North Haven Girls’ Hockey, Boys’ Hoops Ready for Playoffs Following Solid Regular Seasons

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire girls’ ice hockey squad put a bow on an excellent regular season by recording a pair of recent victories to finish with a mark of 16-4. The Blades are playing in the SCC South Division Tournament this week and then have states following that.

On Feb. 11, the Blades skated to an 8-0 home win over Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Oxford Bethel at The Rinks at Shelton. North Haven senior Julianna Daddio made 15 saves for the shutout, while junior Shannon Reilly and North Haven sophomore Melissa Montesi each had an assist. Andrea DelVecchio scored two goals, Cally Dixon handed out a pair of assists, Sophia Papa had a goal with an assist, and Tess Csejka scored a goal to go with two assists in the victory.

Then on Feb. 13, the Blades faced Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme for a SCC South Division duel at Northford Ice Pavilion and came away with a 5-3 win to finish the year at 6-2 in divisional play. The Blades led 2-1 after the first period, were up 3-2 through two, and then scored the first two goals of the third to put the victory on ice. Montesi scored a goal and had two assists for the Blades, who saw Megan Spring score two goals to go with an assist.

The No. 3 seed Blades hosted No. 6 Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme in the first round of the SCC South Division Tournament on Feb. 19 (after press time). With a win, the Blades would play at No. 2 seed Hamden in the semifinals on Feb. 21 (after press time). The final takes place at Bennett Rink in West Haven at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24. After SCCs, the Blades will compete in the State Tournament that begins on Monday, Feb. 26.

Boys’ Basketball

The North Haven boys’ basketball team completed its regular season with a record of 12-8 after splitting its final two games last week. The Indians took a loss at Law, before closing out the regular season with a victory at Whitney Tech. North Haven is competing in the SCC Tournament this week.

On Feb. 14, the Indians took a 66-61 loss at Law. North Haven trailed 18-13 after one quarter, but then outscored Law 16-7 in the second to bring a 29-25 lead to halftime. However, Law went ahead by winning the third quarter 21-11 and then hung on in the fourth to get the victory. Senior Jake Lafond scored 13 points, fellow senior Jared Sancho and sophomore Dave Christoforo both had 12 points, and sophomores Ethan Okwuosa and RJ Hager netted 11 points apiece for the Indians.

Two days later, North Haven wrapped up the regular season by rallying for a 91-75 overtime victory at Whitney Tech in a non-conference game. The Indians were down at halftime, but then outscored the Owls in the second half to force OT. North Haven brought its momentum into the extra session by outscoring Whitney Tech 18-2 to run away with the win. Hager had a huge night in the victory by scoring 33 points on 10 field goals and a 12-for-12 showing from the free-throw line. Lafond scored 17 points, Sancho had 13 points, Okwuosa scored 12 points, Christoforo had 10 points, and sophomore Bryce Charney added six points for Head Coach Justin Falcon’s squad.

North Haven is the No. 10 seed in the SCC Tournament and will play at No. 7 Career in a first-round game at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. With a win, the Indians would face No. 2 seed Guilford in the quarterfinals at Branford High School at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24. The semis are at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Monday, Feb. 26 and the final takes place at the same site at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28. After SCCs, North Haven will play in the Division III State Tournament.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Indians’ boys’ ice hockey squad picked up a win against Cheshire, before dropping a pair of contests last week, and has a record of 6-9-1 entering the home stretch of the regular season. North Haven has four games left and can qualify for the Division II State Tournament by earning four points. Wins are worth two points and ties are one point in the standings. The Indians’ remaining games are against New Milford, Cheshire, the East Haven co-op team, and Branford.

In last week’s action, North Haven got going by skating to a 5-1 win over SCC Division III opponent Hand in a road game at Northford Ice Pavilion on Feb. 12.

Two days later, the Indians hosted fellow SCC Division II squad Watertown-Pomperaug for a showdown at Northford Ice Pavilion and lost by a 4-3 final. Sophomore Jake Wentworth, senior Alex Cianci, and senior Jamie Montesi scored goals for the Indians, who made it a one-goal game by scoring two goals after trailing 4-1 entering the third period. Sam Pethick handed out two assists, and fellow senior CJ Kenny also had an assist in the game.

Then on Oct. 17, North Haven faced off against another divisional opponent when it played Guilford at DiLungo Rink in East Haven. Guilford rallied from a three-goal deficit to win the game by the score of 4-3 in overtime. Montesi scored from sophomore Jack Marottolo, after which Kenny got a goal on assists from Marottolo and freshman Eli Brubacher to give North Haven a 2-0 lead after one period. Junior Simon Brubacher scored early in the second to put North Haven up 3-0, before Guilford mounted its comeback by scoring three goals in the second period and then winning it with a goal at the 7:21 mark of overtime.
