H-K Wrestling Sends Seven to State Open

The Haddam-Killingworth wrestling team sent seven wrestlers to the State Open Championship that was held on Feb. 23 and 24 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. H-K’s wrestlers combined to score 21 points and put the team into a tie for 41st place at the meet. The wrestlers who competed at the Open for H-K were Cam Hines in the 106-pound weight class, along with Malakai Maher (126), Matt Jenkins (138, 2 wins), Jake Frith (145), Justin Popp (160, 2 wins), Trevor Hines (220, 2 wins), and Aiden Maher (285, 1 win).

Cam Hines lost in the championship bracket to Caleb Brick of Southington by pin at 4:35 and then lost in the consolation round against Mike Rapuano of Xavier (pin at 4:19). Malakai Maher lost to Jacob Cardozo of Southington (pin at 3:29) in the championship draw, and then lost a 6-2 decision against Cole Dirico of Ledyard. Jenkins defeated Alex Edwards from Westhill 5-4, after which he lost a 5-1 contest to Trumbull’s Matt Ryan in the championship bracket. In consolation bouts, he bested Jared Swett of Lyman Memorial-Windham Tech (pin at 2:39) and then lost 4-0 to Tyler Schultz of New Milford.

Frith was pinned at 1:22 in a championship bracket opener against Tim Roberts of East Hartford. In his consolation bracket, he took a pin at the 3:37 mark against Bethel’s Eamon Toland-Matos. Popp defeated Bethel’s Maximillian Khoshabo by 7-6 final in the championship draw and was later pinned 56 seconds into his match against Mike Angers of Tolland. In consolation bouts, he defeated Markeese Thompson of Maloney (pin at 2:05) and lost 5-1 to Alec Arnold of Wethersfield.

Trevor Hines defeated Kamren Snodgrass of Norwich Free Academy (pin at 4:42) in the championship draw and then lost by pin at 32 seconds versus Dakota Grover of Fitch. In consolation matches, he prevailed 12-9 over Noah Kimball of New London, and then lost to Branford’s Kyle Zalewski by pin at 2:11. Aiden Maher lost his championship bracket opener to St. Bernard-Norwich Tech’s Roark Ryan (3-1). In the consolation rounds, he pinned Michael O’Connell of Lyman Memorial-Windham Tech at 2:13 and then lost to Ellis Tech’s Collin Delsanto by a pin at the 4:51 mark.

Girls’ Basketball

Haddam-Killingworth squared off against familiar foe Valley Regional for a qualifying-round game in the Class M State Tournament last week and took a loss to the Warriors to end their campaign.

No. 33 seed H-K traveled to No. 32 seed and Shoreline Conference rival Valley Regional on Feb. 24, one a week after the Cougars had defeated Valley in the Shoreline Conference Tournament. In the matchup in states, the Warriors prevailed by a 48-37 final against H-K, which finished the season with an overall record of 9-14 and had a strong second half to qualify for the playoffs.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars closed out the 2017-’18 season by playing a game against North Branford last week. H-K hosted North Branford on Feb. 19 and took a 64-42 defeat to finish with a recored of 2-18.

The Cougars defeated Hale-Ray 52-51 on Jan. 27, and then edged out Morgan 70-69 on Feb. 13 for their two victories on the season.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug boys’ ice hockey team finished its regular season with a record of 14-6 and now gets ready to compete in the postseason.

On Feb. 18, the Trojans lost by a 3-2 final to Sheehan. However, they came right back to close the regular season strong by posting a 9-1 rout over Shepaug-Litchfield-Nonnewaug-Thomaston on Feb. 24.

Next up for the Trojans is the SCC/SWC Division III Tournament, in which they are the top seed. The tourney begins with a semifinal game on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Milford Ice Pavilion at 8 p.m. versus No. 4 seed Bethel-Brookfield-Danbury. The winner moves on to the final against either No. 2 Sheehan or No. 3 Hand on Friday, March 2 at Bennett Rink in West Haven at 8 p.m.
