Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team defeated Windsor Locks in its first game of the Division V State Tournament, before losing to East Hampton in the quarterfinal round last week. The Rams finished their season with a record of 16-8.

Old Saybrook posted a 62-52 victory versus No. 9 seed Windsor Locks in a second-round contest in the Division V State Tournament on March 8. The 8th-seeded Rams, who had earned a first-round bye, then played at No. 1 seed and undefeated Shoreline Conference champion East Hampton in the quarterfinals on March 10 and lost by the final of 75-55.

In the previous week's action, Old Saybrook lost to East Hampton by the final score of 72-61 in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals on Feb. 28. The No. 5 seed Rams fought tooth and nail against top-seeded East Hampton squad, but were unable to hand the Bellringers their first loss of the season. East Hampton would go on to become Shoreline Conference champions by defeating No. 2 seed Cromwell in the tournament final.

The Bellringers outscored Old Saybrook 19-14 in the first quarter, although the Rams shrunk the deficit to two points by the end of the half. Rams’ Head Coach Patrick Quinn said the game was essentially decided in the third quarter, when East Hampton grew the lead to 11 points.

“In the third quarter, we got off to a slow start, and they outscored us 16-7,” Quinn said. “We didn’t quit. We matched well in the fourth offensively. It was just too little, too late with a tremendous shooting team like East Hampton.”

Shane Henderson put together a 29-point effort just four days after he notched his 1,000th career point. Victor Pascoe provided 15 points and nine rebounds, while Anthony Karg also reached double-digit points with 10. Keaton Roarick had 10 boards on the night.

Boys' Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton boys' ice hockey team took a 3-1 loss at North Branford in the first round of the Division II State Tournament at Northford Ice Pavilion on March 6. The Yellowjackets finished their campaign with an overall record of 9-11-1.

Previously, the Yellowjackets took a 3-0 defeat against North Haven on Feb. 27. In its final game of the regular season the following day, East Haven topped Westhill-Stamford 4-2 on its home ice at DiLungo Rink. Alec Speirs scored a pair of goals, including the go-ahead tally, while Joe Consiglio and Zach Paquin also lit the lamp in victory. Matt Henderson and Consiglio had two assists each, plus Paquin, Rocco Plano, and Chris Teto also assisted on goals. Matt Twarowski recorded 18 saves in net to earn the win.
