No. 3 seed Prince Tech on March 9. The Tigers finish their season with a record of 10-13 and qualified for both the SCC and State tournaments after going 1-19 just one season ago.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Tigers entered the Division III State Tournament as the No. 13 seed last week and took a first-round defeat against a Sheehan team that they had previously lost to in their Conference Tournament.

Hand traveled to Choate to face the 4th-seeded Titans in the first round of states and lost a 7-3 contest on March 5. The Tigers concluded their campaign with an overall mark of 5-17.

Gymnastics

Erin Naclerio competed for the Hand gymnastics team at the New England Championship that took place on March 10 at the Pinkerton Academy Field House in Derry, New Hampshire.

Naclerio posted an all-around total of 34.875 by scoring a 9.1 for the floor exercise, a 9.05 on the beam, an 8.425 on bars, and an 8.3 on vault at the regional meet.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Hand opened up the Class M State Championship by having two athletes compete at the Diving Championship portion of the event at Bulkeley High School on March 9.

Mary Huminski finished 13th for the diving competition with a score of 297.75. Jessica Murphy finished 23rd by recording a score of 247.60 for the Tigers.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Tigers saw some solid results at the recent Individual State Championships that were held at Hopkins on March 3 and 5.

For the girls’ sabre competition, Maggie Lesnick finished 14th, Nia Calia-Bogan placed 19th, and Natalie McCarthy came in 24th place for the Tigers. Carolyn Quoka finished 25th in the girls’ foil tournament, and Ally Lesnik finished 29th for girls’ epee.

On the boys’ side, Dan Shurk finished 38th for the foil tournament, and Zach Ginsburg placed 39th.
