The Morgan girls’ indoor track squad won three events on its way to finishing in second place overall at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 3.
Kate Daley finished first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:49.54 for the Huskies. Morgan received another first-place finish from its 4x200-meter relay team of Alyssa LeMay, Mikayla Mancini, Taylor Wyatt, and Courtney Viglione, which recorded a time 1:51.96. Also, the Huskies’ 1,600 sprint medley relay of LeMay, Wyatt, Viglione, and Allison Gardner placed first by posting a time of 4:29.91 at the meet. Daley and both relays made the All-Shoreline First Team for Morgan.
Morgan’s quartet of Allison Gardner, Maura Kelly, Isabella Ranaudo, and Daley finished third in the both the 4x800 (10:27.03) and 4x400 (4:24.50) relays. Wyatt secured third in the 55-meter dash (7.92), LeMay took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet-8 inches, and Mancini earned fourth in the high jump (4-6) and was fifth in the 300 (46.06). Georgia Nye came in fifth in the 55 hurdles at 9.93 seconds, Colleen Edwards’s throw of 28-5 was good for fifth in the shot put, and Clara Franzoni finished sixth in the 300 (46.59).
Boys’ Indoor Track
Anthony Coretti finished first in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.35 seconds for the Huskies at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Morgan finished in fifth place as a team at the meet.
Anes Gadun took fifth place in the 55 hurdles with an 8.88 for Morgan. The Huskies’ 4x400 relay of Gadun, Calvin Jackson, Patrick Wilson, and Thomas Southwood placed second with a time of 3:42.75. Coretti was named to the All-Shoreline Conference First Team, while Gadun, Jackson, Wilson and Soutwood earned Second Team honors.
Morgan’s 1,600 sprint medley relay tof Juan Avila, Chayse Lofgren, Southwood, and Jackson finished third (3:57.61) at the Shoreline meet. Avila also was fourth in the long jump (18 feet-8 inches) and part of the fifth-place 4x200 relay with Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Coretti, and Jackson (1:42.96). The 4x800 relay of Lofgren, Justin Mucha, Southwood, and Andrew Passante came in fourth at 8:53.85. Zach Tuccitto was sixth in the 3,200 at 10:35.93.
Girls’ Basketball
The Huskies split their two games last week to put their record at 9-7 on the season.
Morgan headed to Old Lyme for a Shoreline Conference matchup on Jan. 29 and prevailed 42-38. The Huskies outscored Old Lyme 20-3 in the first quarter and then controlled the pace throughout the game. Caitlyn Donadio posted 14 points with three rebounds and two steals, while Brianna Navarra had nine points, seven boards, and three steals. Kylie Clifton had six rebounds, five assists, and four steals; Rebecca Shamp scored eight points to go along with seven rebounds, and Leah McComiskey had nine rebounds with three assists for Morgan.
Three days later, the Huskies had a game at Naugatuck and took a 37-32 defeat. Naugatuck outscored the Huskies 7-4 in the first quarter and 12-6 in the second to take a 19-10 lead. Morgan got its offense going more in the second half, but not enough to overcome the Greyhounds’ lead. Donadio scored 16 points and added four boards with three steals. Shamp and McComiskey each had six points and five rebounds in the loss.
Boys’ Basketball
Morgan took a pair of defeats last week and is now 3-11 on the season.
On Jan. 31, the Huskies were at home to face Old Lyme and lost 62-32. Two days later, Morgan had a game at Amistad and lost by a 64-28 final.
Gymnastics
The Haddam-Killingworth/Hale-Ray/Morgan gymnastics team had a meet against Valley Regional and Mercy at Flip-Flop Gymnastics on Feb. 2. The Cougars posted a score of 111.95 to defeat Valley Regional (91.0), while losing to Mercy (131.70).
Competing for the team in the meet were Ally Veins (8.1 on vault, 6.8 on bars, 7.8 on beam, 7.9 on floor), Emma Anderson (8.4 on vault, 5.4 on bars, 7.6 on beam, 7.0 on the floor), Brianna Livingston (8.0 on vault, 5.7 on bars, 7.4 on beam, 6.7 on floor), and Haley Smith (8.7 on vault, 7.6 on bars, 7.9 on beam, 8.15 on floor).
