It’s Sweeps Week for Westbrook Boys’ Hoops; Engels Takes 5th in Shot Put at States

Boys’ Basketball

The Westbrook boys’ basketball team played two games in last week’s action and came away with two more wins to improve its record to 4-13 on the season. The Knights have now claimed victory in four of their last five games.

On Feb. 6, the Knights hosted Hale-Ray and grabbed a decisive 63-44 victory against the Noises. Jack Hayes scored 19 points to go with seven rebounds, while Seth Caslin had 18 points on the night. Vincent Dyer led the team on the boards by grabbing 10 rebounds, and Binak Cecunjanin had four assists.

On Feb. 9, Westbrook defeated Portland at home by a score of 69-56. Caslin poured in 26 points for the Knights. Hayes had another big night with 17 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Dyer had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards to go with six assists in the victory.

Girls’ Basketball

The Knights took defeats four recent contests and are now 7-11 on the year.

On Feb. 5, Westbrook was on the road against Hale-Ray and lost a close game by the score of 39-34. The next day, the Knights headed to Portland to face the Highlanders and lost 50-37. Then on Feb. 9, Westbrook had a game at Old Lyme and lost 41-15. The Knights concluded their week by taking a 59-35 loss at Valley Regional on Feb. 11.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Westbrook sent a handful of competitors to the Class S State Championship at Floyd Little athletic Center on Feb. 10. Danyelle Engels had the best showing for Westbrook as she took fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet-6.75 inches to earn a couple of points for the Knights.

Avery Bauman competed in the pole vault and finished 11th place by clearing 7-6. She also ran in the 1,000, where her time of 3:26.11 earned her 11th place. The Knights’ 4x200 relay team of Christine Gallagher, Alexandria Young, Elizabeth Gallagher, and Tirzah Blomquist finished 13th with a time of 1:55.60 at the state meet. Blomquist (23rd, 14-8.75) and Young (34th, 13-7.25) also competed in the long jump for Westbrook.
