Old Saybrook Parks and Rec Holds Inaugural Co-ed Indoor Soccer Tourney

The Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation [OSPR] Department held its inaugural Co-ed Indoor Soccer Tournament as part of its Friday Night Teen Center program on Feb. 2 and Feb. 9. The program was free to all 6th-graders, 7th-graders, and 8th-graders in town and included 36 participants. The players came up with their own rosters, team names, and uniforms.

The first night consisted of a round-robin style tournament in which each team played eight games to determine its seeding in the single-elimination tournament that took place the following week. The final came down to a best-of-three series between team Rules Tuk Tuk Hunt and the Savage Soccer Squad. It all came down to Game 3 after Savage Soccer Squad took Game One and Rules Tuk Tuk Hunt won Game 2. Both teams gave their best effort and, in the end, Savage Soccer Squad consisting of Allie LaMotte, Peter Wisialowski, Ryan Stratton, and Michael Kapij defeated Rules Tuk Tuk Hunt for the tournament title. It’s a tradition at the OSPR for the winning team to sign the tournament trophy ball, which is displayed in the Teen Center.

Another one of the tournament’s highlights was the Sweet Luna’s Team Spirit Award. The Esgeti Squad of Maggie Ashe, Noah Skiles, Brent Ling and Christina Grace won the award for displaying the most spirit in their team uniform or costume through the designing and decorating of the team’s T-shirts.

The OSPR would like to thank Sweet Luna’s on Main Street for its sponsorship and donation to this tournament.
