Girls’ Basketball

The Valley girls’ basketball team played two games last week, winning one and losing the other to move to 7-7 on the season. The Warriors are just one win shy of qualifying for the Class M State Tournament.

On Jan. 29, the Warriors were on the road to face Creed and won by a 40-26 score. Valley held a 20-18 lead by the end of the first half. Then after the intermission, Valley held Creed to just four points in both the third and fourth quarters to put away the win.

Head Coach Geoff Konstan was glad to see his team buckle down defensively after he made that a point of emphasis during the halftime discussion.

“We had a real solid halftime talk, and the girls responded in a huge way,” said Konstan “In the second half, it was Paige Atkinson and Annie Cooper. Annie came in and gave us a massive second half. They were just ripping down rebounds.”

Sadie Konstan led the offense with 11 points, and she also had four rebounds. Tiffani Turpin scored nine points in the contest, as did Atkinson, who also hauled in 13 rebounds. Cooper had nine rebounds and two assists.

Two days later, the Warriors hosted Coginchaug and lost 46-31. Valley was bothered by the Blue Devils’ defense in the first quarter and trailed 10-2 heading into the second. After losing more ground in the second and third quarters to fall behind 39-18, Valley started to cut into the lead in the fourth, but was unable to climb all the way back.

Sadie Konstan led the Warriors in scoring for the second straight game with 11 points, and she also added three rebounds and two steals. Cooper had 12 rebounds, six of which were offensive boards. Turpin had seven points and four rebounds for Valley.

Wrestling

Ben Falivene represented Valley Regional at the Four Corners Dual Meet hosted by Morgan on Feb. 3. Falivene finished with a 2-1 record on the day in the 220-pound weight class.

First, Falivene defeated Coby Carr of Griswold by pin in the second round. In Falivene’s second match, he defeated Kyle Courtney of Granby by pin in the first round. In his next match, Falivene lost to Matt Oliwa of Derby by pin in the first round.

Gymnastics

Valley Regional had a meet against Haddam-Killingworth/Hale-Ray/Morgan and Mercy at Flip-Flop Gymnastics on Feb. 2. Valley posted a score of 91.0 and took a loss to both the lost Cougars (111.95) and Mercy (131.70).
