Morgan Cheerleading Places 3rd in Class S; Smith Vaults at the State Open

Cheerleading

The Morgan cheerleading team competed at the Class S State Championship that took place at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on March 4. The Huskies scored a total of 147.3 points to finish in third place at the state meet, just edging out fourth-place Notre Dame-Fairfield, which scored a 147.1. Previously in the season, the Huskies finished in first place at the inaugural Shoreline Conference Championship.

Gymnastics

Morgan senior Haley Smith represented the Haddam-Killingworth/Hale-Ray/Morgan gymnastics team at the State Open Championship on March 3 at Pomperaug High School. Smith competed in the vault at the Open and finished in a tie for 16th place by totaling a score of 8.85.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Morgan fencing program hosted Hand to close out the regular season on Senior Night on Feb. 28 and saw both its boys’ and girls’ teams come away with a victory.

On the girls’ side, the Huskies defeated Hand 17-10. The épée squad was led by a 3-0 performance from junior Jennifer Accetta. In sabre, senior Gaby Bussiere and junior Olivia Morrissey both had 2-0 records. Senior Nina Kelly went undefeated at 2-0 for the girls’ foil squad.

As for the boys, Morgan defeated Hand 19-8 with solid performances turned in by juniors Noah Scarpace and Alex Rauccio, who both went 3-0.

On March 3, Morgan headed to Hopkins for the Individual State Championships, where best performance of the day was turned in by junior Accetta in girls’ épée. In the opening round, she finished with a 6-1 record to earn the No. 7 seed in the direct-elimination round. After going 3-2 in five demanding 15-touch bouts, Accetta grabbed a fourth-place medal and received All-State First Team honors.

Also in girls’ épée, seniors Olivia Silver and Mary Kate Staunton placed 18th and 21st, respectively, for Morgan. In girls’ foil, junior Rebecca Cockley placed 32nd, followed by senior Emma Riccio in 44th, and Grace Hull in 51st place.

For the boys, the épée team saw junior Scott Accetta take ninth place after going 6-0 in the pool round to earn the No. 3 seed for the direct-elimination round. Also in épée, senior Cenzo Saturno placed 32nd, and sophomore Andrew Daly finished in 42nd place. The foil team was represented by junior Caleb Adams-Hull, who placed 27th, along with senior Wyatt Reu in 57th and sophomore Thomas Baker in 68th.
