Morgan's Relays Post Some Points at Class S Girls’ Track Meet; Girls’ Basketball Grabs Another Win

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Morgan girls’ indoor track team saw three of its relays account for 13 points at the Class S State Championship last week. With those 13 points, the Huskies finished in seventh place as the Class S meet, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 10.

Morgan’s 4x200 relay quartet of Mikayla Mancini, Alyssa LeMay, Taylor Wyatt, and Courtney Viglione finished third with a time of 1:51.86 in states. The 1,600 sprint medley relay of Lemay, Wyatt, Viglione, and Allison Gardner turned in a time of 4:36.63 to also earn third place, while the 4x800 squad of Delaney Mastriano, Ranaudo, Kelly, and Gardner finished sixth with a time of 10:37.63. In the 4x400 relay, Ranaudo, Maura Kelly, and Viglione teamed up with Clara Franzoni to take seventh place with a time of 4:24.59.

Also for Morgan, Colleen Edwards finished 17th in the shot put (28-2.25), and LeMay placed 25th in the long jump (14-5.25) at the state meet.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Huskies were represented by several athletes at last week’s Class S Championship meet.

Anthony Coretti came in eighth place in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.53 seconds, while Anes Gadun finished in 17th with a time of 8.89 in the event for Morgan. Juan Avila took 20th place in the long jump behind a distance of 18 feet-3.75 inches.

The Huskies also say three relays compete at states, including their 4x400 quartet of Gadun, Patrick Wilson, Calvin Jackson, and Thomas Southwood (9th, 3:48.97); the 1,600 sprint medley team of Ryan Warner, Jackson, Southwood, and Chayse Lofgren (12th, 4:01.83); and the 4x200 of Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Avila, Coretti, and Jackson (15th, 1:41.55).

Girls’ Basketball

The Huskies played a pair of games last week and won one of them to move their record to 10-8 on the season.

On Feb. 5, Morgan was at North Branford, where they lost to the Thunderbirds 49-36. The Huskies received another steady game from senior captain Brianna Navarra, who scored 12 points to go with seven rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Caitlyn Donadio put up some solid numbers with 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Rebecca Shamp and Leah McComiskey both had seven boards, while McComiskey also had three assists. Kylie Clifton added six points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the victory.

On Feb. 8, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and secured a 43-31 win over the Warriors. The Huskies got out to a commanding 12-3 lead in the first quarter and were up 22-8 at halftime on their way to the double-digit win. Donadio led all scorers with 15 points on the evening to go with five rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Shamp (13 rebounds) and McComiskey (12 rebounds) were outstanding on the boards, and Navarra stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five boards, five assists, and five steals. Clifton had nine points to go with two assists and a steal.

Boys’ Basketball

The Huskies stand at 3-13 this season after taking a pair of recent defeats.

On Feb. 6, Morgan hosted North Branford and lost a close match by the score 59-57. Three days later, the Huskies were on the road to play Valley Regional took a 76-62 defeat against the Warriors.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

On Jan. 31, the Morgan fencing program faced perennial top-three team North Haven for a home meet at Eliot Middle School. The Huskies’ girls’ team bested North Haven 16-11, while the boys’ team took a 24-3 defeat.

The girls’ team was led in sabre by Olivia Morrissey, who went 2-0 on the day, along with Angela Recine (2-1) and Robyn Vuilleumier (2-1). In épée, Olivia Silver, Jennifer Accetta, and Mary Kate Staunton all went 2-1 for Morgan.

On Feb. 3, the Huskies were on the road to face Hopkins for a tri-meet that also included Greenwich and North Haven. The girls went 2-1 with wins against North Haven (17-10) and Hopkins (14-13), while also taking a loss against Greenwich (14-13). As for the boys’ side, the Huskies earned a 14-13 win versus Greenwich (14-13) and also lost to Hopkins (16-11) and North Haven (19-8).

In girls’ épée, Olivia Silver went 7-1, while Jennifer Accetta was 6-2 for the meet. In the sabre competition, Olivia Morrissey (6-3) and Robyn Vuilleumier (3-1) turned in strong performances for Morgan.

In sabre for the boys, Noah Scarpace and Alex Rauccia posted records of 7-2 and 6-3, respectively. Scott Accetta led the épée squad with a 7-2 record on the day.
