H-K Boys’ Track Places 2nd at Shoreline Championship; Girls Finish 3rd

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ indoor track team finished in second place at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 3. The Cougars scored 144 points and were the runner-up to Old Saybrook, which scored 150 points.

H-K took the top three spots in the 1,000 behind Conor McCabe (2:45.52), Jonah Spector (2:45.70), and Andrew Meredith (2:45.72). The same trio took the top three slots in the 1,600 with winner Meredith (4:47.44), McCabe (4:48.59), and Spector (4:49.17), and then again in the 3,200 with Spector (9:53.21), Meredith (9:53.46), and McCabe (9:53.58). The Cougars’ the 1,600 sprint medley of Colin Regan, Bradley Rakowski, Kyle Criscuolo, and Seth Freeman finished first (3:53.46) over Coginchaug (3:54.84). Colton Lavoie won the shot put title (42-0.75) over second-place Max Chupak of Old Saybrook (39-4.25).

Also, the 4x800 relay of Freeman, Owen Howes, Kurt Sodergren, and Criscuolo was runner-up (8:37.52) to Old Saybrook (8:30.87); the 4x200 relay of Colin Regan, Dmytri Mallon, Rakowski, and Kyle Crandall finished third (1:41.72); and the 4x400 relay in Regan, Rakowski, Freeman, and Criscuolo was third (3:45.55). Seth Regan dashed to third in the 55 (6.90), Wally Sample placed fourth for the shot put (38-9), Nate Breiling was fifth (37-9), and Chase Mack was eighth (36-0.75); Kurt Sodergren was fifth in the 600 (1:33.81) with Howes in eighth (1:35.44), Kurt Sodergren also finished fifth for the 1,600 (4:55.15), Luke Sodergren finished sixth in the 55 hurdles (8.97), Tyler Knapp finished sixth in the pole vault (10-6), and Mallon was eighth for the 300 (40.45).

Girls’ Indoor Track

H-K finished third with 69 points at the Shoreline Conference Championship last week.

Veronica Chrzanowski finished second in both the long jump (15-10.5) and the 55-meter dash (7.91) for H-K. The 4x800 relay group of Lexie Bouthillier, Emma Anziano, Kelsey D’Amico, and Julianne Kelly was the runner-up with a time of 10:20.41, while the 1,600 sprint medley relay of Autumn Coady, Ashley Duncanson, Elena Boyington, and Emma Anziano also finished second at 4:39.29.

Coady was third in the 55 hurdles (9.59), Anziano finished third for the 1,000 (3:15.59), Kelly came in fourth for the 600 (1:46.69), Bouthilier finished fifth for the 1,600 (5:50.16) with Abigail Bagnoli in seventh (6:06.89), and Meara Bodak was fifth for the 3,200 (12:39.56). The 4x400 relay of Boyington, Duncanson, Bouthillier, and Kelly was fifth (4:28.35), and the 4x200 of Duncanson, Boyington, Coady, and Chrzanowski also placed fifth (1:53.57). Gabby Wyzykowski came in seventh for the shot put (26-7) for H-K.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug boys’ ice hockey squad improved to 10-3 after posting victory over Hand this past week.

The Trojans defeated Hand by an 11-6 final on Jan. 31. Kyle Roberts notched his 100th career point in the victory for the Trojans.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K stands at 6-10 following another victory last week.

The Cougars notched their fourth straight win with a 49-45 final over Westbrook on Jan. 29. H-K then took a 73-38 loss to Cromwell on Feb. 1.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars took a pair of losses last week and are now 1-14.

H-K dropped a 76-72 decision to Westbrook on Jan. 31. The Cougars then lost to Cromwell 66-28 on Feb. 2.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

H-K is now 4-3 after splitting two meets this past week.

H-K defeated Classical Magnet-University 95-68 on Jan. 29. The 200 medley relay of Jake Torello, Max Revis, Michael Morman, and Chris Garrelts finished first (1:53.78) for the Cougars. Morman took the 200 freestyle (2:02.40), Eli Houlton captured the 200 individual medley (2:19.13) with Revis the runner-up (2:22.44), Kyle Mazziotti took the 50 free (23.91) and Zach Houlton was second (24.01), while Eli Houlton came out on top for the 100 butterfly (1:05.87) and James Clemente followed in second (1:07.84). Mazziotti was the 100 freestyle winner (52.92) with Garrelts in second (53.90), and Zach Houlton finished first for the 500 freestyle (5:02.06). The 200 freestyle relay saw Cougars finish 1-2 as the team of Morman, the Houlton brothers, and Mazziotti took first (1:39.46), while the grouping of Clemente, Simon Brown, Jonah Freeman, and Nate Carlson finished second (1:52.46). Torello was first for the 100 backstroke (1:00.15) with Morman in second (1:03.09), Revis won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.15, exhibition), and the 400 freestyle relay of the Houltons, Torello, and Mazziotti was first (3:49.20, exhibition).

The Cougars next took a 92-77 defeat to Xavier on Feb. 1. The 200 medley relay of Torello, Revis, Eli Houlton, and Garrelts finished first (1:45.72), Morman was runner-up for the 200 free (1:58.30), Mazziotti won 200 IM (2:06.55), Garrelts won the 50 free (23.68) with Eli Houlton second (24.41), and Mazziotti won the 100 freestyle (50.59). The 200 freestyle relay of Morman, Garrelts, Freeman, and Mazziotti placed second (1:38.84), Torello was first in the 100 backstroke (58.86) with Brown in second (1:19.19), Revis finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.33), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Morman, Torello, Revis, and Mazziotti finished second (3:41.14).

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Hale-Ray/Morgan gymnastics team had a meet against Valley Regional and Mercy at Flip-Flop Gymnastics on Feb. 2. The Cougars posted a score of 111.95 to defeat Valley Regional (91.0), while losing to Mercy (131.70).

Competing for the team in the meet were Ally Veins (8.1 on vault, 6.8 on bars, 7.8 on beam, 7.9 on floor), Emma Anderson (8.4 on vault, 5.4 on bars, 7.6 on beam, 7.0 on the floor), Brianna Livingston (8.0 on vault, 5.7 on bars, 7.4 on beam, 6.7 on floor), and Haley Smith (8.7 on vault, 7.6 on bars, 7.9 on beam, 8.15 on floor).
