Finkeldey Vaults to Victory at the State Open for Old Saybrook; Boys’ 4x800 Places 8th

Girls’ Indoor Track

Tyra Finkeldey took first place in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet-6 inches for the Old Saybrook girls’ indoor track team at the State Open Championship last week. Finkeldey, who had previously won the pole vault at the Shoreline Conference and Class S State championships, scored 10 points with her win in the event at the Open to score 10 points on behalf of the Rams, who finished in ninth place with 16 points at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 17.

Old Saybrook received six more points from its quartet of Dylan Adams, Finkeldey, Allison Cody, and Jessica Stratton, which finished third in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay with a time of 4:22.16.

Grace Hanratty finished eighth in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:05.98, and she also was part of the 4x800 relay that finished 11th at 9:57.95. Tehra Givehand, Emily Stratton, and Jessica Stratton ran with Hanratty in the relay.

Additionally for Old Saybrook, Rachel Vigorita placed 13th in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, while Annea Thaci finished 15th in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.21 seconds.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Rams had their 4x800 relay squad of Luke Hanratty, Cooper Luciani, Xavier Rios, and Eric Sultini compete at the State Open last week. The quartet came in eighth place by recording a time of 8:22.61 at the meet.

Boys’ Basketball

The Rams had just one game at home against Old Lyme last week and lost the contest by the score of 53-50 on Feb. 13.

Old Saybrook was down 14 points with 3:30 left in the game and rallied to take a one-point edge with 49 seconds left on the clock, before the Wildcats retook the lead. Victor Pascoe was instrumental in the Rams’ rally and finished the night with 27 points and seven rebounds. Shane Henderson had 13 points and seven boards, while Anthony Karg added five points and seven rebounds.

Girls’ Basketball

Old Saybrook lost to Old Lyme in its final game of the season to finish the year with a 7-13 record and come up one win shy of qualifying for the postseason. On Feb. 12, the Rams played a game at Old Lyme and took a 70-24 defeat against the Wildcats.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton boys’ ice hockey squad earned a 5-2 victory over Woodstock Academy last week to move within either one win or a tie from clinching a berth in the State Tournament for the 32nd consecutive season. The win improved East Haven’s record to 7-6-1 for the year.

Matt Henderson and Alec Speirs both scored two goals for the Yellowjackets, while Joe Consiglio netted the other goal. Consiglio, Henderson, and Chris Giglietti all finished with two assists, and Rocco Plano and Charlie Carlo of Old Saybrook each had one. Matt Twarowski recorded 24 saves in goal to help East Haven get the victory.
