Huskies’ Girls’ Hoops Headed Back to States; Girls’ Track Places Second in Shoreline League Meet

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team played three games last week and won two of them to put its record at 8-6 and qualify for the Class M State Tournament.

On Jan. 23, the Huskies squared off against Coginchaug on the road and lost 61-45. Morgan fell behind 21-14 in the first half, and the Blue Devils led the rest of the way to secure the victory. Brianna Navarra scored 15 points for Morgan, and she also recorded four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Leah McComiskey led the Huskies in rebounds with eight to go with her 11 points. Freshman Caitlyn Donadio swiped six steals, had four assists, and scored nine points for the Huskies.

On Jan. 25, Morgan hosted Westbrook and prevailed by a score of 54-49. The game was back and forth most of the way, but Morgan held a narrow one-point lead after three. The Huskies then outscored the Knights 20-16 in the fourth and came away with the 54-49 victory. McComiskey was Morgan’s top scorer with 16 points to go with her five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Donadio hauled in 10 boards, while also scoring 13 points, getting two steals, and dishing six assists. Becca Shamp had eight points with nine rebounds for Morgan. Navarra scored 13 points to go with five rebounds and two steals.

Then on Jan. 27, the Huskies were at home to face Portland and won 53-29 to make states. Morgan went up 17-4 in the first quarter, and the Highlanders never came close to threatening for the remainder of the game. Donadio had the most points with 14, Becca Shamp was close behind with 12, and McComiskey had 10 points. Shamp, McComiskey and Navarra each had six rebounds, while Navarra grabbed five steals. Kylie Clifton scored eight points and had three steals for Head Coach Cailtin Woods’s squad in the victory.

Boys’ Basketball

Morgan dropped a pair of contests last week and now has a record of 3-9 on the season.

On Jan. 23, the Huskies hosted Coginchaug and lost 53-48. Morgan held a 26-22 at halftime, and the Blue Devils closed to just one point at 38-37 after three. In the fourth, Coginchaug outscored the Huskies 16-10 and went on to the get 53-48 win. Sophomore Miles Vogl led Morgan in scoring with 18 points, in addition to his two assists and two steals. Freshman Robbie Zirlis had six points and six rebounds, and senior Tyler Newfield notched seven points and three boards.

On Jan. 26, Morgan was at Westbrook and lost a close game by the final of 74-71 in overtime. Westbrook led the Huskies 37-30 after the first half, but Morgan never fell too far behind. After closing the gap to 49-45 in the third, the Huskies outscored the Knights 19-15 in the fourth quarter and forced the overtime period on a last-second 3-pointer from Patrick Markovics. In overtime, Westbrook outscored Morgan 10-7 to win the game by three. Vogl stuffed the stat sheet with 23 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals for the Huskies. Freshman Zach Johnson scored 12 points, and Chris Nuzzo had nine. AJ Fritz provided six assists, four boards, and a steal, while Markovics scored seven points to go with three steals and three rebounds.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Huskies took second place overall with a score of 83 points at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 26.

Taking home gold in their respective events for Morgan were Kate Daley in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:57.58 and Maura Kelly in the 600 at 1:52.73.

Morgan also saw success from its relay squads, including the 4x200 team of Alyssa LeMay, Courtney Viglione, Mikayla Mancini, and Taylor Wyatt that came in second place with a time of 1:54.84. In the 1,600 sprint medley relay, LeMay, Wyatt, Viglione, and Allison Gardner finished second at 4:36.05. The 4x800 quartet of Daley, Kelly, Gardner, and Isabella Ranaudo took third place with the time of 10:51.41.

Wyatt also placed third in the 55-meter dash at 8.05 seconds, and Mancini came in third in the high jump at 4 feet-6 inches for Morgan.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Morgan placed fourth with 50 points scored at the Shoreline Conference League Meet.

The Huskies received a first-place finish from the 4x400-meter relay team of Anes Gadun, Chayse Lofgren, Calvin Jackson, and Thomas Southwood, which timed in at 3:48.93. In addition, the 4x800 relay team of Lofgren, Justin Mucha, Southwood, and Zach Tuccitto came in first with a time of 9:10.13. The 4x200 squad of Juan Avila, Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Bryce Thomas, and Jackson came in second place at 1:41.76, while the grouping of Avila, Southwood, Jackson, and Lofgren earned second place in the 1,600 sprint medley relay by finishing in 4:02.98.

Anthony Coretti came in third place in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.64 seconds for Morgan.

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Hale-Ray/Morgan gymnastics team had a meet against Hand, Mercy, and Valley Regional at the Polson Gym at Daniel Hand High School on Jan. 25. The Cougars scored 122.2 points to defeat Valley Regional (90.85), while taking losses against Hand (132.75) and Mercy (132.2).

The team’s performers at the meet included Morgan senior Haley Smith, who scored 8.7 on vault, 8.2 on bars, 7.2 on beam, 8.3 on floor, and 32.4 all-around at the meet.
